Geo: 28.1204, 85.5945After an Early rise, I grabbed breakfast and waited for the others till we left at 9am. The day started cloudy, far from the amazing weather we have had the whole time. It was a freezing morning, one of the coldest I can think of on the whole trek. I'm sick of my water bottles freezing to ice. My toes were freezing and numb as usual, but once we started walking they warmed up.It was all downhill from Thukla to Periche, walking down one small valley and merging into a massive valley ahead. The landscape looked amazing with the snow scattered throughout. But the cloud was forming thicker and you could tell it was going to snow. At some point halfway down, the dog that followed us up from Thukla to Lobuche had joined us ... read more

Geo: 28.1543, 85.5615Morning came and i had slept in the latest since the whole trek, 6:30am, and i was feeling good. 10 hours of sleep and the headache and nausea were gone and i was relieved to be able to go to Everest Base Camp. So i strolled into the dining hall and grabbed some much needed food. We were in for a long day, Gorak Shep to Base Camp, about 5-6 hrs, and back then continuing back down to Thukla, another 4 hrs. So with semi dry boots, we set off to Everest Base Camp. The start of the trek is pretty flat but the rest of the way is continuously up and downhill. At the start, Chelsey had breathing difficulties and almost headed back, but thankfully she pressed on, taking her time to rest. She ... read more

Geo: 28.0914, 85.556I woke around 5am and immediately looked outside to see if the weather was clear. I couldn't see much as the windows were frosted, so i waited till sunrise to see if the weather was clear. There was bright blue sky and we were all relieved and were definitely heading to Gorak Shep. The whole landscape was covered in snow ranging from a couple of inches to probably 10 inches. After breakfast we all got ready and excited. The start of the trek is relatively flat, walking along the valley and the side of the Khumbu Glacier. As i thought, the snow made the landscape and the scenery more beautiful. We were originally told that it would take 2 1/2 hours to Gorak Shep, but it took us an hour more. The snow made it harder and ... read more

Geo: 28.1495, 85.5615Once again i had another on and off night with sleep, was up at 4:30 and lay awake till breakfast. I peered through my window and it was completely frosted over and i could tell the weather wasn't good. After closer inspection it was and had been snowing all night. We grabbed breakfast at about 7:30 when Krishna said we wouldn't be able to trek today because of the snow and weather. We were pretty bummed but there was nothing that we could do. But I was thankful for an acclimatisation day. Dustin seemed confident that the snow and weather would clear up by midday and we would be on our way o Kala Pathar in no time. Well that never happened. It snowed the whole day, non stop with no sign of clearing and ... read more

Asia » Nepal » Lobuche February 8th 2010

Geo: 28.1204, 85.4462I had a rather difficult and interrupted sleep, I woke at 12 and fell back asleep at 3 and was up at 5:30 where I lay awake till breakfast. We were due to trek to Lobuche, about 5 hours away and 500m higher in altitude. This is where most people feel the affects of altitude so I knew I would have a few restless nights ahead for me.We packed our gear and had a hearty breakfast, oats as usual, and hit the steep hill towards the stupa. We knew because of the increase in altitude that we would have to take it slow and take our time. Once we got to the top it was mostly flat, following the mountainside where you can pass above Periche in the wide valley below. You stop and ... read more

Geo: 28.1011, 85.3748I was warm thorughout the night, but when it came to going to the toilet, it was a mission. The toilet was in the other building about 15m from where my room was. I had to go through about 5 doors, three in the first building, walk outside and then through another 2 doors. It's a bother, especially if you can't hold it in.I was up at about 5:30 but lay in bed for 2 hours before having an "illegal" breakfast. At the accommodation, signs are posted saying that if you bring food in or eat other food at the guesthouse then they will charge you 2000rs. It started in Namche at 700rs then up to 1000rs in Tengbouche and now 2000rs in Dingbouche. So the prices increases the higher you get. I know it's helping ... read more

Geo: 28.1107, 85.589I woke up around 6am to some fierce wind outside and i was feeling a cold breeze on my neck, so i checked the windows and saw one was open, i though "bloody hell" that was probably open all night. The older Canadian couple had told us that it was -3C in their room. But i did manage to have a descent nights sleep. I got out of bed and walked to the monastery, but being 7am nothing was open yet so i went for a walk around the small village which was like a ghost town cause everything was closed due to off season. I ran into Jasper and we took a short walk to warm ourselves up before breakfast. All of us tucked into some porridge and warmed ourselves up by the fire, ... read more

Geo: 28.1204, 85.4901I was in bed by 7:30 where Radek was still in bed. But going to bred early meant that i woke early, 4:30 in fact. But it was to the sound of Radek's heavy breathing, i thought he was going to have a heart attack and he was still in bad shape by the time the sun rose. I knew there was no way that he was going to continue. He said that he had a cold and cough and that climbing in altitude didn't help. We were told that it was -15C the night we camped. We went for breakfast but Radek didn't manage to eat anything. Originally i was thinking about going back to Kathmandu with Radek but Chelsey and Dustin were still going up so i decided to go with them. I ... read more

Geo: 28.1204, 85.5231After a horrible night of camping in the freezing cold, Radek was feeling it worse than i was, he wasn't feeling hungry and was very tired. My toes were frozen, so i took a walk up the hill to thenational park information center to warm myself up. When i got back we packed the gear up and went into the restaurant for some breakfast.Oats seem to be they way to go, i seem to last longer during the day. We filled our bottles up with water and added the iodine and then we were off, to Tengbouche, four hours away. The trail follows the contours of the hills with magnificent views of the mountain range allthe way and once again it was a beautiful and clear crisp morning. The trail starts off easy, on a ... read more

Geo: 28.0817, 85.4791The first mistake i realized as i had got to Namche was under-estimating the prices here for food and water and under-estimating that amount of money i would need on the whole trek. Water is 100rs minimum and gets more expensive the higher you go, up to 300rs. Back in Kathmandu i had bought two one liter bottles for 10rs each. So with no ATM's available, I'm really going to have to budget and conserve. The second mistake was not thinking about anti-altitude sickness pills (Diamox) or buying Iodine for water purification, it was pretty stupid of us to both forget and not prepare for this. The third mistake was trekking two days worth in one day. Chelsey and Dustin's porter, Krishna, said it was a bad idea as we jumped from 1800 meters ... read more
