The trip continues and we move ever onward towards Christmas. The weather apart from the rain and wind of last night is being particularly kind to us . So where in the world is Gabby the motorhome? She left her quiet overnight spot and we drove the quiet empty roads to a massive parking area at the Battle of Normandy museum at Caen. We had a plan. Free to park, plenty of space , easy walking to the museum and then a bus ride into Caen. An overnight stop if we wanted it. All for free. We had made the plan to visit the museum as this year is the 75th anniversary of the D Day landings. Caen also had two magnificent abbeys - one built by William I for men and the other by his ... read more

Europe » France » Lower Normandy » Bayeux December 31st 2019

Bayeux - memories of driving in to the city in a car. Memories of seeing the tapestry . Memories of an omlette in a cafe for lunch . It was a Sunday . Odd how you remember exactly the day you were somewhere even years after. . This time we are here about 18 years later in Gabby the motorhome . Who ever would have thought we would be back ? Bayeux after Caen was a delight . Less traffic , less madness, no bus lanes and an excellent overnight possibility in the grounds of the Museum . Free parking in the day 5 euros overnight , Not bad at all. We could stop if we wanted to or move on . Depending on how the mood took us . We are at the Memorial to ... read more

Europe » France » Lower Normandy » Carentan December 31st 2019

It's Day 7 and we are having a quiet day. The weather is still reasonable for the time of the year. It is hard to believe that it is December. If you ignore the flooded fields and the muddy camping car aire it could almost be Spring. The Lithium battery is still holding up and we have not needed to hook up to electricity for the last seven days. How good does that feel. We drove the short distance from Bayeux to the small town of Carentan. We chose here because we needed water and to do a dump. Not an attractive word but something that needs to be done. The aire we chose was a camping car one. We can check on line to see how many spaces there are and how many are available ... read more

Europe » France » Lower Normandy » Arromanches-les-Bains December 31st 2019

After leaving the relative peace and quietness of downtown Carentan Gabby the motorhome found herself parked up on a very windy headland overlooking the rather choppy sea. Rusted guns still point to the south coast of England. Why are we here? Well this coastal battery at Longues sur Mer is one of the key Normandy D Day battlefield sites. That is reason enough . It is the midst of the landing beaches between Omaha and Gold Beach with views towards Arromanches and the Mulberry Harbours . It is an open site , free to visit and wonder round and to our surprise still has its guns . It was still a busy place even out of season. A place for walkers and enthusiasts alike. There is a tourist information office here but at this time of ... read more

Europe » France » Lower Normandy » Falaise December 30th 2019

We returned to Gabby from our abortive trip to the abbey and packed up ready to move on to the next stop on our trip . We stopped for a coffee and a biscuit to cheer us up. Some you win . Some you lose. It was always going to be hit and miss at Christmas, Would we be in the right place at the right time for opening hours . Some would be open right up to Christmas Eve . Others closed until the break between Christmas and New Year . We have learned by now not to trust anything and take what comes. It is better than being at home. Falaise was our next destination . . Falaise the birthplace of William known as the Bastard . Hopefully things will be better and we ... read more

Europe » France » Lower Normandy » Bayeux December 18th 2019

After leaving Prague, we arrived in Paris (Charles De Gaulle Airport) to pick up our rental car for our trip to Normandy and the WWII beaches! Unfortunately, the car was not ready which delayed our trip for over an hour and we drove to Bayeux in pouring rain as the sun set, making the grey day even bleaker. We arrived at Au Loup Historic Apartments in Bayeux late but we were able to gain access by connecting with the hotel staff during a frantic drive in the dark with pouring rain! The apartments were not a normal hotel as you get codes and basically stay in a fully equipped apartment in an old cottage courtyard in the French village. Lovely apartment style residence and 2 minutes walking distance from the 11th century church and downtown. Very ... read more

Bill and I agreed that we always thought of D-Day, 6th of June as being a defining and definite date (which it was, but)...but we learned at this stunning and well presented museum that it was only the beginning of the invasion that went on for another six months or so. We saw the maps and photos of the invasion of Normandy, a key episode in the liberation of Europe. Such casualties. We could only do this part in one afternoon. The tickets are good for 24 hours. The photos of the destruction. I won’t list them. (But, they made me think about poor Syria...we visited Damascus and Aleppo about 20 years ago, and now whenever we see what has happened there...I feel so sad...Is there any way that it will be able to recover?)

Europe » France » Lower Normandy » Le Mont-Saint-Michel September 16th 2019
