There were a number of choices today but we went for a visit to a local castle called Weikersheim Palace. A castle was built on this site in the 1200s but a local Count rebuilt it in Renaissance style in the late 1500s. It was rebuilt again in the 1700s by Count's grandson in a Baroque style. Unfortunately for the title, the line then died out and the palace was unoccupied for 250 years. What was bad for the family turned out to be good for the palace as its furnishings, art and decor were preserved intact and eventually restored in the 1970s by a distant relative of the original owners. This was a real treat as beds, tables, desks, chairs, wall hangings and paintings were all original equipment. The garden (channeling French gardens of the ... read more

Today was the day of hiking. I’m not sure what we were thinking when we booked a hiking tour in the morning and a walking tour in the afternoon, but the result was we were able to see a lot of Wurzburg and get in a lot of steps! Wurzburg is a city of about 125,000 people located in Germany’s Bavaria region. It is mostly known for its Baroque architecture and Franconian wine. 90 percent of the city was destroyed by the British with a single firebomb attack on March 16,1945. There was no military presence or industrial base in Wurzburg at the time, so the British destroyed the city as only an act of revenge, or to demoralize the Germans. Wurzburg had intentionally stayed away from industrialization precisely because it did not want to become ... read more

This morning we slept in a little late, waking up finally at about 9am. The free breakfast stopped being served at 9:30, so we quickly got dressed and went down to the cafeteria on the ground floor. Breakfast consisted of various types of meats and cheeses, breads, cereal, yogurt, fruit, and coffee/tea. While we ate, I uploaded yesterday's blog and photos. Our first priority today was to climb up the the fortress above the hostel called Festung Marienberg. It was quite a long climb, but well worth it. The fortress consists of several courtyards and surrounding buildings, including two or three museums, a conference center, a chapel, a restaurant, a cafe/ice cream/souvenir store, and a nice small garden behind it all. The museums were mostly artwork, so we passed on them. The chapel was being renovated, ... read more

Well, first of all, let me say we did end up getting the flight on Monday to Ramstein. They had 44 seats and didn't quite fill them up. The check-in process started a bit later than 4:20pm, and dragged on a lot, mostly due to the fact they although others seemed available, only one Air Force agent was calling on and checking in each passenger. Some where past the midway point, they did add a second agent. Manoli and I were called up about half way through the process, due to the number of active duty and others in higher categories than us. After checking in our two pieces of luggage (80 pounds between the two), we waited for the call to pass through security, then a few minutes after that, we boarded the old Bluebird ... read more

This day was dominated by the marriage of Thomas and Marie, the reason we were in Wurzburg. The formal commitments began in the Wenzelsaal Room of the Wurzburg Rathaus in central Wurzburg. After champagne and canapes all guests made their way to the Nikolaushof Wurzburg, perched high above the city of Wurzburg, with awesome views across the valley and over the river and city itself. A truly magnificent setting for such a celebratory occasion. Here it was food, drink, laughter, conversation, fun and welcoming from the German to guests/family to Jane and I that we were at ease immediately. A truly brilliant day. We were honoured to have been invited to share such a happy occasion.... read more

Didn't step out until 3pm and then to be greeted by the many church bells ringing. Either was us they were greeting or it happened to signal 3pm. Sunshine and people joyfully interacting with life was all around us. We made our way to the fountain square where a market was in progress, continuing on past until we were meandering our way through laneways hemmed in by beautifully and ornately painted walls and fascades and cobbled paths and roads until we reac...hed our destination of UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site Residence Palace, built from 1720-1744. We took our time walking and gawking at the beautifully manicured gardens and clean paths and families strolling together enjoying what we were enjoying. I'm in love ... with ... Wurzburg. We went for a stroll to find somewhere cosy to eat and not too far from our hotel. Well, we found the cosy place to eat, "Il Felice", an Italian restaurant. The food was 'molto bellissimo'. If Jane wasn't present I would have had my meal all over again. No, I'm saying what I had. Then, we strolled ... and ... I ... fell ... in ... love ... with this beautiful Bavarian town on the Main River. I just clicked pic after pic, without thinking really, as I was just marvelling at buildings and views this stroll was throwing up, only 5 minutes from our magnificently located hotel. And, we have 4 more nights to go!... read more
