Geo: 41.3879, 2.16992Even though we have been to Barcelona 3 times before, the place always looks different, possibly because staying in a different area gives a different perspective. This time we were in the Europark hotel which is in the Eixample district and convenient for all sites. Our room was on the 9th floor and had a balcony which came into its own on the first night when we sat out on it with a bottle of wine when we got back from dinner. The rooms are black/white modern with a lovely big bed. Bathrooms very modern but not large. Our first foray was towards the Arc de Triomf and into the Parque Ciutadella- a lovely walk through wide paths lined by palm trees, stopping for our first beer on the way. Continuing south we ended up ... read more

Geo: 54.2801, -0.402401Scarborough was always a resort we came to for a day trip when I was a child. Later when my parents retired there, we used to take both our kids there too. My daughter still thinks of Scarborough whenever she hears seagulls as here they must be the loudest in the world. The hotel we stayed in was surprisingly good and had a lovely large modern bedroom with a huge bathroom ( Londesborough room). Breakfast was freshly cooked to order and there was no microwave or tinned mushrooms involved, but instead a huge plate of everything you could think of. The fried bread which I never get at home was particularly good. The waitress also remembered that we like lemon and honey with our tea. It was so nice to once more be able ... read more

Geo: 54.2759, -1.97506I had spent many happy times camping in the Dales in my youth and subsequently we had taken the kids usually over a New Year with friends to a rented cottage. This time we rented an apartment in a converted mill by a stream in West Burton, a very picturesque village situated halfway between Leyburn and Hawes. The apartment comprised of one double and two twin bedrooms and a large lounge/dining kitchen. It was very well provided with everything we would need though we had taken our own provisions for self catering. The most delightful surprise was to enter the apartment up a short flight of steps and then have a view overlooking the river from 3 floors up at the rear of the property. Also, only 2 minutes walk away was a little ... read more

Geo: 53.1896, -1.61355For the first 2 days of our "staycation", we returned to the Peacock hotel in Rowsley. This was our third visit, the reason being that we were having a reunion of retired medical friends we had known for a long time. As people were coming from all over the country this was a central meeting place. Also the hotel has two private dining rooms as well as the main dining room and this suited our need for seating 10 on the first night and 14 on the second. The rooms are nicely furnished but the bathrooms are small. However it is an old inn set in lovely countryside and the owners are very friendly and helpful. We were greeted with a pot of complimentary tea which we took in the garden. The food is ... read more

Geo: 44.3769, 9.09393Collioure to Pieve, near Genoa is approximately an 8 hour drive via motorway across the whole of the south of France passing Nice, Cannes and Monaco. I wish we had had time to call into these places but we didnt. The drive is straightforward but half the "Aires" ie picnic spots were closed for renovation and the other half were like building sites with varying facilities- not the best project management I have ever seen. However eventually we found a spot with a good table and had our picnic only to find the loo was closed and we had to drive to the next stop.Eventually we arrived at Pieve Alta the other side of Genoa in Italy. Alex was there to direct us to where we could unload the car and then we had ... read more

Geo: 42.5245, 3.08232The drive from Rognonas to Collioure takes approx 3 hours. We were staying at the villa of friends Ann & Ian whom we picked up 2 days later from Perpignan airport. Collioure is a very attractive seaside town which once was a major attraction for Matisse and Derain because of it's light and picturesque views. Our first foray was around the harbour and by the Royal Palace. In the main square there were crowds of people and we ended up watching several lively dances by people in local costume, which was an unexpected surprise. There are many little side streets in Collioure full of art and gift shops and a multitude of restaurants , many overlooking the sea. Our first meal was at the Amphyteriyon. The food was good and we had a view ... read more

Geo: 43.8983, 4.80329Fontaine St.Vaucluse is yet another very pretty town with river flowing through it. You can go kayaking there, which we had done before. This time we did our usual stroll through the town buying yet more stuff- pretty tablecloths, tablemats, napkin holders, earrings etc. I always say we will never buy another thing but stuff always looks so much nicer in these lovely shops. We were relatively sensible for luch and only had one course at a place by the river. We thought that the Abbaye Senanque was close by but it ended up being quite a drive. Still it is a pretty place though it looks much more romantic in July when the lavender in front of it is in full bloom. Our last evening with Ian and Pierre was spent at a restaurant ... read more

Geo: 44.0563, 4.83163A trip to Chateauneuf-du-pape is a must for wine lovers. Most of the town is given over to caves for the sampling thereof. First we visited the Chateau after which it is named but this is just a remnant of old wall so not much to see. Sometimes they have exhibitions on but not when we visited. There is ample free carparking so it is possible to park there and walk down into town, where it is difficult to park. Having purchased our wine we drove out of town to the Hostellerie du Chateau des Fines Roches, a beautiful hotel set up among the vineyards. Here we had a magnificent lunch out on the terrace with very good service. There were 22 and 27 euro menus and the wine was also not expensive.Once again ... read more

Geo: 44.05, 5.05There was a good end to the lost cat story. The owners were contacted and they came and collected the cat which had been lost for 2 months since they had moved locally so they were very pleased. We went to Domaine de Marotte near Carpentras. This is a vineyard owned by a Dutch couple so we did lots of wine tasting before having a picnic brought out to us in baskets at a table overlooking the vines. The 6 of us had a pleasant afternoon eating various pates, tapenades and cheeses, melon and strawberries. The weather was perfect, sunny but with a breeze. The prices of wine in the shop were very reasonable so we bought a case of wine as well as some other souvenirs they have on show.Back home later it was the ... read more

Geo: 43.7885, 4.83167St.Remy is always worth a visit because of it's nice shops and side streets. I tried to find the house that Van Gogh painted but am not sure whether I did as the buildings have changed somewhat since his day. After lunch in the Cafe de la Place which serves huge salads and a very good rose wine we drove a short distance out of town to the Cloitre St.Paul. This was the Mental hospital to which Van Gogh voluntarily committed himself. There are lots of reproductions of his paintings but also some original photos and descriptions of the daily life of the hospital, which was very regimented and not too pleasant for the in mates. However Van Gogh was allowed a spare room to use as a studio while he was there and ... read more
