Chapter 31 Prince Phillip’s beginnings and a vision come true! They were still catching up on sleep and eventually arose at midday, a gentle day was required so they purchased a book on the island and some new socks (The old ones had died and gone to hell), and headed for the harbour area once more. This time they walked right around the bay, though a little overcast, the sea and its islands took on a very serene look but provided a very tranquil walk. Little birds entertained them as they took coffee by the bay before continuing their walk and coming quite unintentionally at the gates of Mon Repos. A wooded peninsula which happened to be the place of birth of Prince Phillip, where he came into the world on a kitchen table. A jogger ... read more

Chapter 30 Corfu - Time to chill with not a pizza in sight Corfu They finally arrived in Corfu at 7.00am (an hour late) and were awoken just after 6.00am with a gentle knock and a timid voice pronouncing just one word “Corfu”. Maya was absolutely shattered and looked worse for wear when she joined Martin up at the breakfast bar. Cheryl had been telling Martin a little about her life on the island, pretty much selling the island to him yet warning him that out of season, Corfu is very much in a state of hibernation. They walked up onto the deck as Corfu welcomed our two with open arms as they pulled into the harbour surrounded by hills and mountains. Corfu is the largest and principal island of the Ionian island group which consists ... read more

Chapter 29 Ciao Italia - a sleepless Yasas to Corfu At Bari, they caught the bus to the port, having received very friendly advice from a tourist agent. At the port they were told there was a ferry to Corfu at 19.00 that day and they could board around 17.30. They bought their tickets which included a 2 berth cabin with ensuite toilet and shower. They were able to leave their rucksacks at the other terminal and began contemplating how they were going to pass away the next 8 hours. Feeling totally shattered already after the train journey, having to waste another 8 hours was going to be a challenge. Martin had the idea of going to a cinema, but after searching and finding three of them, all closed, they gave up on that idea. Bari ... read more

I went here, to the Island of Odysseus, to walk to some mythic sites, hiking along the roads to the beach (pictured) where Odysseus supposedly landed at the end of his journey, but though it was pretty (again, the photo, but that is a misleading angle), it was full of lounge chairs and a bar that unsurprisingly exploited the said footnote. The 15 hour ferry left Greece from Patras, picked me up in Ithaka, and went to Ancona, Italy, where I took a train to Rome. The seas were rougher than normal and I was deathly ill, probably from the ice cream I had the night before, and then having to sprint around the mouth of the harbor to catch the boat in the late morning, so I splurged, switching from a space on the deck ... read more

This island is fabulous, though I'm sure it's changed quite a lot and has become more crowded. I'd stay somewhere far away from the main tourist beaches. I was there while they were filming the movie Captain Corelli's Mandolin, and I didn't run into Nicholas Cage or Penelope Cruz, but I did sit next to John Hurt, which helped me meet two British girls who I inadvertantly helped avoid the advances of Dutch sailors, so they invited me to stay at their villa, where I probably outstayed my welcome because it was such a wonderful place.... read more

Oct 3, 1993 *City official name :Corfu *Founded date : *Location :Kerkyra Prefecture *Elavation :? ft (? m) *Area :Approximately ? square miles (? km²). *Facts :Corfu (Greek: Κέρκυρα - Kérkyra) is a city in north-western Greece. It is the capital and main town of the island and prefecture of Corfu. According to the local tradition Corcyra (Κόρκυρα) was the Homeric island of Scheria (Σχερία), and its earliest inhabitants the Phaeacians (Φαίακες). At a date no doubt previous to the foundation of Syracuse it was peopled by settlers from Corinth, but it appears to have previously received a stream of emigrants from Eretria. The splendid commercial position of Corcyra on the highway between Greece and the West favoured its rapid growth and, influe... read more

The port was a lot further than I had remembered it in the taxi. Not only that, but all the signs were in the cryptic Greek giberish and I was never entirely sure whether I was going in the right direction. It wasn't long, however, until some Greek blokes on mopeds took pity on me and gave me a lift. My backpack made it very unsteady, but any worry about that was more than made up for by gratitude for the lift. Not that it mattered any more, but I was on the right road. I should have had more faith in my natural sense of direction, although it has let me down frequently and it was probably more luck than judgement. The port was lined with sleeping back-packers, so I find a space and joined ... read more

The boat was a much smother ride than the trains, it was cooler and there was a lot more room. Consequently, I had the best night's sleep that I'd had in ages. I woke up briefly at exactly the right moment to see the sun rising, and then the next thing I remembered was the announcement that we were arriving at Corfu. The boat had showers, so by the time we got to shore, I was quite refreshed. The boat was met by loads of people flogging their accommodation, which was nice considering that up to now, we'd had to hunt high and low for somewhere. Monica, one of the Finish girls, had been raving about Pelekas, a particular village that she had been to, but there was no accommodation from there on offer. Against our ... read more

I am not a traveller. Really, I'm not. One day I hope to see so much more of the world but for now I have my memories. I thought I should write them down. Not for you out there.....for me. So I thought where should I start and since I remember with great fondness the village of Paleokastritsa in Corfu then the decision was easy. It was 1987 when I went to Corfu together with my wife to be, Jo, her daughter Joanne and Joanne's friend, Kerry. I seem to recall landing in the dark on a narrow strip of land that fed out into the sea and which was called a runway but could have been a thrill ride in its own right. We were actually staying in a would-be resort on the south end ... read more
