Geo: -16.4958, 145.467Port Douglas lays an hour's drive north of Cairns airport. The entrance to the town is via a long palm tree lined road with plenty of top of the range hotels and resorts dotted along it. We were staying at the Mantra Aqueous apartments in the centre of town. I am a total convert to staying in an apartment rather than a hotel as there is more room and flexibility. All we had to do was call at the supermarket which was located on the Port Douglas road leading into town and stock up on wine and stuff for breakfast. Room 17 on the first floor overlooks the pool and has a spa bath on the balcony. We had to try that with glass of wine in hand naturally! The town itself is full ... read more

Geo: -35.3284, 149.084Having flown from Ayers Rock to Sydney and then caught a cab to Bulli, we arrived at Helen's to find her busy organising a party. No time to change before people arrived. It was really good to catch up with her friends and neighbours again and eat a terrific meal out on the deck, but inevitably too much wine was drunk, which did not bode well for the relatively early start the next morning!Helen drove us down the coast stopping briefly at Kiama to see the blow hole which was impressive because the onshore winds were bringing big waves in. There are lovely views and a sandy beach here with loads of free parking so it is worth getting off the Prince's Highway and having a look. We drove further down the coast to ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Northern Territory » Ayers Rock January 28th 2013

Geo: -25.3393, 130.889"Sails in the Desert" is one of the best hotels in Ayers Rock Resort and has even been refurbished further since our last visit. We had flown overnight from Singapore to Sydney and had no sleep thanks to watching movies, dining etc. The transfer to Domestic for the flight to Ayers Rock was thankfully swiftly done as was the transfer by coach to the hotel. It had been raining in Sydney but here in the red centre of Australia it was hot and sunny. After the inevitable beer by the pool on arrival, we crashed out in our room and slept for 3 hours to catch up. The rooms are lovely and large as is the bathroom, much better than the hotel in Singapore. We had prebooked the “Sounds of Silence” dinner as I ... read more

Geo: 1.28941, 103.85Traders Hotel in Singapore is a medium range hotel, modern spacious rooms, nice pool and good very busy cavernous restaurant. Its main disadavantage is that it is out of the city centre and a taxi ride for which there is always a queue is essential. Fortunately we had walked all around the centre on previous visits when we had stayed around the Marina so we looked for where we could walk to from this hotel. The nearest place of note are the Botanical Gardens and these are really worth a visit. They are set in acres of ground beautifully laid out with thousands of varieties of tropical plants and trees and vistas of lakes and odd sculptures along the easy to walk along pathways. There was a fascinating Evolution garden which took you through ... read more

Geo: 25.729, -80.2374Having disembarked the ship at Miami by 9am, we had 9 hours to kill before our flight home. We had therefore prebooked a city tour along with all the other Brits in the same situation. The beauty of it was that all our luggage was collected outside the terminal and stored for the day. We then piled onto the Big Red Bus- an open top double decker. The first part of the tour was to Miami Beach. There is an interesting stretch of buildings on the shore line which were built in the 1920s, called the Art Deco district. Most of them are hotels with eateries on the ground floor but the bus was a better way of seeing the architecture than walking. They are all the equivalent of our grade listed buildings and ... read more

Geo: 18.4672, -66.1179The previous time we had been to San Juan in Puerto Rico, it was a Sunday and everything was closed so we didn't get a feeling for the place. This time the ship docked in the bay on a Saturday and the whole place was very lively. We caught a free trolley bus which took us up to the San Cristobal Castle and also gave us a general view of the town. Puerto Rico was heavily fortified by the Spanish 250 years ago because it was an ideal deep harbour for all the ships coming over from Europe on route to America. The top of the castle gives good views of the town and the walls are very thick so would have given good defence. For $5 each our ticket also gave us entrance ... read more

Geo: 17.0817, -61.8077The ship docked at St.John, the capital of the pretty island of Antigua, which is also paired with the smaller island of Barbuda. Outside a man using water jets to fly over the water caused quite a stir. He made it look so easy and it certainly looked fun. We left the ship and were bussed over to the other side of the island to a beach where we were briefed about how to handle stingrays without harming them or ourselves. After the short briefing we sailed out to sea to a landing stage in an area of shallow water. I was a little nervous at first as I don't really take to water. However it was only 4 foot deep close to the landing stage. We were issued with snorkels and masks so ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Barbados » Bridgetown December 13th 2012

Geo: 13.11, -59.61A lovely sunny day with a light breeze greeted us when we docked at Bridgetown, Barbados. The island was named after the bearded fig, a type of tree which has hanging threads on it which look like beards. Our first visit was to Gun Hill Point. This is a restored lookout tower high on a hill. Several of these were built following the slave riots on the sugar plantations. Communication between them was by signals by flags during the day and beacons at night. If there was a problem the cannon would be fired before the flag messages went up. Only this one tower now remains. After this we drove through several parishes all named after Saints and noted the different type of housing – rich, poor and middle class all mixed up in ... read more

South America » French Guiana December 11th 2012

Geo: 5.00339, -51.8665Today the ship moored off Devil's Island, which belongs to French Guiana. For those of you who have read the book or seen the film "Papillon", you will know that this was once a French penal colony. There are 3 islands in the archipelago, since renamed the Iles du Salut or Islands of Salvation. We were tendered to the largest island and from the landing stage there is a pathway first made by the original prisoners. It goes all the way around the island and there are paths and steps up to the summit which now houses a small hotel with restaurant and bar. The building was once the administrative quarters of the prison. On the lowest path we came across some lovely little monkeys. There are capuchins and squirrel monkeys on the island ... read more

South America » Brazil December 8th 2012

Geo: -2.62835, -56.7365I would have quite liked to walk around Parentins in Brazil but the temperature of 34 degrees with very high humidity put us off. We were tendered ashore for a Boi Bumba show. This is a mini equivalent of the carnival which happens every year and is the second largest after Rio. It was very loud mostly due to drums and singing but it was very colourful with great costumes and sets and really gave us an idea of the carnival atmosphere. I didn't get really good photos thanks to an American sitting in front of me who stood up to take photos every time there was a good moment. He didn't take a quick photo either but stood there for a minute each time obviously oblivious to the fact that people behind him ... read more
