Arriving at Bidart on a hot sunny afternoon we walked to the beach. We then returned to site and made use of the water park - not so much a swimming pool but a giant Jacuzzi, the water temp. Was 30C ! Monday saw us relaxing and taking Barney to the beach for a paddle. Tuesday was spent in St Jean de Luz and once again lunched on Fruites de Mer - delicious. The town is very Basque. Wednesday we decided to investigate some of the countryside inland visiting Sare. The church was very interesting with three tiers of galleries. The Basque game of Pelote is played in the town square and a display of game equipment in the town hall. We ventured onto the Train de la Rhune - a mistake - Barney hated the ... read more

Europe » Spain » Cantabria » Comillas May 30th 2015

Last day in Spain. We took a short trip to the neighbouring town of Comillas. We wandered around the old town - another church but this time very plain but lovely flowers at the altar. The balconies on the houses and shops are colourful with geraniums. We came across signs for El Capricho de Gaudi also known as Villa Quijero, so we decided to follow the signs to visit the house. The villa was designed by Antonio Gaudi - considered to be his first work of importance and the start of the modernist period! What a gem! We were so pleased to have discovered it. Barney enjoyed his beach and paddle. The site pool was cool but good for a swim.... read more

Cloudy start so we decided to visit the local town of San Vicente de la Barquera. After wandering around the centre we made our way up to the 13c church of Santa Maria de Los Angeles. There was a funeral on so we had to wait until the service had finished before going in! The inside was amazing with huge wooden floor boards. A statue of an angel carrying an oar was perched on one of the inside walls. There is a connection with fishing and the sea as the "marine college" was the next building. After shopping were turned to site and enjoyed an afternoon in the sun.... read more

Said farewell again to Beppe, Leo and Doris! Headed further east across to San Vicente de la Barquera and Camping Playa de Oymbre. on arrival after setting up walked down to the beach - deserted and Barney headed directly to the waves! Very warm - breakfast in the sun before we drove into Picos de Europa - mind blowing roads, spectacular views. Some snow still on the higher peaks. Lunch at Potes before heading back to the site to meet up with our Dutch friends and for dinner in the restaurant. It is now five sites where we have met them.... read more

Some light rain overnight but blue skies in the morning. We took the small coastal roads calling in at several bays. Continually driving under the huge viaducts/flyovers of the motorway. We paddled at Cavavedo, mainly following the Camino de Santiago - quite a walk for the participants - a lot of road walking. We lunched at Luraca - spectacular fishing town - the Costa Verde is a very beautiful coastline.... read more

Europe » Spain » Asturias » Cudillero May 23rd 2015

On into northern Spain - the roads are very good, high altitude and lots of viaducts. Arriving at Cudillero - a fishing village that has a harbour that reminds you of Padstow! How they managed to build the houses on the steep hillside! The closest beach to the site is only 2 km away and has a rugged coastline, sand and surf. Monday (Imogen's birthday) took us up to the Cabos de Penas, a spectacular coastline. Our Dutch friends Leo, Beppe and Doris the dog arrived! So we went to the beach had a good walk on the beach followed by a glass or two of wine sitting in the sun at the beach cafe.... read more

Europe » Portugal » Northern May 21st 2015

Exploring this area - the site is high up in the hills, very narrow lanes to approach. We headed down to the coast, the river estuary is at Caminha where we walked around the estuary mouth - white sand, lots of sea holly and other flowers in the dunes. We then had a lovely drive down the coast to Moledo and lunch at Ancona. Beautiful white sand - drove back to base via the mountain route and we could see in the distance a large forest fire (Not near us!) Supper tonight at the bar with Dutch friends, tomorrow we travel back into Spain. We have eaten at the bar. Bing the owner and his wife cook authentic Portuguese food, we have had cockles and pork, lemon soup! and some other very tasty dishes.... read more

Europe » Portugal » Northern » Vila Nova de Cerveira May 19th 2015

Leaving O Tamanco we set off north - very windy, fortunately most of the motorway route was quiet except around Porto. Managed to find our way to Camping Convivio up a mountain road and only just getting the caravan in. We are near Vila Nova de Cerveira which is by the Rio Minho the border with Spain. The town is preparing for an Arts Fiesta and some of the buildings are decorated with large butterflies and ladybirds. There are some sculptures around the town as it is a centre for the arts. We also visited Valenca. The Fortaleza is full of small streets selling Portuguese wares. Some lovely views. The Hart (deer) is especially revered in the area but their numbers are now very few and it is rare to see one.... read more

We drove to Figueira da Foz along the busy motorway. Parked by the beach and wandered around a street flea market - no purchases made. Then visited the Museum do Sal in the salinas. Didn't do the full tour as was very hot and no dogs allowed. Back to O Tamanco, the flowers around the site are lovely. A good swim in the salt water pool. We dined in the Cantina - cabbage soup, fish, olives, steak and finished off with a lime and caramel sorbet. Good company with Leo and Beppe, lots of wine - they are leaving tomorrow. Sunday saw us visiting the Sunday market at Lourical, you can buy anything from a bed to a tractor and all food and clothes possible! Another very hot day so enjoyed a swim in the afternoon. ... read more
