Lovely peaceful night last night, except that the birds have an unusual idea of "dawn" for their chorus! Still, better than being woken by French workmen, which is what usually happens on Aires. So another very pleasant drive today, albeit a bit longer at just over 4hrs travel. Arrived at our planned Aire, at Hérouvillette, to find it full (mostly of Brits wanting to see the D-Day stuff. Pity, as it was the nearest to the place for Wednesday's Dakota parachute drop, which is the main thing we want to see. Still, found ourselves a spot on the tiny Aire here at Bréville, Just two other vans here, one Brit and one Dane (who speaks English, as they all do). While chilling out and panning the cooking, we heard a generator start up (some motorhomers can't ... read more

Day 17 This part will be expanded and the pictures captioned and text added when I can gather all the information about the sites. We saw so many things yesterday, that it all runs together. I will pull it together and edit the blog when done, but wanted to get this posted so anyone checking on it doesn't wonder what happened. I don't want to get it wrong, and do a disservice to the brave souls from the Allied Forces that fought to make Europe Free. We saw Colleville Bluff, the American Cemetery, Omaha and Utah Beaches, the Memorial at Vienville, Point-du-Hoc, Sainte-Mere-Eglises, Iron Mike Statue, Pont-de-La Fiere, the Dick Winters Monument, Sainte-Marie-du-mort and the Bayeux Tapestry.... read more

Day 16 Today we depart London, after a wonderful stay. The city is dlightful. We stayed in the theater district I think, and there was a choice of every type of eatery you could possibly desire. Good Bye London. Our next stop is France, Paris, then drive to Carentan to visit the Beaches of Normandy, and the memorials associated with that effort of keeping Europe Free. We took a 2 hour train ride from London to Paris, under the channel. It is called the Chunnel. The Channel Tunnel, with three tunnels for traffic going both ways. If they need to repair one, the move traffic to the spare one while work is going on. Sleek trains, going up to 185 miles per hour (not sure the kilometer/hour google it if you need to know) get you ... read more

Bon jour from Cherbourg France. This is actually our 3rdport in France during the whole vacation, but last night we received a message that we had to turn in our passports for Immigration to see before we would be allowed off the ship in Cherbourg. But it was easier to comply than to argue, so David ran them down to Passenger Services late last night. This morning we got up at 6:30 because we needed to be in the Wheelhouse Bar by 8:00. We got dressed and went to the breakfast buffet in the Horizon Court. Apparently there were more people in the late night nightclubs than the early morning buffet, so we had an easy time of finding a table and had a quiet breakfast. We discovered our dinner waiter (Rolly) was in charge of ... read more

Good thing we set our alarm last night. After almost nine hours of sleep, it rudely woke us in time for a wonderful breakfast. We set out for our first destination, Ste mere Eglise. This town was the first town liberated by the US forces on D day. The 82nd Aiborne parachuted and glided in. Located in town is a wonderful museum packed full of D Day artifacts and videos that will bring a tear to your eye. It does a great job of paying tribute to the brave soldiers and airmen that participated in this assault. From there, our next stop was Utah Beach. This location has special meaning, as Ray's uncle Arthur, a Navy Seabee, was injured on that beach during the invasion. While taking a photo at one of the memorials, a French ... read more

Well, what can I say. Today was a very long exhausting day. Left Boston at 7:10 pm, arriving at Charles de Gaulle airport at 7:20am, local time. The flight itself was very uneventful, arriving early, so we thought "Great". Not so fast, as we waited in line for 1 1/2 hours to get through immigration, then on to the car rental agency, which took another hour. So we didn't get on the road until 10:00am. Thankfully, our car is equipped with GPS, so we easily maneuvered through busy traffic, and arrived at our first stop, Giverny, to visit Monet's home and gardens. It was not disappointing, as the flowers were spectacular, and his home interesting, and filled with reproductions of his works. After a very delicious lunch of filled crepes, we headed off to Bayeux, where ... read more

Sunday morning and we’re up early. We were given our marching orders last night, Jelly toast for breakfast and on the road to Mont St Michelle. Our first stop is in Rennes. Hmmm, can’t say much about this city so I won’t. Very industrial, how’s that?. The next stop is Concale, I suggested St Malo, Kirsten and I were there years ago on our first Transatlantic cruise. However, Kirsten wanted a different village and found out it was market day today. Well, it turned out it was like Daytona Beach during bike week. Yep, butt to butt. Motorcycles everywhere I was felt up and down and didn’t even get kissed. More leather and skin than I ever want to see. After not being able to even get a table for a beer, we’re back in the ... read more

We decide that today (Monday) is the day we'll head to the D-day beaches. We're going to follow the advice given by good 'ol Rick Steves and work our way East to West beginning in Arrowmanches. We get an early start. We have no idea how many tourists are in the area and I would like to get a few places in if it gets crowded. I wish we could be alone. I have a feeling that the emotions might be a bit overwhelming. We arrive in Arrowmanches and there are only a couple of cars in the lot closest to the Landing Museum and the Tourist Information Center. We head into the TI first to get any tips they might might be able to offer and set out on a 10 minute walk to the ... read more
