Thought I'd post some fun pics that didn't fit into the other entries, that other teachers have taken, or that I just realised I had. I also tried to figure out the videos and thought I had them loaded but then couldn't publish my entry so that sucks. Oh well. Enjoy!... read more

Things to NOT take advantage of as a Teacher Back Home - Having a photocopier with a password that allows you to do your own photocopying, instead of dropping it off to someone, hoping that it will be done properly and on time (usually needs to be dropped off a day in advance) - Having a curriculum to follow - MUCH better than teaching out of ONE given book per subject - Children’s Books - these are hard to find here, especially in English - A Gymnasium - when all you have is a basketball court outside in the heat, it can be tricky for large games or activities you are hoping to accomplish - A school where noise doesn’t carry - teaching in a school that is set up like a mall (where sounds are ... read more

Eight in the morning is usually a late morning here for us in Honduras, however it felf very early to me as I had only had two hours of sleep the night prior. It would have been a day for sleeping in had we not had plans to go to the small town (more like village) of Rio Negro, which is about a 2 hour drive up a mountain from the city of Comayagua. Chris (Mr. Chris, grade 3) had asked around earlier in the week to see if there would be anyone interested in going up to Rio Negro with himself and Hector in Hector's Land Cruiser that usually runs on vegetable oil (I will never get over that. Too cool!). Hector is an acquintance of Chris' who, as I learned on the way up ... read more

Given the that we had next Monday off of school due to a national celebration of some historical figure, Sarah and I decided to head to Tegucigalpa for a couple days to explore. And by explore, I mean explore the mall. It was huge. Its hard to even put it into words. Although.... I should probably start from the beginning. So, we set off Saturday morning to catch the bus from Comayagua (my new home) to Tegucigalpa (capital of Honduras). Upon arriving at the bus station, we attempted to buy tickets in the bus station. The man behind the counter told us no, no tickets. After a short discussion, we realized that he wasn't telling us they were sold out. There were just just no such things as tickets for this bus. You get on the ... read more

Dia de los Ninos.... So it has been a while, way too long I should say, as childs day was nearly a month and a half ago now. 7th-11th grade celebrates childs day by visiting different "poor schools" and bringing pinatas, candy and food and playing games with the kids of these schools. I went with the 7th grade to a pre-school just outside of Comayagua. My kids had several games prepared and led the pre-schoolers in all of them. While this was going on Mercedes, my co-teacher, took me outside to show me three men standing next to three giant SUVs, those, she said, were the bodyguards of one of our students. THE BODYGUARDS!!! She went on to explain to me that the cement factory and the string of big rigs we passed on the ... read more

Its never good to wake up with a fever and chills, but even worse to wake up here with a fever and chills. I didn't feel so hot this morning when I woke so I wrote about 6 pages of directions for the sub and asked Sarah to let Mr. Cesar (our principal) know I was sick. I soon thereafter curled up on the couch underneath my down comforter and fell back asleep. When I woke up, there was three men standing over me. Although I was startled, I realized it was the school maintenence man and two of the workers who had come to fix our water tanks. After a two minute conversation and Saoul (little maintenance man) feeling my forehead, he called the school from our phone to let them know, apparently, that I ... read more

After a long weekend in the Caribbean, it was time to go grocery shopping. I made a surprising discovery today. I actually found something a little more exciting than tortillas and beans that I could make for dinner. Supermercado Jumbo has coconut milk, curry powder, and asian noodles and had snow peas, peppers, and onions in their produce section. I was so excited! When I got home I set to work making vegetable curry. And it worked! (A special thanks to my bestest friend from back home who taught me how to make curry who is now living in Burma: Christina, it will never be as good as yours but it was a great break from beans and tortillas). Anyhow, I took pictues just so my mom would believe that I actually cooked :) Everyone knows ... read more

Today was our only day of school this week. Tomorrow there is no school because we will be marching in the parade and Wednesday-Friday there will be no school due to the national holiday. I 've found a one day school week to be relatively pointless but we had fun playing games and catching up on homework and all that jazz. I had a student bring me a CD he made today. I don't know what to make of it. He may be trying to tell me I have bad taste in music. During quiet work time, I always put on music and if the noise level is above the music then work time is done. However, I don't think this music would be appropriate for work time as it is mostly reggaeton (spanish hip hop, ... read more

After a long day of ponponara practice, Sarah and I headed for home and promptly passed out for a few hours. We almost didn't get up Saturday night and once we did, we really had no ambition to go out. Being the troopers that we are however, we prettied ourselves up for a night of dancing and went out to explore a new bar we had heard about from some friends. What we discovered that night: (11pm-2am) 1. It is easy to make an ass out of yourself by wandering around the first floor of a building when the bar is on the second floor. 2. The security people will notice your confused expressions and lead you upstairs. 3. When you ask the bartender to surprise you with a mixed drink, it will be cheap and ... read more

Not much to report from the beginning of this weekend. I felt absolutely horrible Friday morning and thought that I might pass out in front of my class. Another teacher mentioned this to our principal, Mr. Cesar, who promptly started 20 questions. Being that I was feeling nauseous and it was the morning, I'm thinking he might have been thinking one of two things - I was hungover or I was pregnant. I would choose the first any day. Either way, Mr. Cesar was very sweet. He made the maintenance man run to the grocery store to get me some tea and then took over giving my class a spelling pretest so I could drink it in peace. Amazingly enough it made me feel better for a bit. What also made my day was the fact ... read more
