Geo: -38.4909, 145.24Phillip Island makes for a good little day trip from Melbourne and if you have a car, it makes it a little easier to explore most of the island. There are quite a few things to do there that will keep any sort of person busy.Anna and I drove to Phillip Island on a quite cloudy morning with the aim of doing some walks and finishing the day off by seeing the Penguin Parade. Our first point of call was Cape Woolami, sticking out like a sore thumb on the South Eastern side of the island. It offers some nice walks that start along the beach with the fishermen and on top of the cliffs with the snails.Phillip Island is also known as a good surfing spot and there were a few out in ... read more

Geo: -37.8143, 144.963What a crazy few months it has been. After three years on the road it was finally time to settle down, to have a place of our own. It was going to be a different feel but we were looking forward to starting a proper life together. So many things have happened over the last few months that it has taken us a while to get to see some of Melbourne and it's surrounds. Somehow we managed to get a perfect apartment in Richmond only a few days after arriving back from out East Coast trip, but we were subletting and unfortunately caught within a few weeks of moving in and had to find another place. We were lucky enough to get another proper place in Richmond. Through out this fiasco we were both trying ... read more

Geo: -28.0023, 153.431The sad end to our campervan trip and our four and a half month odyssey through South East Asia, New Zealand and Australia was drawing to an end. Our final stop was Surfers Paradise and Brisbane. After a great time in Byron Bay we headed north towards Surfers Paradise. We were both quite tired so we parked in a small street which had access to the beach south of Surfers. Anna had a sleep while I caught up on some blogs and took a few pictures around the area. We had been told that it wasn't as safe to stay in Surfers, so we parked at the North Burleigh Life Savers Club where I went for a quick walk up to a lookout and then we cooked up the remaining food for dinner.Struggling for things ... read more

Geo: -28.6434, 153.612What is it that attracts people to Byron Bay? It's a small town with just a beach and at the most easterly point on mainland Australia, but yet is a backpackers mecca and also a holiday mecca. It's strange in my opinion but it's a place I like going to and especially when we were meeting James and Hayley and that we were going to be celebrating Valentines day and Anna's birthday as well.We drove up from Coffs Harbour with just a small stop at the big prawn in Ballina and Lennox Head and finally arrived into Byron Bay by 6pm where we met with James and Hayley who had rented an apartment. We were able to use their facilities which was really great and helpful and set about making a BBQ dinner where James ... read more

Geo: -31.4343, 152.908The sun arose for a great start to the day in Forster and so were the quality of waves at the main beach. We were pretty keen for a surf but spent the best part of the morning trying find someone who hires surf boards. The only guy who hires boards wasn't able to lend the boards for the day.So with a surf out of the question and yet still waiting for our first proper session we pressed onto Port Macquarie where there was bound to be more opportunities. After seeing pictures of a lookout near Port Macquarie, we were quite keen to see it for ourselves. It was called Laurieton Lookout and the views were magnificent in two different directions, one looking North to Port Macquarie and one looking South to Crowdy Head. We ... read more

Geo: -32.9264, 151.781Good old Newcastle, I have spent about 6 months in total there from my job, so I know it quite well, but there are still things I haven't seen or done and I was quite happy to be able to visit again, to see the old hostel that I called my second home.We left for Newcastle from Katoomba in a very foggy and rainy day; there was no point in sticking around so we headed towards Newcastle via putty road up to Singleton. It was a really nice road with some nice views; most of which were clouded over, but it also went through some windy roads and rocky landscapes. We arrived in to Newcastle by late afternoon and sneakily used the showers of the hostel I had previously stayed in. It was refreshing ... read more

Geo: -33.8671, 151.207CAMPERVAN ROAD TRIP!! The best way to get around Australia as the country is so friggen big and there is so much to see and do. Our trip was from Melbourne to Brisbane in 2.5 weeks, we had no real plan but we had to be in Byron Bay by a certain date. Our campervan pick was Hippie Campers, booked quite a few months in advance. We picked it up near Melbourne Airport and headed straight up the dry and yellow grassed Hume highway and Victorian landscape to Sydney. We were running late and we arrived in Tumut at the base of the snowy mountains around 10pm through some heavy and constant rain. With no real time to stick around we headed off early to Sydney and arrived around 2pm at our accommodation which was ... read more

Geo: -37.8143, 144.963It's been a while since I had spent more than a week in Melbourne since starting my NSW job, but the week Anna and I had before our campervan road trip to Brisbane was one full of action. After our day trip to the Great Ocean Road we had the privilege of attending Regan and Janelle's Australian Day Barbeque at their place, also where we are staying. The day was hot and it was great to catch-up with friends as well as enjoying a shrimp on the barbie, triple J's hottest 100 countdown and some backyard cricket. We also went out for my birthday drinks in Richmond, with a few attendees, it was a really nice night.I loved the way one drink was served in a paper bag giving the "homeless bum" feel.We also did some flat ... read more

Geo: -38.5424, 143.976Day two in Melbourne and straight in to the swing of things by doing a day trip down The Great Ocean Road to The Twelve Apostles. We arrived in to Melbourne early to a hot 35 degree day, a reminder of what I have missed over the last few years. It was definitely a shock to Anna, especially driving in a car with no working air conditioner. We caught up with Fernando, a friend of Anna's from Surrey University, for lunch and in no time we had organized a day trip down the Great Ocean Road. Our fine lodging was in Croyden at one of my best mates place, but at considerable distance to where most of the action is, although there are benefits to being out that way too.The following morning we picked up Fernando ... read more

Geo: -44.6698, 167.928Each day we hoped the weather would change, we had already had enough of the rain and we just wanted a little break in the weather, even for just a few hours and especially as we were headed straight up to MacKinnon Pass for some spectacular views. But alas we were not granted with such luck. The morning was cloudy with no rain, yet! We set off early again, we were the second group after a group of three old Japanese walkers, and we soon caught up to them just after the main ascent to the top. Rain had appeared here and there but the cloud still hovered low. We did manage a few views back down the valley which were quite amazing, but as we got to the top the cloud had completely covered ... read more
