We joined the Sound of Music Tour in the morning. Lots of fun, and after watching the movie it was cool to see all the places. We even learned about the real Von Trap family and how they escaped by train. Now they live in Vermont with a guest lodge that has a two year waiting list. We spent the rest of the day wondering about the old town. exploring nooks and crannies. There were many stores with amazing eggshell Christmas ornaments. Too bad it wouldn't make it in our packs through the next two months. That evening we spent the funicular up the fortress. I had a breathtaking view of Salzburg and the surrounding mountains/hills. We had tickets to a concert in the Prince's chambers. Something you never forget, Mozart being played by 2 violinists, ... read more

We were greeted at the hostel by a huge marching band in cowboy outfits doing their warm ups outside. (We found out later they were from Canada). There was a sign in the lobby saying that the Sound of Music played every night at 8pm, so of course we had to watch it. We wandered around the city for the afternoon and it quickly became one of my favorite cities. The pedestrian bridge blasts Mozart from its speakers, and the main shopping street has the most adorable old signs for all the stores, even McDonalds had a fancy sign made out of iron! The city is filled with horse and carriages and there is this hilarious fountain of a horse with water coming out of its nose! If you want to see it, it is in ... read more

This past weekend I traveled to Salzburg, Austria. For those of you who haven't heard of that place before... it is known as the Home of Mozart and The Sound of Music. As far as scenery goes, it is absolutely beautiful- I really enjoyed it! (I will try and put some variety in the words I use so that they aren't all "beautiful," "gorgeous," "pretty," and "amazing," but it will be hard!!) We arrived in Salzburg late Friday night and found our hotel to be much better than we were expecting- if anyone ever goes to Salzburg, I would definitely recommend staying at the Bergland Hotel. It is family run and is about a 10 minute walk from the river/city center. That was really nice because we were there at the beginning of the week-long Mozart ... read more

Well it was time to leave the luxury and fun times we had with Vicki in Munich and hit the road and campsites again. Whilst part of us was looking forward to our onward journey, we also loved being stationary for a while. We had already decided that maybe we were getting too old for the camping lark, and that next time we decided to do a big trip like this that maybe we would just get a nice big campervan and do camping in style. We left Munich and headed down to Berchtesgaden, which was a major Nazi seat of power and home to many of the major players of the party. Hitler himself had a 'summer residence' called Eagles Nest, but hardly ever actually went there. We were on a tight schedule as we ... read more

So I just got done checking out the Mozart Wohnhaus. The place he lived while he was 17-24. They had replicas of old harpsichords and pianos and lots of old manuscripts which were great to look at. He has some crazy handwriting, sometimes you can´t tell whats going on. They also had exhibits on his dad and sister both of whom were musicians and composers in their own right, but they lived in the shadow of good ol´Wolfe so no noteriety for them. The house Mozart was born in is here too but we haven´t found it, we actually just stumbled onto the Wohnhaus because it was across the street from a sausage kart. We also checked out this crazy fortress this morning that kept Salzburg safe in many battles. The fortress was only taken over ... read more

So I want to apologize for not writing for so long... I can give you a slew of excuses about how eastern europe makes it a bit harder to get to internet or how the damn german and austrian keyboards have missplaced letters which make it really frustrating to type... but those aren't really legit excuses. I am currently in Salzburg, I havent seen anything yet but I'm here for a day and then heading to my last stop in Munich. So far since I've written I've hit Berlin, Prague, Budapest, and Vienna all of which I met amazing people in and had a blast visiting. So far my list of potential places to move to consists of Edinburgh, Berlin, and Vienna. I don't really know where to start in terms of describing all of done ... read more

So I left Vienna and headed to Salzburg and stayed with a student from couchsurfing in his apartment for the night. I walked around Salzburg only to discover that the entire old city is made purely for tourists. I didn't really like it much. Then it started to pour so I headed back to the apartment after only spending 5 hours exploring the old city. The architecture was beautiful as well as the mountains but like I said, too many obnoxious foreigners.... read more

Salzburg Originally I was planning on spending two nights in Salzburg, but when I realized how quaint the city was, I decided to stay Vienna for Saturday night. While it may not have been the best place to party, I absolutely recommend visiting if you are ever in the area. The town is famous for being the birthplace of Mozart and it's ties to classical music, but what I found most alluring was the breathtaking backdrop of the mountains just off in the distance. Perched high above the old town, a castle overlooks the valley and the city below. There is a restaurant on one of the terraces of the fortress that has amazing views. As I sat there drinking a beer at sunset, I realized that that moment alone made the stop in Salzburg worth ... read more
