Oceania » Australia » South Australia » Goolwa March 17th 2012

Geo: -35.5026, 138.785Borrowing Marie's car, the four of us drove south east of Adelaide to Goolwa on the Fleurieu peninsula. Here Mark has a drop zone at Goolwa Airpark for those who want to go sky diving. We were there however for the Warbird flight. The plane is a single engine CJ 6 A Fighter, a real Biggles job with pilot in front and passenger behind. Zoran the lovely handsome Croatian pilot explained all the manoeuvres the plane could do before kitting the passenger (me first) out in a parachute (just in case but hopefully never used). Out on the tarmac Mark films the whole episode of getting into the plane, which involves clambering onto the wing and swinging over the side onto the seat. There are also cameras on the plane filming the trip so ... read more

Geo: -34.9258, 138.6It is an hour and a half flight from Sydney to Adelaide and prices are reasonable if you go Jetstar or Virgin. A friend called Mark picked us up and took us to Glenelg, a suburb of Adelaide which has a marina and a few old colonial buildings mixed in with the new. The weather is warmer and sunnier here than in Sydney and it was in the 30's when we arrived, which was unusual for March, when it is usually about 25 degrees. After a stroll around we stopped for lunch at Sammy's seafood restaurant on the Marina for oysters, seafood chowder and seafood fettuccini- lovely, before Mark gave us a lift to the Hyde Park area where we were staying with Holly's parents, Rod and Marie. They gave us a rapturous welcome ... read more

Geo: -34.3333, 150.917The transfer from Chiang Mai to Sydney via Bangkok was painless and we even sailed through the Australian Immigration system and were allowed to bring in the wooden bowl which we had bought in Chiang Mai as a present for Helen. A car took us to Bulli where Helen and Wildy live high on the escarpment. At least there is no chance of flooding where they live. Lots of places locally have been flooded because of the wettest summer ever. Our first day however was sunny so in the evening we were able to go to Wollongong Botanical Gardens and watch a production of Twelfth Night while picnicking on the grass- excellent entertainment.Lunch the following day after a shopping expedition, was at the Harbour side restaurant in Wollongong to which we have been before ... read more

Asia » Thailand » North-West Thailand » Chiang Mai March 10th 2012

Geo: 18.8, 98.98The last 3 days have gone by in a whirl though most of it was spent lazing by the pool as it is so hot. Stefan discovered that he had brought odd sandals so this stimulated a trip to the shopping mall called the Central Airport Shopping Plaza. They only had one pair of men's sandals and luckily had the right size. I have never seen so much awful ladies clothing under one roof! However they did have a Teddy Bear shop so sandals and shorts were purchased for Ted. We should have stayed at the hotel for dinner as the 7th March is a big Buddhist festival and no where was serving alcohol. We had a simple meal at the Riverside restaurant accompanied by 7 Up! A family of Mozzy bites have moved ... read more

Asia » Thailand » North-West Thailand » Chiang Mai March 5th 2012

Geo: 18.8, 98.98We were tired out by the time we reached Chiang Mai having taken 3 flights. However the Emirates First Class was worth it even though we had to change at Dubai on the way to Bangkok. At Dubai airport Tiz had a complimentary foot massage in the lounge. The suites on board the plane were spacious with a 25" TV screen, vanity case, personal bar and comfy flat bed. There was even a bar you could go to and stand at so with all these facilities not much sleep was had and hence we were tired! The transfer from Bangkok to ChiangMai was straight forward with no waiting and there was a car waiting to take us to the Dhara Dhevi Mandarin Oriental, which is my favourite hotel in the world and this was ... read more

Europe » Greece » Attica » Athens October 3rd 2011

Geo: 37.9792, 23.7166After the cruise we disembarked in Piraeus and waited for our taxis which had been booked ahead. We needn't have bothered as there were lots of taxis waiting. As it happened our guys were waiting in Terminal 1 and we were in Terminal B so we had a bit of a wait while we found each other. It was a short journey to the King George Palace Hotel in Syntagma Square. The entrance is grand and the rooms have lovely furniture but are rather dark. The Athenians obviously don't like the sun in their rooms. As the rooms weren't ready we set off to find a bar and then found a restaurant in the Plaka area. An excellent meal but we could have ordered half the dishes as the portions are huge. After lunch ... read more

Europe » Greece October 2nd 2011

Geo: 36.4044, 25.3959The following morning the ship moored off Santorini and I went on a hike up the volcano whilst the others went into town. At the top of the volcano there was heat and some smoke coming out but no lava as it is not very active at the moment. I was glad I had worn my hiking boots and taken a walking stick. Most of the others were in trainers and ended up with shoes full of stones. I had made that mistake on a previous trip up Mount Etna. Unfortunately I had forgotten to take my swimming gear as part of the trip was a swim from the small sailing boat which had taken us over to the volcano. And as it was very hot that would have been good.As it was last ... read more

Europe » Greece October 1st 2011

Geo: 39.5062, 21.6156Despite not meaning to overdo it again- we of course did! Consequently when we arrived in Katakolon, we were too late to go up to Olympia where the first Olympic Games were held and instead went on a tourist train, which was probably a Disney throw out. The trip round a few houses and a hotel car park, was memorable! However it was a good laugh. At least the tourist shops had some decent souvenirs. The ship departed at lunchtime so we hastened back on board and joined in the afternoon activities which for me were the Trivia Quiz, enrichment lecture on Islam, and trip to the hairdresser as well as the usual sunbathing and reading on deck while being brought a drink every 5 minutes from the attentive waiters.... read more

Europe » Greece » Ionian Islands » Corfu September 30th 2011

Geo: 39.6178, 19.9196After a week of total indulgence we were all feeling worse for wear when the ship pulled into Corfu. The result of this meant a much curtailed visit which is a shame because I am sure it has lot to offer. We did manage to visit the Museum of Asian Art which has some beautiful objects in it and it is peaceful, cool and far from the madding crowd. We looked at the Old Fort from the entrance and decided that it would be too much effort to climb up, so apart from a regulation beer in the colonnade that was Corfu for us.... read more

Oceans and Seas » Atlantic » Atlantis September 29th 2011

Geo: 42.4441, 18.781629th Sept 2011 and it is very hot and sunny. The ship docks offshore at Kator in Montenegro and we are tendered off to the port. There are two other cruise ships in dock, one very large old one and a much smaller yacht. We prefer our ship. Once ashore we walk along to the old city gate and into the old town which is very attractive with narrow streets, the pavements of which have become very flat and shiny with thousands of travellers walking over them. The narrow streets open out into squares with lots of bars and restaurants. We stop for the obligatory beer. The currency is Euros and 6 of the local beers cost about 12 Euros. There are several palaces and museums to visit but we content ourselves with strolling ... read more
