Europe » Italy » Sicily » Palermo September 3rd 2010

Geo: 38.1157, 13.3612My daughter Helen & husband Wildy were over from Australia so we decided to go somewhere we had never been before. Europe had pretty much been covered but no one had been to Sicily so we decided to try it. The flight to Catania by BA was an early one but was on time and helped by a glass of champagne or two to celebrate the trip. It was rainy and cloudy on arrival but still very warm. We collected the hire car after having to ask at info where the hire car desks were as it wasn't that obvious. However we were glad that we had used a little known company (Sixt) as there was no queue and we quickly got our little Mercedes. Don't even think of getting a big car here. ... read more

Europe » Italy » Veneto » Venice April 21st 2010

Geo: 45.4345, 12.3384This should have been the day we were due to fly home but no flights thanks to the ash cloud. The hotel we were in doubled their prices and they werent too friendly so we checked out and moved only 50 yards down the street to the Hotel San Moise which was 2 star at 100 euros per night for a double b&b and was on a side canal. The rooms were very Venetian with red walls and heavy drapes but we preferred it to the previous hotel. Meanwhile lots of phone calls were being made to rebook flights and try and find alternative routes home. All the alternatives were either extremely tedious with lots of changes or very expensive so we decided to sit it out and see what came up.The next mission ... read more

Europe » Italy » Veneto » Venice April 16th 2010

Geo: 45.4345, 12.3384The shipped docked in Venice and we took a water taxi to the Hotel Kette, which is conveniently situated close to St.Mark's square. The Iceland volcano had erupted and there were no flights across Europe but we knew we had 2 nights already booked at this hotel so were no concerned. It was a lovely day so we quickly dumped our stuff and walked to St Marks. The square was heaving and there was a long queue for the church so we walked along the lagoon to the Arsenale where is is always more peaceful and there is a quiet square where you can sit outside and enjoy a beer. We had lunch at the Al Vechio Portal which is close by and on a street away from the lagoon. The decor was of ... read more

Europe » Croatia » Dalmatia » Split April 15th 2010

Geo: 43.5127, 16.4424The town of Split is built upon the remains of Diocletians Palace. The original Palace built by Diocletian for his retirement was huge with incredibly thick walls and large basements. Today you can walk around the remaining basement halls and see the thickness of the walls and foundations. There are lots of market stalls within the walls lining the way to the stairs up from the foundations. The Cathedral of St.Duje the patron saint is worth a visit but if you want to go up the tower or to the Treasury or crypt there is a charge of several more Kuna. We went round the local art gallery which has some renaissance but mostly wierd modern art so only go if you are a real art fan. There were plenty of outside market stalls selling ... read more

Europe » Croatia » Dalmatia » Dubrovnik April 14th 2010

Geo: 42.6537, 18.0948We caught the shuttle bus from the pier to Pile Square just outside the impressive city walls which run all around the city. Once through the old gate you are in a clean attractive medieval street paved with marble and lined with lovely old buildings. The main thoroughfare is the Stradun, which has the Onofriou Fountain at its top end. This is no longer working but is still a nice piece of architecture. We paid a few Kuna to get in the Baptistery of St John but this is only one small Roman room containing one statue of St.John. The Old Pharmacy and the Cloisters are worth a visit as they contain some good Renaissance art and the 3 cathedrals are easy to pop into in a stroll around the streets as it is ... read more

Europe » Greece April 12th 2010

Geo: 36.4044, 25.3959Santorini in a volcanic island rising vertically from the sea with spectacular views. The ship couldnt get near the shore so we had to be tendered in on smaller boats. From the bottom of the small dock we had the choice of going up the steep hill by donkey or by cable car. We chose the latter as it seems cruel to laden donkeys with our large heavy persons. At least photos can be taken from the cable car. Unfortunately the museums and churches were all closed, whether this was because it was a Monday or whether it was too early in the season I dont know. The back of the town is not pretty but is where you need to go to hire cars if you want to travel round the island. At ... read more

Europe » Greece April 11th 2010

Geo: 37.4438, 25.353After docking we had to catch the shuttle bus into town as it was a long way from the ship to the centre. Once there the town is easy to walk around, narrow streets through whitewashed buildings. The balconies and stairs outside the buildings are colourful. There are plenty of shops both souvenir and designer stuff. I bought a pair of sandals as I had developed a blister walking up and down narrow streets in flip flops. It is a very windy place with windmills on the hill. Even though the sun was out the wind made it quite cool, but we had to sit and have a beer outside. There is a nice little harbour and we came across a pink pelican sunning itself and another preening itself and not worried about our presence. ... read more

Middle East » Turkey April 10th 2010

Geo: 37.96, 27.35The shipped docked at Kusadasi on the Turkish coast. Once on land we hopped in a local taxi which took us to Ephesus. Our driver dropped us at the top of the city and we walked down through it and he met us at the other end. Some do it the other way but why walk uphill? There are a multitude of stalls at either end selling souvenirs and "genuine" fake watches! Ephesus is a massive well preserved city and it is impressive to walk along the original streets and see the Celsus library (135 BC), The Grand theatre (3AD), where St Paul preached and even the communal loos! Sitting on the loo is an obvious photo call for some! It is extra to see the recently restored terrace houses and we didnt go ... read more

Europe » Greece April 9th 2010

Geo: 36.4395, 28.2156The ship docked early and we went off as soon as we could. There were few people around and I dont know whether this was because of the recession or because it was early in the season. The sun was out so strolling around the shops with no crowds was a pleasure. I bought a lovely handbag for only 10 euros. We also walked down the medieval streets of the Knights of St.John of Jerusalem and visited the archaeological museum , which is small but contains some lovely statues. In the afternoon we walked to the nearby marina and old city walls and bought shells from boats loaded with really interesting shells and sponges. We didnt have time to travel out of the town but apparantly Lindos is worth a visit.... read more

Europe » Greece April 8th 2010

Geo: 37.1165, 26.3342Nothing nicer than a day relaxing at sea. Activities included doing the daily trivia quiz which had to be handed in and also attending the Team Trivia for which we got up a good team and won overall by the end. It was also a good way to meet people. As it was sunny we sat and read on our balcony or on the top deck. I also attended a lecture on photography. All the activities are arranged around breakfast lunch and dinner, which aboard a Silversea cruise are excellent. We attended a couple of the evening shows but they were very similar to ones we had seen before so we spent most of our time socialising in the bar where we could also have a bit of a dance.... read more
