Again, it was the generosity of the Elliott's that had us at Manchester Airport well in time for our flight to Frankfurt. Chatted the whole journey with two English sisters so before we knew it we were landing. Waded our way through the mobs, found the train into Frankfurt and connected with the main line to head us in the right direction of Wurzburg and our accommodation at the Maritim Hotel. We struck it rich again.... read more

I have developed a theory about life, at least about that which Phil and I share. It's that the different strands of our lives separate and return over time. So it was with great delight that we were able to see Niko and Katia again. Niko was our first exchange student, who came to us through Sky's high school at the time, the International School in Sydney. He came from Germany when he was 16 years old, 28 years ago, just before Lucien was born. His sister Katia stayed with us 4 years later. In 1996, we think it was, Phil was able to visit their family in Germany when he went for a scientific conference for his work. The whole family was most welcoming to him and the visit was a highlight of his trip. ... read more

Guten Tag! Once again, I am blogging my way through a holiday, this time in France but I am starting with a few days in Germany. I wanted to title this blog with a pun on the name Würzburg, but the best I could come up with was “From Bad to Würzburg” but there hasn’t been any bad yet! Getting up at 2:30am for my flight wasn’t great though, but on the plus side there were very few people at the airport so it was quick to get through check-in and immigration. The flight to Dubai was not too packed so there was a bit of room to stretch out and get some sleep. The flight from Dubai to Frankfurt was more packed, and quite warm for some reason but I managed to alternate between ... read more

It is with a heavy heart that I write today's blog after the situation at the Berlin Christmas Martket. So sad for the people and families affected by the attack. The Christmas Markets in Germany are such a beautiful tradition and for this to happen to people who are out enjoying the markets and getting into the festive season is beyond comprehension. it is a senseless waste of life and so selfish of the people perpetrated the attack! 21st December 2016: So... a couple of days ago we visited the beautiful countryside city of Rothenberg. We arrived there by about 10.00am and it was absolutely freezing. I had left my scarf back at the ship so had to go any buy another (what a shame)!!! The countryside on the drive out to Rothenburg Along the Romatic ... read more

We went to Wurzburg today where we spent time at the Residenz which was the grand palace for the Prince-Bishop Balthasar Neumann. It was kind of a "I'll scratch your back if you scratch my back" way of being elevated to that level. The interior was extremely ornate with Baroque and Rococo embellishments, paintings, statues, décor and design. Now mind you, this palace was for one man since he was a bishop and was not to be married (although rumor has it there may have been children). Pictures were not allowed of the inside, but take my word, it was dazzling! More than 80% of the city was destroyed in WWII bombings. The town repaired the buildings to their original state and there was also significant damage to the Residenz. The taxpayers have paid for the ... read more

Just when you think things can't get any nicer, we dock in Wurzburg, Germany. It was 85% destroyed in WWII, so we expected a lot of modern buildings. We're we ever wrong! First of all, the city has been rebuilt and updated but done in a way that is more consistent with it's heritage. The streets in the City Centre are narrow and many are for pedestrians only. This particular Saturday is part of a German holiday weekend, and the weather was perfect, so the crowds were very large. Like most of Europe, there are lots of small outdoor cafes/bars (bruhausbars), many hidden down small pedestrian alleys. Today, all were filled with very happy people of all ages. Bowen and I had lunch in one and thoroughly enjoyed our traditional German food: bratwurst, sauerbraten, potato dumplings ... read more

How time flies! Him is now recovered and Her caught it and is just over the worst of it. Herc seems able to avoid all these ailments- obviously made of hardier stuff than them! We had Sunday morning cruising through Bavaria and sampled Frushoppen, which is second breakfast of beer and sausages around 10.00am. The waistlines are growing inches daily. The feet can't hold up to the amount of walking required to walk it all off. The Cruise Director is offering groups for people who need gentle walking and it means that we have become the core of a small group of people who admit to being a bit past it. It gives us a much more personalised tour and an opportunity to build relationships with the guides. They are a treat , very knowledgeable and ... read more

Day 3 Sunday morning – Germany calling, Germany Calling We overlayed this morning as they say in Derbyshire waking at 8. We had a four hour drive today but felt the need to just hang about until 9 to take our key back to receptie. A few dutch words learned today – receptie - very similar to reception – Te Koop – for sale. Won’t get me far but it is a start. I exchanged our key for 17 euros 20 after the water usage was calculated and we said goodbye to our rabbits and the crow which spent half an hour pulling apart and eating a mouse just outside our motorhome. My head was full of the thoughts of Gerard Manley Hopkins whose poem talked of Nature red in claw and tooth . We drove ... read more

The flight to Frankfurt, surprise, surprise was uneventful and we collected our rental car no problem at all, well almost no problem, they did not have any maps and did not even sell any maps, no phone shop at our terminal so a minor hold up. We discovered that terminal 2 was where all the good shops were so we caught the shuttle there and within 30 mins we were sussed. Armed with maps, a much needed coffee and a new sim card for Pam’s phone we headed back to the car and on our way. My nerves were a little wound up as I remember how tricky driving is on the other side of the road so with some trepidation we set off trusting the GPS to deliver us to the right place. Piece of ... read more
