Europe » Croatia » Dalmatia » Dubrovnik September 28th 2011

Geo: 42.6537, 18.0948 The ship moored up in the morning at Dubrovnic so after a hearty breakfast we were tendered over to the old harbour just outside the city walls. It was a very hot sunny day and the place was absolutely packed with tourists and groups of people being shown around. The last time we had been in April it rained and there were fewer people. However we paid the fee of 70Kuna which is about 10 euros each to go onto the city wall. It is worth doing as there are very good views of the city and the islands around. It was a pity that there were so many people also walking around it. Normally it would take about 2 hours to go around the whole thing but after going half way we ... read more

Europe » Italy » Veneto » Venice September 24th 2011

Geo: 45.4345, 12.3384We have been to Venice many times in the past but it is always a delight to return. This time we stayed at the Bauer Hotel just off San Marco square. The entrance is impressive and a buffet breakfast on the terrace overlooking the Grand Canal in warm sunny weather is very pleasant. However the rooms were dark as we had no view and drinks and food were extortionately expensive. There again Venice is always expensive in the tourist areas, whereas if you walk down the side streets away from the crowds much cheaper places can be found. There is a bar in the square outside the Arsenale which is a sunny spot and the beers are reasonably priced. We had lunch in our favourite restaurant, the Al Vecio Portal, which has a lovely ... read more

Geo: 51.8274, -10.172Flew Air Lingus to Cork and picked up a hire car from Dooleys car hire at the airport with no trouble. It takes 2 and a half hours to drive to Waterville mainly because of single roads rather than distance. Checked in at the Butler's Arms hotel and stayed in a suite with a sea view. Well worth the extra to be able to sit in the window and watch the world go by. A tea and coffee making set is available on request and the staff are very friendly and helpful. We ate in the restaurant on our first night and had very good food served by a lovely old fashioned waitress called Mary Joe. Breakfast in the hotel was superbly served and all the food was delicious. Also ate at the Smuggler's ... read more

Geo: -0.229854, -78.5249It was sad to leave the Celebrity Expedition cruise ship as the voyage had been so fantastic and we had made lots of new friends. The transfers back to the Marriott were handled superbly. We didnt see our luggage from leaving the ship on the zodiac for the last time, flying from Baltra to Quito and then being bussed to the Marriott where our luggage was delivered to our room. Another trip had been arranged, this time to a local Artisan market where we bought a few souvenirs . There are lots of stalls and for a change they were selling different stuff from the usual tourist tack at reasonable prices especially if you haggled with the price, which was expected. After this we were taken to a more exclusive gallery,Galeria Latina, where we ... read more

Geo: -0.229854, -78.5249The flight from London via Madrid was long enough especially as we were diverted due to some miltary activity in Colombia. However landing in Quito is difficult at the best of times as it is very high and frequently has bad weather. Our flight was diverted to Guanquil because of the fog so we had to be put up in the Hilton overnight which was fine except that we had to fly again in the morning to finally get to Quito. Taxis are cheap and frequent and the currency is American dollars. The Marriott hotel is very pleasant and in easy reach of the sights. Having missed the morning city tour, we joined our group at the restaurant for an excellent lunch at the Carmine restaurant. In the afternoon we joined the tour for a ... read more

Geo: 13.1651, -16.8091The Denton Bridge spans the Coco River and connects the capital Banjul to the rest of the mainland. It is from here that the boat trips set off, outwards for those who want to fish or up river for those like us who wanted tranquillity. The Chef comes out to greet us and we clamber aboard our pirogue and meet the Captain and his helper. There are not many boats around as it is already 11.30am and most have left but we do not like early starts on holiday! It is high tide as the boat meanders through the Mangrove trees and it is also very quiet. There is not much to see apart from the Mangroves stretching mile after mile so apart from waving to the odd passing boat we relax on top ... read more

Geo: 13.4531, -16.5775GAMBIA 1Guaranteed sunshine, balmy heat both day and night and accessible from the UK via a 6 hour flight. The main reasons people say why they keep coming back to the Gambia. But then they add "of course the people are also so nice and friendly, the food is good and the place is safe and the prices are so much cheaper than the Euro zone." All true as we were to find out. Our hotel is the Coco Ocean recently built and one of the better hotels along the Atlantic coast. We have a villa with large bathroom, simply furnished but with minibar, complimentary tea and coffee and a large private terrace with two sun loungers, 2 long settees & 2 tables. Asia » Thailand » Central Thailand » Bangkok November 9th 2010

Geo: 13.7308, 100.521We had read about the really heavy rainy season and flooding north of Bangkok so decided to take a boat up the river and off the canal to have a look for ourselves. The level of the River of Kings was certainly high and even the Oriental had some protective sandbags between the railings just in case. Along the canals further up we saw very high water levels with the poor houses flooded. All the government buildings had flood walls along the edge of the river to keep them dry but even so there was evidence that all the walls had been breached at some time. We saw a lady curled up on her chair on her flooded front porch with water swishing round the chair legs. Water was seen in peoples front kitchens ... read more

Geo: 3.12433, 101.684The ship disembarked at Singapore but there was still a short coach ride to the cruise terminal. From here it is a short taxi ride to the Railway station where we purchased tickets for Kuala Lumpur. We had 3 hours before the 1pm train so after leaving the luggage (10 singapore dollars- nothing cheap here), we headed to the riverside for a beer as the weather was sunny but still very hot and humid. After a short walk along the riverside we came across the Red House Seafood restaurant so decided to have an early lunch not knowing what was available on the train. If you ever go there get one small bowl of seafood noodles and share as the portions are huge. One small hot and sour soup would have fed four and ... read more

Geo: 1.54907, 110.344A drive up into the mountains from Kuching brought us to the Anah Rais Longhouse in which the Bidayuh tribe live. I thought that this was going to be a real tourist trap with loads of souvenirs for sale and not the genuine thing. However, there were no souvenirs for sale and these were ordinary people living their lives in small houses lining either side of a long bamboo platform built on stilts. The chickens were on the ground underneath and the one story houses on the platform where built of a combination of wood and corrugated iron roofing. The long bamboo poles which were lashed together were quite difficult to walk along. Our guide showed us into a really old original dwelling which has several skulls in a basket hanging in the centre. ... read more
