After toasted sandwiches (yes with the $10 toaster) and a quick run around in dewy grass with Em, we began our drive to Wurzburg. As we wanted to get there in a timely manner, we chose the motorway and smashed through half a tank of diesel at about 140km/h most of the way. That’s a lot of fuel for a little four-pot! Anyway, having arrived about lunchtime, we made sure we knew where the hotel was then headed for the Wurzburg Residenz. The Residenz is a bit like the Palace of Versaille near Paris but without the crowds. Not as lavish with the gold leaf on the outside, but inside it was simply stunning! This really is a must-see for anyone coming to Germany. It was built in the 17th century as a (you guessed it) ... read more

Wurzburg is in the region of Franconia in Northern Bavaria. The Main river runs through it and the hills around the city are covered with vineyards. This region is one of the most important of the wine growing districts in Germany. Famous for its mineralic dry white wines especially from the Silvaner grape. We happened upon big white tents set up around the central Markt area in and around the huge Marienkapelle church in the old town. These tents were all selling wine of the Franconia region and the name of the festival is called Wein Parade. We each had a glass of white. I was not impressed by it but the alcoholic content was high because I giggled my way along the Main River and across the Old Main Bridge which is lined with statues ... read more

Geo: 49.7878, 9.93611 A long drive from Innsbruck to Wurzburg yesterday, delayed by an hour and a half by a bad truck and bus accident on the autobahn. Arrived at Wurzburg late in the day. The city of Wurzburg is mentioned in a donation by Hedan II to Bishop Willibrord, dated 1 May 704. On 16 March 1945, about 90% of the city was destroyed in 17 minutes by 225 British Lancaster bombers during a World War II air raid. All of the city's churches, cathedrals, and other monuments were either heavily damaged or destroyed during the air raid. We caught the bus into the old city of Wurzburg this morning, and walked around the old city, including the local produce markets. We then headed for Fortress Marienberg which is on the highest point overlooking the ... read more

The weather forecast on 20 June wasn’t very promising. We saw the thick clouds gathering around the Messe Tower when we walked to Hotel Atrium in the morning. After the breakfast, we walked to the central station to take ICE train for Würzburg. After leaving Frankfurt, the ICE train was driving through the lush countryside calling at Aschaffenburg. The view from the window was getting brighter as the train was approaching the destination. The sun was shining and it was quite warm in Würzburg. I took off my waterproof coat. We couldn’t find the tourist information centre around the station. We were going to buy the Bayren Pass which would allow us to ride public transports and get deductions on museums. However, I could find the street along the tram leading to the town centre from ... read more

Wurzburg On the way to Wurzburg the culinary crew had some fun and showed their artistic skills. We arrived at Wurzburg in time for an 8:30 departure for Rothenburg or a tour of the Residence. We chose the tour of the Prince Bishop's Residence. The people there say that they are Franconians not Bavarians because they were Francs (from the Germanic tribe of Francs) until Bavaria sided with Napoleon. The Celts had a fortification here in 1,000 BC. The word ending "burg" means that it was a fortress and "berg" means it was a hill or mountain. In medieval times a fortress was built on a hill, now across the river from the town centre. It grew into a large fortress with a Residence for the Prince Bishop. In the 18th century the Prince Bishop decided ... read more

Geo: 49.7813, 9.95361I had another crappy sleep, yet woke up WAY too early. This seems to have been the pattern for the entire trip, so far. In fact, it's the pattern for ALL my trips ... Today is my last full day of the trip - sigh ... it feels like I just left home only a few weeks ago, but now the seconds are ticking away at an alarming rate.I grabbed breakfast with the brothers, and there were more inappropriate comments and jokes made - fun, fun, fun! They're actually doing a super-low budget biking trip through Germany, but I really don't know how they're managing. They were alternating between camping and hosteling, but all their camping gear got stolen a few days ago. This heat must also be brutal - they told me that ... read more

The crew reunites in Nuremburg on Thursday June 22. Alek, Jason, Steve, Aaron, and Rich caught a flight the night before from the beaches of Northern Holland and spent the night partying in Nuremburg. Tristan, Joe, and myself arrive from Paris, take a short train to town from the airport, and run into the crew enjoying a few brews outside of their hotel. We store our bags in their room and join them for a beer ourselves. Oddly enough Steve says, "Isn't that crazy, that guy totally looks like..wholly cow, it is him". Steve bumped into a high school friend of his from Sacramento in downtown Nuremburg, what are the odds?? The 8 of us finish our beers, and jump on a train to the stadium, but not before Jason is interviewed by somebody filming for ... read more
