Geo: -3.10719, -60.0261When we docked at Manaus in Brazil, all we could see was a fairly industrial landscape. It is the capital of the Amazonas state with a population of over 2 million. In years gone by it was very wealthy due to rubber plantations and lots of lovely buildings were built. The rubber trade was lost to Malaysia and now it depends on producing electronics. Our trip round the city by bus showed us both the poor end and the rich end of the city. We went to the zoo to see all the species of animal that are found in the rain forest which we will not get to see in the wild, so we saw a jaguar, caiman reptiles, various birds, turtles and monkeys. The zoo, which is pleasantly laid out is actually ... read more

Geo: -15.3689, -94.1309Today the ship moored off Boca de Valeria which means mouth of the river Valeria and we were tendered over to a landing stage where loads of kids were waiting to greet us and hopefully "adopt" one of us for a dollar. Managed to successfully get past this lot and walk into the village. All the wooden houses are built on stilts because during the rainy season the plains are flooded, at which time everyone uses a canoe to get from place to place. We saw the school, church and local bar. Today was obviously a holiday because the ship was in. Some of the kids were dressed up as native Indians; others were holding birds, crickets, dead caimans all for a dollar photo or gift of some kind. We walked on to the ... read more

Geo: -2.42481, -54.7162Santarem in Brazil is a busy city. There are lots of little shops, busy one way streets, cracked pavements for the unwary, but the place has a buzz to it. From here we took a small boat up the river to see the meeting of the waters. This is where the muddy brown fast flowing cooler Amazon meets the slower, warmer bluer River Tapajos. There is a complete separation of the two rivers for a distance of 4 kilometres and the difference is quite startling to see. There is a complete cut off in colouring as the two rivers flow side by side- brown (technically white water) and clear water. On the way we saw grey dolphins, a pink dolphin (no dorsal fin), a black vulture, kingfishers, cormorants, a 3 toed sloth, a brown ... read more

Geo: 11.18, -60.74Today we added another Scarborough to our collection. Apart from the original in the UK, we have been to one in Australia, South Africa and both North and South America. This Scarborough was in Tobago in the Caribbean. We had opted for a trek in the rain forest, which involved an early start because to get to the rainforest there was over an hour's drive in a somewhat bumpy minivan. However it did mean we got to see quite a bit of the island and guess what, it looks like all the others! In other words there was lots of lush greenery and pretty coastline generally spoilt by a hotchpotch of buildings, some painted in very garish colours, far too many cars and far too much litter. Once at the rain forest we were ... read more

Geo: 14.03, -60.98It was another hot and sunny day as we docked at Castries in St.Lucia. We boarded the bus and were taken first to an "old" colonial house which belonged to a famous local. There were only two rooms to see as the family were still living upstairs but they did contain some lovely Lalique glassware, mahogany furniture and porcelain. We were given a refreshing glass of rum punch with piece of banana cake after this tour. The house was only built in 1942 and as our house was built in 1876 I might start doing tours!Back on the bus we were next taken to a view point overlooking Marigot Bay, but there was only a small viewing platform as most of the space was filled with souvenir shops. The next stop was supposedly in ... read more

Geo: 17.8981, -62.8511The pretty island of Saint Barthelemy, commonly known as St.Barts, is a French colony, which I didn't realize otherwise would have brought our Euros which is their local currency. The capital is Gustavia so called after the Swedish monarch King Gustaf from the time it was owned by the Swedes. The Swedes sold it back to the French in 1878. The ship moored off the coast as the island has only a small harbour and we had a 15 minute tender to get to the mainland. Like most Caribbean islands it is volcanic in origin but has some lovely beaches and the weather is hot and sunny with very little rain although the island is covered in green vegetation. There are plenty of duty free shops selling top of the range French goods. Not ... read more

North America » United States » Florida » Miami November 27th 2012

Geo: 25.7615, -80.2939The BA staff on the flight over from Heathrow to Miami were very attentive, even allowing Ted onto the flight deck. The food and service were good but the seats are just not wide enough or long enough to sleep in so it was just as well it was a day flight. Immigration into the USA was amazingly quick even though they take a photograph and do your fingerprints. The staff have obviously been well trained as they are now friendly and chatty. The transfer to the Epic hotel, one of the Kimpton chain, in downtown Miami was equally rapid so we found ourselves at 9pm all settled in to our spacious modern room on the 20th floor. One tip to avoid jet lag is always to adjust your watch to the new time ... read more

Geo: 44.304, 9.20777Portofino is a tiny harbour which was once a fishing village and is now a harbour to wealthy people with yachts. Our ship moored off shore and we were tendered into the harbour. Seeing some steps we set off up the side of the cliff, coming across the Castle Brown, which was closed for a wedding reception but we did see the bride arriving. After walking along a narrow path we realised that it led nowhere except to the lighthouse and a Gelateria so we headed back into the town. On the way we popped into the Church of San Georgio, which his reputed to contain the relics of St.George. They were decorating it for another wedding as we arrived so it looked very pretty. Geo: 39.5695, 2.65002Although we set off at 10am, it was already hot and sunny. The shuttle bus took us from the dock to the front, close to the Cathedral and passing the largest marina I have ever seen- completely full of yachts and ships of all sizes. A wedding of some important person was taking place in the Cathedral, police guards and lots of expectant people, so we couldn't visit it, so we visited the Royal Palace of La Almudaina. There are several tapestries and some lovely wooden cabinets and it is a lovely old building so if you have half an hour to spare it is worth a visit. When we came out the wedding was over and we could enter the Cathedral. There is an amazingly modern chapel by Barcelo whose work we had ... read more

Geo: 38.9129, 1.4423To get to Ibiza we had joined Silver Sea's Silver Spirit in Barcelona and sailed overnight. We joined the ship the previous day in time for lunch (of course- because the food is very good!). The Sail away party was at 6pm followed by drinks in the bar and then dinner. We met lots of people on this first night so good socialising.I was expecting Ibiza to be a bit like Torremolinos so didn't have high hopes. However the ship docked at Eivissa, an old port and marina and we were pleasantly surprised. From the dock we were bussed nearer to the town and then walked up the steep streets with many steps and passageways to the Dalt Vila or old town, which is very pretty and lined by little shops and nice looking ... read more
