Geo: 10.6053, 103.531Cambodia! The last country on the list and loop. We took a bus from Ho Chi Minh to Phnom Phenh which ended up being delayed for a couple of hours, we jumped on a pretty nice bus but were the only foreigners on board. We got through the border with no problems and strolled in to Phnom Phenh by the close of day. We grabbed a hotel just up the road from the bus station as we decided to head to Sihanoukville the following day as we would return to Phnom Penh anyway. The room wasn't the best but it was cheap to what we have been paying for over the last month in Vietnam. I went to get money from the ATM and was issued U.S dollar bills and we quickly learned that U.S ... read more

Geo: 10.9331, 108.283Wow, after three days in Mui Ne, it was enough to say that so far it is one of my favourite places on this trip so far. The area is beautiful, beaches, sand dunes and water-sports. A place where you could easily spend over a week relaxing and enjoying sights. We took a four hour bus from Dalat and arrived at midday and settled in to a guesthouse for $8 per night which was great as we were expecting to pay at least $15 as Mui Ne has a lot of fancy hotels and resorts. We settled in and went straight for the beach. Our accommodation walks out on to the beach. Mui Ne beach is where the tourists stay, Mui Ne town is about 5 km away. The beach has many places for accommodation and ... read more

Geo: 11.7501, 108.377So far everywhere we have been in Vietnam has been amazing and we were only half way down the country. Unfortunately Anna had caught the flu and we didn't manage to see much of Hoi An and after the overnight bus to Nha Trang, it was my turn to catch the flu.We arrived pretty early in to Nha Trang which seemed like a really nice place as we drove along the beach front and even at 5.30 am the streets and beach were packed full of locals taking an early morning stroll, doing some exercise classes or taking a swim. It's amazing in Vietnam how early people get up and start the day, whole cities are in full swing by 7am.We got in to our room and immediately hit the sack till about 10am. ... read more

Geo: 16.4635, 107.585After spending a low key day in Hanoi and buying our open bus ticket we were on the road in an overnight bus to Hue. Before we had been liaising with couchsufers in Vietnam to see if we were able to spend a day working with some locals in the rice fields, but we were a few weeks to late and all the fields had been cultivated, a bit of a bummer, I was really looking forward to that experience, nevermind. The trip took around 12 hours and we arrived in a more quieter and low key town compared to the loud and chaotic area of the Old Quarter in Hanoi. We checked in to our hotel and then set about thinking of what we wanted to see and do. We spent the first half ... read more

Geo: 20.9063, 107.082One of the most Iconic places in South East Asia are the limestone pillars of Halong Bay, A must see when in the area. To get there we had to pass through the crazy city of Hanoi first. Hanoi is just another big, busy city and we had no interest in staying there for more than we had to. We took a 12 hour bus ride from Sapa to Hanoi during the day which was also another good way to relax after the Mount Fansipan trek. We took a taxi to the old quarter and spent a while trying to find some cheap accommodation, but to find accommodation for less than $15 was a challenge, especially when both hostels were booked out. We ended up getting in to one of the hostels but we ... read more

Geo: 22.3945, 104.056Country number three and a big change in pace from a population of 7 million in Laos to 87 million in Vietnam. We were looking forward to exploring Vietnam and what better way to start off than from the north west. We crossed the border three days after we had planned from the start of our visa. The bus got us to the border and the first thing I did was "mark my territory" on Vietnamese soil, unintentionally of course, then we continued to the first major town of Dien Bien Phu. We had to stay one night in Dien Bien Phu for the 6am bus direct to Sapa. We would have liked to do the north west loop by bike, but starting in Dien Bien Phu would have mean't a bit of backtracking ... read more

Geo: 19.4811, 103.13Phonsovans Plain of Jars may not be as well known as Stone Henge, but the same mystery applies. It's not really understood how they got there and what the were used for. We got to Phonsavan from Don Det at the very bottom of Laos. The whole trip took 32 hours by catching a longtail boat to the mainland, mini van to Pakse, waiting in Pakse for 6 hours, an overnight bus with minimal sleep to Vientiane, transfer from the southern bus terminal to the northern terminal and then straight away catching a 10 hour local bus on bumpy, dusty, noisy and windy roads. It was very tiring!, although looking back it wasn't really worth the detour.Phonsavan wasn't really a nice town in terms of attractiveness and friendliness with more of a police presence, but ... read more

Geo: 14.116, 105.8564000 Islands, a natural phenomena where the Mekong river widens from the standard size of a few hundred meters to it's widest point of 12km and length of about 45km down the very bottom of Laos. There's no prizes for guessing why it's called 4000 Islands aka Si Phan Don.There are only three main islands that are accessible to the tourists, Don Khong, the biggest island which is usually bypassed for the smaller islands of Don Det and Don Khon which are further south. We set of by mini van from Pakse for the big island where we ran in to familiar faces. In a country like Laos, Vietnam and even Thailand where there is basically one main road linking all the main places together, it's not hard to keep running in to people going ... read more

Geo: 15.1332, 105.783The town of Pakse doesn't hold much interest for the avid traveler but beyond it lies hidden gems of landscape and culture. We arrived and stayed in Vientiene for a total of 3 hours as we weren't really interested in a city. We just hung out at the internet place before being picked up for the bus south. We were the first to be picked up and it took about 30 min to pick a full tuk tuk worth of falang (Westener in Lao) and there we got our city tour. We arrived in to Pakse about 3 hours late due to our bus having some problem about 30 minutes after leaving Vientiene. The problem took 3 hours to fix and we finally got going. The sleeper bus was pretty good, much better than ... read more

Geo: 18.9401, 102.357Vang Vieng, a town that seems to have lost its soul and fallen in to a viscous cycle of a constant flow of drunken backpackers, but beyond this town lies beautiful landscape that offers heaps of activities such as the infamous tubing, rock climbing, trekking and kayaking etc.To get here, we hopped on a 6hr mini van ride through some amazing mountain and jungle scenery but on horrible road conditions with holes and rugged dirt sections, landslides are also commonly apparent. On arrival we found a nice guesthouse for a pretty cheap price that included everything including hot water, four baby puppies, television and a mountain view balcony for a partial sunset. We walked around town and found there was a day kayaking trip to Vientiane which immediately appealed to us and a great way ... read more
