We had a brilliant weekend. The christmas markets opened the day we arrived so we saw Salzburg in full festive spirit. Definitely one of the most beautiful cities I have seen. We throughly enjoyed our short break here with an amazing hotel that recommended a local restaurant serving the most fantastic local food and beer. We bought some of the bottles to take home with us it was that good. They brew it on site! We walked the city in a day taking in the sights and view from the fort on the Western most side of the city and walked along the ridgeline to the art museum at the other end for lunch. We joined in the festive spirit and got tiddly on the mulled wine, at the chocolate covered cakey things, jacket potatoes filled ... read more

I got into Salzburg a bit before noon. I bought the Salzburg Card which gives you entrance to all the sites and public transportation. I found the bus number the hostel gave and jumped on. A nice Austrian lady asked where I was going and then told me she'd let me know which stop to get off at. The hosel was a short walk from there. The Youth and Family Guest Hostel is huge - I think it used to be a dorm. I paid and stored my luggage and went ahead and got a 6 euro lunch. Not bad for a chicken rice thing, fruit salad, noodle soup, and a green salad with tomatoes. Then I headed out to find the ticket office for the Salzburg Jazz Herbst. They were sold out of the 7 ... read more

Hot on the heels of the Vienna blog, we present you with a gripping Salzburg edition! Apologies first, its an injustice to the city that we don't have USB facilities to show you how absolutely gorgeous-looking this place is. Travelling through the scenic Austrian countryside to get here raised our expectations and I'm pleased to report that it has lived up to our own hype. It's considerably smaller than what we have got used to visiting and the fact that it is encircled by pine trees and mountains gives it a remote feel. We've certainly gone for it on the new experiences here, we climbed high in a cable car (that Dan didn't feel entirely comfortable with) to the peak of the 1853 metre high Unterberg mountain. Took some breathtaking arty photos that we can't wait ... read more

I've come to a realization: German is a difficult language to "fake" your way through. It's supposed to be the language closest to English and all, but really, it's just hard. Thankfully, my sister knows just enough German to be able to kind of tell me how to get to where she is by following signs (although Amy ;-), I still hold tight to the belief that had you said Hauptbahnhof instead of Hauptbahnplatz or Hauptbahnstrasse, I would have had an easier time.) But all in all, we did well. We got all the right train tickets and didn't have to pay any fines for having the wrong ticket or anything. Thank goodness. I got to Linz late Friday afternoon and then Amy took me to a farmhouse restaurant to have wienerschnitzel. It was quite literally ... read more

Yes, I'm still here. But after all bustling, sleezy Italian men, and wrong trains its nice to stay somewhere for a couple of days. I've been doing day trips and walking through the city. I think this is one of my favorites. Its quiet and calm, but still a city. There is beautiful architecture and its clean. My favorite place to go is up the mountain behind the castle to the abbey with the red roof. This was supposedly the abbey Maria Von Trapp belonged to. I don't know for sure. Walk up all those stairs (theres a lot!) and you find one of the best, most peaceful, views of the back of the city looking towards the mountains. In the afternoon it grows hazy to where you can hardly see the mountains anymore but the ... read more

I have now learned the full and true meaning of the phrase "cold sweat." On my last day in Salzburg I traveled to Werfen (Verfen) to see the largest "accessible" ice caves in the world. When they said accessible they didn't specify that this was no easy task. It being the beginning of autumn the caves closed early each day because it got darker and the caves were warmer than usual. I got there an hour before they closed and had to argue with the man who drove the bus (btw: he spoke no English (great for him, bad for me)) I then watched with amusement as two men from Delhi argued the same point using sweeping hand gestures and loud volumes. The Indians won and the three of us were taken up the mountain to ... read more

Salzburg is gorgeous!! Home of the film Sound of Music and Mozart's birthplace. The leaves are changing colors and the many lakes complete the perfect scenary. Went on an ultra touristy S.O.M. tour (yes, and I also saw Riverdance in Dublin). I saw all the places they filmed the movie and, randomly, the headquarters of Redbull energy drink. Interesting stuff. The RB headquarters are in a small town outside of Salzburg in the middle of no where. The lakes and town are incredibly beautiful here. I would highly recommend this place if you like peaceful towns with great architecture and history (and movie trivia : ) ... read more

With the sound of Rachel and me! Laughing, that is - we had such a great reunion. She met me at the train station and we trolled around Old Salzburg in the rain, eating and having coffee and talking a mile a minute. Zipping through the Austrian countryside via train was beautiful. There were low-hanging clouds and forests that are the stuff of fairytales. Coming into Salzburg I caught a glimspe of the mountains - Rach's "alpity alps" - real mountains, jagged and snow-capped and ancient-looking in the cloudy dusk. On Friday Rachel had class, so I explored the old city on my own, enjoying the beautiful (baroque) churches, squares and elaborate fountains. I particularly enjoyed the water spouting from the statue-horses' noses, with the clipclop of horse feet from the real horses, drawing carriages right ... read more
