Salzburg, the name comes from Salz (salt) and burg (castle) of which the Hohensalzburg Fortress over looks the city and has provided for its protection since 1077. The Salz or salt comes from the salt mines located not far from Salzburg and was the source of its wealth. Although famous for the birthplace of Mozart and the film “The Sound of Music”, Salzburg has been around a long time. Steeped in history, Salzburg was controlled by the Roman Empire around 150 B.C. until the barbarian invasions laid waste to the city. It remained in ruin until about A.D. 700 when it was given to Bishop Rupert by Bavaria. The city was rebuilt and remained an independent state until the arrival of Napoleon around 1800. Well I’m sure many of you are thinking that I’ve been slacking on journaling about my travels. But the real, honest truth is that things have been insanely busy on this side of the world. Not only do I find myself buried in school work but I’m also on sensory overload. There are so many new things and I’ve had so many cultural experiences, all of which have been fun and amazing, but at the same time they can be very draining because of the time it takes to process everything. Just got into Austria after a crappy 3 hour doze overnight in Stansted airport. I busked in the London underground for 3 hours last night near the parliament houses and Big Ben. I only made one lousy pound, but the acoustics were great! And no coppers bugging me either! Had a bit of a busk here just now as well, but Europeans don't seem to know what it means... either that or I just suck... :P The weather here is beautiful and I'm heading off again in an hour down to Slovenia to meet Ash & Alaya! FINALLY! Their van is apparently up and running again so it will be peace love and wurst for all! (do they have wurst in Slovenia? ...i'm not sure...) Hi All, Our trip to Salzburg has gone very well so far. We stopped off at the Swarovski Crystal factory in Innsbruk on the way here. It was a futuristic artistic version of crystal formation. Didn't learn very much but felt very cultured by the end. The shop was the most interesting though. Arrival in Salzburg was hectic and typically European wild driving on narrow streets with pedestrians, bikes, cars and buses all competing for the same 3 ft of space. Our friendly on board navigator insisted we could drive down a one way to reach our hotel. We finally had to gag her and find it ourselves; fortunately double parking is a way of life here.
