Our day with the family in Salzburg was great and full of food. We started with breakfast on the terrace of the fluffy cats, admiring the beautiful countryside all around with the green, green fields that stretched on forever and the tree covered hills that headed skyward. There were even a couple of highland cows to entertain us. We met up with the rest of the relatives and headed to a hillside inn just out of Elsbethen for lunch. It had wonderful views over the city and surrounding areas, but not so wonderful singers of folk music. Thankfully the food was fantastic and we tried more of the local grub: blutwurst, sauerkraut, cheeseypasta stuff, strudel, topfenstrudel, straum... it just kept coming. Spent the afternoon exploring the Festung, the Fortress above Salzburg and getting a brief history ... read more

From Pope to convent. We arrived to Salzburg, Austria for a few days of R&R as there was not a whole lot to do here but enjoy the unbelievable picture-postcard scenery. Salzburg lies in a valley. Mountains perched all around. Pastures in the distance. It is separated into New and Old town--Old with the appearance from Mozart's time. With our small, barely furnished room, and the churchbells ringing throughout the night, we feel like we are staying in a convent. Actually, it used to be a hospital. Our window opens out to a narrow cobblestone lane lined with shops and cafes. One of the main attractions is the Hohensalzburg Fortress. Used as the fortress for the archbishop rulers since 1077, it lies on the mountain above the city and towers above all. It was perhaps the ... read more

Our first impression of Salzburg was that it is a very cute city surrounded by beautiful county side. The office at our campground was in a quintessential Alpine house and walking just minutes from our site were spectacular views of farm land, rolling hills, and mountains in the distance. We bought Salzburg cards, which give you free public transportation and admission to many of the sights for a 48 hour period. We started our process of getting the most for our money by taking the funicular (sort of an elevator on rails that go up the side of a hill) up to the Festung Hohensalzburg the fortress that looks down on Salzburg. There were incredible views from the top. The fortress also houses a war museum and marionette museum (creepy!). On the way to lunch we ... read more

Geo: 48.0765, 12.9132Crappy breakfast. Pate and cheese were not good. Ate with the Italian lady and her daughter (the one that helped me with laundry last night). Nice lady, from Torino. Off to Salzburg. Maribell Gardens ... beautiful. Stunning sculptures. Old-town - lively, with a fruit market. Had a burenwurst ... tasty! Kollegiekirche - interesting Baroque style. Mozart's birthplace - boring, but doing something Mozart related is obligatory here. Had a chocolate "Mozart Ball". Unlike the balls that Chef from "South Park" makes, they were not salty chocolate balls. Rather, they were sickly sweet (marzipan?). Continued walking and saw the largest Baroque fountain in the world. Cool. Reminded me of the Bartholdi fountain in Washington, DC, though both are quite different. Went to the "Dom" (cathedral, not an S&M practitioner you sickos!). Just anot... read more

Grüss Gott! In my last entry I talked about Salzburg and a little bit of its history and all that. I’ll talk a little bit more about what I’ve been doing since I got here! The first week was spent auditioning for the teachers and deciding which voice teacher would take which student. We had to pick a 1, 2, and 3rd choice and then after we auditioned, they somehow divided us up based on those choices. Really I think it was just a ploy to be able to hear everyone that was in the program. Either way, we sang.  Let’s see, I am studying with Mary Schiller who is a professor at the Cleveland Institute of Music. She’s very good and I’m glad to be working for her. She has also asked me to ... read more

Guten Tag! Wie Gehts? Ich bin sehr gut! Although this is the beginning of the journal, this is actually the last full week that I will be in Austria. I'm going to begin by basically just saying a little bit about the city and my first experiences here in Austria. The city of Salzburg is just over the German border and is situated in the "hills" as my host family says, but as you will see from my pictures, these hills are really mountains. They are the outskirts of the Alps. The city gets its name from the salt mines that are so previlant in these hills and that is why the town began in the middle ages. Salt, as I'm sure you know, was needed to preserve food, so it was considered very valuable and ... read more

Salzburg would have to be one of the most beautiful cities! ...hard to compare with Prague though. Abit too different. Here everything is so green and pretty. But the weather has been shocking! Has basically been raining since we arrived! Im glad i can read signs though, that is making things alot easier than in Czech! Today we went for a walk from our hostel through the city to Schloss Mirabell. The palace these days is used for the town mayor's offices...so not much to look at inside, but it would have been spectacular back in the day. The gardens totally made up for the slight dissapointment though...beautiful! but the fact that is was raining non stop has made things not as pleasant as they could be. For this 'summer' leg of the journey we only ... read more

Hi friends and family, We are still in Salzburg. We woke up early and apparently we are not supposed to talk to people who are staying the in the same room as you. We "met" the other two girls who are bunking with us this morning and they are not too friendly. We spent an hour in the room with them getting ready, walking around etc... and they refused to acknowledge our presence. Anyways, it was wierd. Like we were ghosts or something. We thought they were mad at us for staying in "their" room. It wasn´t raining this morning, praise the Lord, so we booked another night and rented bicycles and spent the morning and the early part of the afternoon exploring Salzburg and area. We even rode out to Hellbrunn Schloss, where we briefly ... read more

Hi Folks, We are in Salzburg right now. We got here this morning from Münich and immediately fell in love. Since most stores in Münich are closed on Sundays we spent three hours trying to find bread and brie or any other cheese. When we finally found a place in the train station, I (Diana) picked up some cheese to smell and discovered that it had a plethora of maggots feasting on it. I screamed and threw the cheese on the floor and ran away. Lindsey and I were laughing so hard. The grocery guy came over to examine what I had done and gave me a look that one only gives mentally unstable people. I told him what I had discovered and he simply put the cheese back on the shelf. I explained to him ... read more
