We woke up bright and early. It is Sunday. We are leaving Paris today and heading to Normandy! We finish the last of our packing and head down to breakfast at 7am. Surprisingly, four of our tour mates are already in the breakfast room. As we eat, another two join us to wish us well. The people are headed back to the States, the gentleman is staying in Paris til Tuesday, the sisters are headed to the D-Day beaches by train and our leaders are in Paris for a few days before heading to Italy. Steve walks us to the train station a couple blocks away and makes sure we get on the correct train. It is an express train to the airport where we will pick up our rental car. This train makes fewer stops ... read more

First stop is to sort out our tickets for the train to Caen. Much quicker and easier than we thought after fighting the internet earlier. Then off to visit the Catacombs. This time we had prepaid, fast track tickets which only involved a 30 minute wait rather than 4 hours. The Catacombs are the underground ossuary of Paris and has the remains of more than 6,000,000 people artfully arranged in layers of fibulars and skulls. This was founded in 1774 after a series of cave-ins and remains from cemeteries were transferred between 1786 and 1788. More were transferred later. This has been a tourist attraction since 1874. From here, we headed off to see Notre Dame. This is a beautiful gothic cathedral. Again a queue to get in but it moved quickly. During the French Revolution ... read more

Caen is very different from Paris. Less hustle and bustle, everyone is really nice. First stop this morning was the laundrette. Easy, cheap and fast. While we waited had a coffee at the coffee shop next door. Asked for a latte and cappuccino- got one black coffee and one topped with sweetened whipped cream. Caen is a port city in the Normandy region. The Chateau de Caen is across the road from the laundrette and was built by William the Conqeror around 1060 prior to his invasion of England. He also built 2 great abbeys (men's abbey and women's abbey) which gave birth to the city of Caen and was the heart of the "Norman Empire" The chateau was destroyed in the French Revolution and then by the bombing in WWII. The remains of William's original ... read more

Tag 121 – 9.

Europe » France » Lower Normandy » Honfleur October 14th 2016

Bob spent quite a lot of time planning this next jump because of the complexity involved: 1) we wanted if possible to make it in one jump from Cherbourg to Honfleur which was a total of 77 nautical miles 2) we wanted nice weather for the passage with wind in the “right” direction 3) we needed to plan it out to take advantage of the currents 4) we also read that we needed to be at buoy #2 near the entrance to the Seine at two hours before high tide in order to ride the tide into the Seine and finally 5) we wanted to get to the lock going into Honfleur between 1 ½ hours before and after high tide so we would not have to lock through as both doors would be open. We ... read more

Europe » France » Lower Normandy » Cherbourg September 12th 2016

As we now have reservations for 6 months in Paris from Oct 1 – March 31 we needed to get moving so we hopefully can get there by the 1st of October. In some ways it seems like we have plenty of time as we decided to leave Weymouth on September 6th, but we always try to factor in the possibility that the weather may not be “right” for moving as well as we know we have to prepare to take the mast down in Honfleur so we can travel up the Seine to Paris. We also want to have some time to visit a few of the towns on our way to Paris. The battery was put in on Monday and the weather was right for us to leave to cross the English Channel to ... read more

Europe » France » Lower Normandy » Bayeux July 16th 2016

Time for a serious piece of the last century history. I name the D-Day, the Battle of Normandy....and the serious start of the end on Hitler and all the fascism that was covering part of the world. We are now based in Bayeux for two nights. We are staying in a Novotel that was built before I was even born....but still way after the D-Day! We first spent some time exploring the city of Bayeux. The Cathedral was pretty amazing and has seen some serious moments in the history of France. We didn't visit the tapestry. I have to admit, we didn't bother forking the expensive entry fee. None of us is deeply into tapestry. Smile! We still had a good look at it touring the souvenir shop of the Museum. Bayeux city center was pretty ... read more

Europe » France » Lower Normandy » Mont Saint-Michel July 14th 2016

Brittany is not well known for sunny days....but today, we are lucky enough to get one of those in the bag! The plan was simple...we were going to enjoy the stunning Mont Saint-Michel without the crowds. To do this, we wake up early and breakfast is taken during the short ride from Saint Malo. Time for us to try the famous kouign amann, a Britanny cake full of sugar. Yammie, but not something you want to experience every day! We arrived at the huge car park of Mont Saint-Michel by 8.30am, and the place is still empty. For the last few years, cars do not get anymore to the foot of the Mont. Rather, they have built a huge car park, and are providing bus transfers to the Mont. The car park fee is not cheap, ... read more

Europe » France » Lower Normandy » Cherbourg June 27th 2016

With June 30th as our deadline for getting to the Channel Islands after a few days in Dieppe, the weather prediction looked like it would be good for our trip to Cherbourg, our original destination when we left Rotterdam. When sailing in this area you need to check the tide charts to determine when to leave to hopefully get the advantage of the tides and currents. With this in mind you also try to plan your travels so that you make landfall during daylight hours if at all possible. We knew Cherbourg as we had been there before and it would be possible to have a nighttime arrival, but we prefer daytime landings! Working it all out it looked like we needed to leave Dieppe about 5:30PM on June 22nd but would have some flexibility of ... read more

Drive down through Normandy avoiding motorways, as usual (as they send me to sleep) and keeping to the quieter roads which take us through pretty little villages. All very rural and pretty wet. There's been a lot of rain in this area, and indeed throughout France for several days now. We are consoled by the fact that it's raining at home too. The prime concern was to get over the Seine without going anywhere near Rouen as that is somewhere we try very hard to avoid having twice in the past encountered problems there. Bob instead navigated a route over Pont Bretonne and down through Port Audenay. Then we were in the area of lovely Normandy timbered houses. If this area was a bit warmer it would be lovely for a full visit but we are ... read more
