Europe » Czech Republic March 25th 2011

Geo: 48.7763, 14.3189Believe it or not, there is more to the Czech Republic than Prague. I love to see other areas of any country and I am fortunate to be able to spend more time in one country. Besides I would rather that than travel to 10 different capital cities or main cities in Europe. So going a bit off the beaten track is what I strive for, and it is possible in Europe, you just might need to do a little research first.I remember years ago watching a show on MTV called "backpackers", it was about three Australians on a European trip. On one of the episodes they were in the Czech Republic and they went to this church decorated with thousands of bones. Ever since this episode that place has always been in the back ... read more

Geo: 50.0878, 14.4205Arrival in to Prague's hlanvi nadrazi took me by surprise. I could cope with some German words before, but now I found myself in a city with limited English than I had thought. Usually I am good at getting my bearings and direction straight away, but for some reason I stood at the station confused and disoriented. After probably a good fifteen minutes I finally found the underground, bought a ticket and was on my way to the hostel.A quick tip for Prague. When you get money out at the ATM, make sure you get notes of 200 denomination, eg 600 or 800. Don't get 1000 Krona out, because the ATM will give you a 1000 krona note. This can be a problem when you want to purchase things of a small amount. Shops ... read more

Geo: 50.0924, 8.68195This Blog continues from my previous one. I was still staying in Witten, which ended up being four nights instead of two. Partly because I took a day trip to Koln, or Cologne. The previous night we had checked the cost at 26 euro, I got the right ticket but when I was on the train the conductor said I had the wrong ticket and slapped me with a on the spot 40 euro fee. I went to the ticket office in Koln and they said I had the right ticket and couldn't understand why I was charged 40 euro. I was able to get my money back but had to send the documents in and they would transfer the money back in to my account. And yet I still see no money return, dodgy ... read more

Europe » Germany » Berlin March 8th 2011

Geo: 52.5235, 13.4115Berlin, a city with so much history and life. I found that I was taking more photos of the people and the art of berlin than I did of the buildings. It's a shame that the war has destroyed most of these German cities but Berlin has it's these elements to compensate.I arrived into Berlin from Hamburg, I met with Liisa, a friend I had met in Australia the previous year. I was to be crashing at her place near the trendy and lively eastern suburb of Friedrichshain.Unfortunately I was fairly sick at this point so the following days were taken slowly and with ease as we visited the Turkish area of Kreuzburg. Along the way we got a kebab for 2euro. Berlin is a lot cheaper compared to other German cities. We also ... read more

Europe » Germany » Hamburg March 8th 2011

Geo: 53.5534, 9.9922Germany! First stop was Mummelmannsburg. Ok, I will make it easier for you, Hamburg.I flew in to Hamburg with limited sleep and a horrible cold. Not the best way to start a trip. After taking the train in to the Hauptbahnhof, I was greeted by a friend I met in Australia last year.I was sleeping at her place, but with a catch, a 15min underground train trip to the outskirts of the city to the suburb of Mummelmannsburg, which roughly translates in to "Bunny Hill".Being sick sucks, so I wasn't in an energetic state. But with the limited time I couldn't let it stop me from seeing this nice city.It was cloudy when I landed but as soon as we got in to the city it cleared up and was a beautiful blue sky ... read more

Geo: 51.2365, -0.570305What do I get up to when I am based in Guildford?, being such a small town you probably would think not much, but I have been up to quite a lot in between my other European travels.I arrived here in mid January and staying and spending time with Anna. The first major event which I have been looking forward to for the last 15 years was seeing a soccer, oh sorry; Football, match, not necessarily an English Premier League game but to watch my favorite team who I have supported since a young teen, Leeds United. The fixture and timing was perfect to see Portsmouth Vs Leeds Utd as Portsmouth was only an hour away by bus and a couple of my friends are Portsmouth supporters so the rivalry was perfect too. So I ... read more

Europe » Italy » Campania » Capri February 3rd 2011

Geo: 40.5509, 14.2429To continue the theme I have decided to include the Amalfi Coast and Capri Island together as one blog. Capri was the first stop, I had decided to go on the Friday as there would be less tourists. The ferry departed from Naples and took about 1 hour.30 minutes, the slow one that is, it's cheaper.I was there for the whole day and I loved it, the weather was perfect and warm.I walked along the main road up to the town, there is a nice lookout. On the other side of the island is another lookout with beautiful view out in to the Mediterranean Sea. From there you can loop back around to the town by the twisty walkway of Via Krupp. On a sunny day this is spectacular with the clear blue and aqua ... read more

Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Florence February 2nd 2011

Geo: 43.7687, 11.2569Rome was conquered and now it was time to head to Florence via Pisa. Ah the Leaning Tower of Pisa, another contrast with India is that you go to this town or city to see an amazing piece of architecture but that's all there is, like Agra and the Taj Mahal. So there isn't any point in hanging around for more than a couple of hours. In our hungover state we were glad we weren't in for a day of walking, we just had to sit back and let the trains do the work. We took the cheaper train which takes longer but if you are on a budget then it's very handy. From Pisa we took the train again for less than an hour to Florence, it was about 6pm when we arrived and the ... read more

Europe » Italy » Lazio » Rome February 2nd 2011

Geo: 41.8955, 12.4823How often would compare Rome with the country India? Probably never, and don't worry it's not, but when we landed in Rome and checked in to the hostel, we both assimilated it with India. Why you might ask, well, we picked a fairly cheap hostel, the rooms, the marble steps to the entrance, the smell from the toilets, at this point also the condition of the bathroom, and even the person who checked us in all reminded us of India. Strange.Oh and FYI they now charge an extra 2 euro on top of the accommodation price, this is for any low budget accommodation.Anyway I can say now that Rome is a great city. Long story short we spent 3 days which was a good amount of time to see most of it.You probably already ... read more

North America » Canada » Ontario » Toronto January 5th 2011

Geo: 43.6485, -79.3854Although I have only spent 1 week and probably seen about 0.00000000001 percent of the country, I think Canada is a pretty cool country; I can't wait to go back.I thought the United States was Ok, but I liked the feel of Canada better. The best analogy to compare the two (well only for people who have been to India and Nepal would be able to relate to this) is that the USA is India and Canada is Nepal; being in the USA means a more busier country, chaos and more people, granted I have only been to New York; And Canada is Nepal; more isolated, friendlier people and surrounded with nature and mountains to escape to. An early departure from New York was needed to time my arrival in to Toronto for Jamie ... read more
