School was basically much of the same today. Although after school, at about 2pm in the hot Honduran sun, I got to play basketball with some other teachers and the principal. It was a ton of fun. However, everytime the principal would knock me over or I would fall down on my own because I'm clumsy, he would stop the game and make sure I was okay. I told him it was fine, keep playing, but I don't think he really got it. If nothing else it was good exercise. After we were done playing, Sarah, Chris, and I took our sweaty selves to the school supply store so I could find bulletin board borders. The closest things that they had were wallpaper boarders for babies' rooms. I opted to make my own boarders from paper. ... read more

It was bound to happen. To be honest I am surprized it didn't happen sooner. At a soccer game between Honduras and Costa Rica in Comayagua (a rare occasion) I was first asked if I was Eruopean or Gringa... when I learned that, here, Gringa refers only to those from the US, not just any white person. Iwas then asked the inevitable, "Do you like Bush?" Herein lies the reason why Canadians appear so much more patriotic then us gringos... were we to walk around with giant American flags on our packs who knows the dangers we might be putting ourselves in. Very few people like us, and it's getting fewer and fewer everyday. So I guess I'll be a proud Canadian for a while, till some change comes about. ... read more

My computer has been revived from where computers go when they die in Comayagua - the owner of the local Chinese food restaurant. Today after we arrived home from school, we heard a knocking on our door. Nadia went to answer it and was very confused as to who the chinese man was standing in the doorway. As Sarah and I came to look, we realized Mauricio (school administrator) was also there. AND they brought me a fixed computer. I was so excited that I wanted to hug the guy but I don't think he was the hugging type. The other excitement for the day was the kamakazi beetle. We were watching School of Rock in Kari, Jeff, and Chris' house next door and a huge beetle flew in, would hoover and then dive into people's ... read more

So after basically a 6 day vacation, I started work yesterday at Escuela Bilingue Honduras. I'm very excited for the kids to come in about 2 weeks. We had a meeting with all the staff yesterday and all staff was able to meet each other. Today, I went to a training with the Spanish Speaking staff on how to use Microsoft movie maker on the computer. It is beyond cool. I'm hoping to make the equivelent of a supercool powerpoint of the my stay here using movie maker. Other than that my last two days have consisted of doing annual planning at the school. (annual planning: a very tedious process whereby we are required to plan out the whole year using a hodgepodge of teacher's guides which between two fifth grade teachers we have the whole ... read more

Today we went to the Costa Rica vs Honduras soccer game in which "we" tied Costa Rica but lost to them in the tournament anyway because they beat Nicaragua by more than "us". We learned many things at the stadium however. One: Honduras is pronounced Own-Doo-Rahs during the cheers and if you pronounce the name of their country wrong, hondurans will not hestitate to laugh at you. Two: Even if you wear honduran soccer jerseys, people still know you're North American. Three: There might be pictures floating around of me out there somewhere as quite a few people took pictures of us with their camera phones. The best part of the day however, was getting a ride back to the house honduran style - in the back of a pick up. Even though we got rained ... read more

I am a spaz...I captioned one of my earlier pictures wrong. The cathedral in the picture is in Plaza Colonial not Plaza Merced. Plaza Merced is just a smaller version of Plaza Colonial about 5 or 6 blocks away. I was confused. Nothing new. So I went for a walk around town today to try to gain my bearings on where everything was. For a town of 70,000 people it still seems very small. I went to the grocery store and discovered a very interesting product - beans in a bag. Its like a refried bean paste and all you have to do is stick it in the microwave according to the bag. That, however, is a bad idea because there is like an aluminum type wrap on the bag and it will make the microwave ... read more

Today as I was walking around town, I was passed by a bus with "Minneapolis Metro School District" written accross the side of it. I felt a little twang of homesickness. After taking a freezing cold shower again today, I was ready for some hugs from home and some head start :) But the day was redeemed when I got a honduran newpaper and was able to read the world news. Later in the day Leah (new teacher from utah) arrived and we all made spaghetti dinner. We decided to return to Villa Real (where we discovered Port Royal) after dinner. The coolest thing about the whole night was that we met people from the Costan Rican soccer team and I even danced with one. Although, I have to say that I had more fun dancing ... read more

So, I arrived at O'hare airport at 3:00 am, a little hung over and a lot tired. The American desk wasn't even opening till 4:30 am, wish I might have known that. While waiting I discoved from several TSA personnel that something had happened in London, "I wouldn't plan on getting very far today..." They said, not very encouraging. By the time waiting in line became necessary I was aware of bombs, and 20 arrests in London. I was one of the lucky few to learn that "liquids, creams or gels" would not be permitted and was able to put them in my checked luggage. I watched several people throw out perfume, hair products and even mayonnaise. My flight was very late leaving Chicago and I literally had to run to make my connecting flight in ... read more

This morning I went to the school for a tour and to meet the principal. Mauricio, one of the administrators was supposed to pick up Sarah, Jill, and I between 8:30-9am to bring us to the school. At 11am I called the school, he assured us that he would be there in 5 minutes. 30 minutes later he arrived at the house. Somehow I feel like I'll fit in here just wonderfully. The school is huge (by Honduran stardards). It has two floors with an open air middle and apparently used to be a shopping mall. I will try to post pictures of the school soon. They don't have any room assignments or class lists but hopefully that will be done before school starts in less than three weeks. After my tour, Melissa, one of the ... read more

After a very stressful flight and arrival into the Tegucigalpa (capital of Honduras) airport, I have finally arrived at my new home, Comayagua, Honduras. I arrived at the Ohare airport this morning at 4:30a.m. which is very lucky considering the hotel failed to give us wake up calls. After a tearful goodbye to my mom and an hour of waiting in line to check in, I was informed that I would not be able to fly into Honduras on a one way ticket. Apparently they wanted assurance that I would leave their country at some point. After I smooth talked my way through that, I arrived in Tegucigalpa without anyone to pick me up at the airport. I looked in every nook and cranny of the airport for someone holding a sign with my name but ... read more
