You should arrive in Salzburg: A) after dark B) without a hotel reservation C) during a Mozart year D) with a car E) while battling a cold None of the above! Unfortunately for us, we did all of the above. We had hoped to stay for 2 nights (Thursday and Friday), but quickly learned that 2006 is the 250th anniversary of Mozart's birth and so there is no low season. This meant hotels were packed for weekend concerts and there were no rooms to be had on a Friday night. The Old Town area is pedestrian only, many of the streets are one way, and parking is a limited resource. The no-cars area is actually quite large, and extends to both sides of the river. I think we would have liked it quite a bit if ... read more

Salzburg We road with a van full of other people to get into Austria, then took a train to get to the city. Austria is a country that I've always wanted to visit, and the countryside couldn't have been more beautiful with the Alps towering in the distance. I just wanted to take photo after photo to capture it. Salzburg is a small city, very walkable and clean, and we enjoyed our two days of sight-seeing. Of course, since "The Sound of Music" was filmed here we recognized many bridges, buildings, and squares, and tested each other of our movie knowledge :) We opted not to the the "tour" because it was a bit pricey for our liking! It was just all so "pretty", I guess that's the best way to describe it! Some gorgeous churches, ... read more

We spent a night and a day in Salzburg on our way to Vienna from Interlaken. Arriving at the train station, I called and made a reservation at local zimmer that was in Rick Steve's book. The woman on the phone gave me directions, telling me which bus line to take, which stop to get off at, etc. Don't ask me how this happened, but we headed in the exact OPPOSITE direction, finding ourselves totally lost... like geese in a hail storm. After another phone call we finally got back on the track, found the zimmer and checked in, and took the bus to the old town. Salzburg was nice... yet I wouldn't want to live there... it certainly wasn't Paris or Rome, although the old town part was nice. Paraded back and forth until I ... read more

Well its time to pack the bags and get the caravan rolling again. Its "Auf wiedersehen" to Frau Brigitte and her Privat Zimmer in Salzburg. We didnt do the "Sound of Music" tour as we were spinning on hiltops at 3000 m yesterday and the hills were well and truely "alive"............also, we have seen enough Marias, von Trapps and lederhosen in the last few days to satisfy the most discerning S of M addict! In other words, we have run out of time..again! besides, we have been past all the places in the movie and seen the sights on the "tourist trail" as well as the best parts they dont frequent, which is the way we prefer to travel. We are at the train station just grabbing a last minute blog before we board for Munich. ... read more

Hi All Firstly thanks for all your comments, we've read and posted them if they appear in the box at the bottom of the journal. Great to hear from you, keep in touch. Well its taken almost 62 years but I've finally seen my first snow! What an incredible day.......2 hours on the train from Salzburg to the beautiful lakeside town of Zell am See then 30 minutes on the 660 bus to the base of the cable car. From there it was cable car to the first staion, open ski lift to the Alpincenter at 2450 metres then another cable car to the summit of Kitzsteinhorn (more than 3000 metres/ 10000ft+). Don't think it was your sort of ride Sally altho I think the Pearson family skiers would love it. I felt quite breathless snow ... read more

GrĂ¼sse aus Salzburg, We left Vienna by train at the respectable time of 10 am and got excellent comfortable seats in the 1st class compartment. This time we took some fresh sandwiches and drinks from the station kiosk and were set for the trip. Departed in nice sunny weather and arrived at Salzburg in drizzle and low cloud, although could still see craggy mountain tops poking out thru come mist. Lovely. We intended to just make it the one overnight here in order to jump off onto day trips or proceed further into the "unknown". We have no plans from here until Rome. We managed to secure a ( last one left at 3pm) little B&B, which turned out to be a private house. There are lots of these around and are good and cheap. This ... read more

Quick Notes: 1. Shout out to Caroline for leaving us fun comments and correcting our music knowledge. She get many European points 2. Austria gets an A from us - good food, lots of meat, great beer, very clean, nice people (even though the reputation is otherwise), fun castles, beautiful mountains, good public transportation....you get the idea. 3. Beer never tastes better than after 10 days in wine country and a 9 hour drive. 4. Did you know that Mozart was from Salzburg (insert huge dose of sarcasm here)??? Because if you didnt, youre reminded about it on every block - visit mozarts birthplace, his early years apartment, his first piano, his first concert hall, his first etc, etc, etc. 5. Editorial notes - in German speaking countries the kezboard is verz different. its crayz. most ... read more

Nested along the Salzach river and amongst the Alps lies the town of Salzburg, Austria. As far as towns go, I would reccomend this place without any hesitations. As a small town (about one hundred and fifty thousand people), it lacks the big city feel that plauges many otherwise beautiful cities. Perhaps the best part of Salzburg is that the company Red Bull is based nearby (in Fuschl am See), so all the sports teams in Salzburg are called "Red Bull" or "the Red Bulls". For much of its history (from the middle ages until quite recently) the whole province of Salzburg was lead by an archbishop and was an independant political entity, even from the Austro-Hungarian Empire of the nineteenth century. The town's landscape is dominated by an abundance of churches (im serious, theres as ... read more

Back in Salzburg it was more of last weekend's fun: so we spent the evening at the festival in town, drinking beer and sekt and checking out all the locals in the lederhosen. We then headed up to the 'Sky Bar' with Christoph and Claudia where we had cocktails and gazed out at the Festung and old town by night, it was really pretty and a good time. Saturday was more family festivities; this time in Upper Austria with 3 more of my grandmother's half sisters and their husbands. Traffic wasn't so good so we drove through Germany, crazy! Lunch was a traditional one at an inn under the trees. It was a special place for the family as two of the sisters met their husbands here when they were waitresses while their mother ran the ... read more
