Geo: 54.5973, -5.93019The report from the Captain was that despite an overnight stay in Belfast, we would still run into the gale winds which have not passed southwards as fast as he had hoped. In order to reach Iceland in time we had to leave Belfast at 2pm and go as fast as possible. When the storm hits it is going to slow us down so do not know when we will reach Iceland. Having missed out on a stop at Stornoway we do not want to miss out on Iceland too.As the ship was in port, the singers and dancers who put on a wonderful Abba show did not have a problem with a rocking ship. Brilliant songs which always bring back happy memories. We took the shuttle bus into Belfast city centre as our original ... read more

Geo: 54.5973, -5.93019As we were leaving Dublin and sailing up to Belfast, the Captain came over the tannoy system to tell us that there was a huge area of low pressure coming down from Iceland and this heralded a severe gale and force 10 winds. He therefore took the decision to get to Belfast and stay overnight to wait out the storm which meant our trip to Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis was cancelled. It was a shame that we were to miss out the Scottish island as we had never been to it before but being tossed about in gale force winds in order to do it was not an option. The Captain reckoned we would not have been able to moor up there. So today we are moored up in Belfast and it is ... read more

Europe » Ireland » County Dublin » Dublin September 14th 2013

Geo: 53.3441, -6.26749Our first Formal night on board happened while we were sailing away from England, around Land's End and up the Irish Channel to Dublin. Pre-dinner drinks at the Captains welcome party followed by dinner at which we were treated to an excellent rendition of the Drinking song from La Traviata by the ship's singers. After dinner we attended a piano recital by the virtuoso pianist David Schofield who was excellent. This morning lo and behold the sun was shining over Dublin. Off we went into town via the ship's shuttle bus. Our main cultural event was the National Gallery of Ireland, a large modern building with a very unassuming entrance, lots of interior space but only a few galleries. However these contained a comprehensive collection of European and Irish art but not too much so ... read more

Geo: 50.156, -5.07108Our good friend Mel kindly came with us to Southampton so that he could drive our car back. We boarded the Silver Whisper and were just in time for a late lunch. It took ages to unpack as we have brought more luggage than we would normally because the weather is going to be so variable. Prior to sailing we had the inevitable safety procedure, donning our life belts and going to the muster station. At least Silversea do this seriously unlike some other cruise firms we could mention! We finally got to meet our butler- Chan- and got the champagne delivered. We had expected a bottle in our suite but no- quell horreur-. However all was quickly corrected. We had a quick rendezvous on the pool deck for sail away and met a few ... read more

Europe » France June 16th 2013

Geo: 48.2975, 4.0748Driving through France is an easier affair than through Italy. The roads are better and we have a gizmo on the car windscreen which automatically raises the barrier at the Peage so we don't have to faff around with tickets and money. Also we were able to stop at a lovely Aire at which to have our picnic. We found a nice table with a hut like roof to shade us from what was still a hot sun- the last we should see for some time. The address of the hotel was 2 Rue de la Paix. When we arrived at the address all we could see was a high wall with a locked metal door and same with the garage door just further down. It did not look very promising until I pressed the ... read more

Europe » Italy June 15th 2013

Geo: 45.7369, 7.31452Sadly we had to leave our friends and start making our way home from Tuscany heading North on the motorway. Unfortunately there just aren't the picnic places in Italy like they have in France. Eventually we had to pull into a service station and spread our ground sheet on a grassy area in order to eat our picnic lunch. Later that afternoon we turned off into the town of Aosta which is nestled beneath the snow capped mountains near Mont Blanc. We were unaware that our sat nav was trying to send us directly through the middle of the pedestrianized area. Eventually when we were lost a cyclist told us we were not supposed to be there and he kindly cycled in front and got us out. We had to phone the hotel to ... read more

Geo: 43.3892, 11.3855Not wanting to drive too far and yet wanting to go somewhere different, we saw an ad for the Parco Sculture del Chianti near Vagliagli on a leaflet in the villa. It was surprisingly easy to find and the lovely old Italian gentleman on the gate was delighted that he could record an Irishman, a Canadian and two English on his visitor records. He told us all about the setting up of the park a few years ago and about some of the pieces of sculpture we would come across. Then for 7 euros each off we set not seeing any other visitors until we came out again. It was great fun coming across a sculpture and guessing what it was called. After our tour we also called in at a fabulous art gallery down ... read more

Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Pienza June 12th 2013

Geo: 43.0789, 11.6789Pienza, is a town which was totally redesigned by Pope Pius the 2nd, who came from there. He certainly knew what he was doing as this town is a delight to walk through. However it is popular which means parking is difficult in such a small place. Luckily we found that by driving out down the main road there is free parking only 10 minutes walk down the hill. The town is entered through the archway in the old city wall and really comprises of one main narrow pedestrian street with lots of lovely shops particularly cheese and wine stores. The church has several quite nice altar pieces but as it has been built on the very edge of the hill it has started to crack as the earth below has moved. How long ... read more

Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Florence June 11th 2013

Geo: 43.7687, 11.2569Florence is a city that benefits from a 4 day stay during which time you can really immerse yourself in all the glorious renaissance stuff it has to offer. We had the one day to enjoy it but having been before we did not mind especially as it was a sunny day. I love the Piazza della Signoria, where the statue of David by Michelangelo stands. It is a very good copy however and you need to go to the Accademia to see the original. There is also the wonderful bronze statue of Perseus and Medusa by Cellini. It is told that when he was making it he was running out of metal so he rushed around the house collecting bronze plates and anything he could find to literally throw into the melting pot. ... read more

Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Siena June 10th 2013

Geo: 43.3187, 11.3305The day started off partly cloudy but then the sun came out by the time we drove to Siena. The city was very busy and initially we had trouble trying to find a parking place. In the end we parked in the football stadium which is only a short walk from the centre. I love the narrow streets of Siena lined with lovely shops. Our first stop was the Duomo, which has lovely frescoes, altars , chapels and marble floors as well as a beautiful library. We had bought the ticket which also took us into the Crypt which was only discovered during excavations in 2003. There are portions of frescoes which has never been seen before in a huge area below the cathedral. It went down a long way and looked as though ... read more
