Geo: -1.95325, 30.0587Rwanda, A country with an unfortunate past and it seems that that past might have an effect on peoples perception of the country. People may think that because of this past that it is a dangerous place to visit. I really like the country that has rapidly improved and looking to become a hub of Africa. It's a small country but it still has things to offer.Though in saying all of this, sure, the past does play with ones mind. It was only 19 years ago, and sitting next to or having a conversation with a Rwandan of that generation isn't the most assuring. How can you look past the fact that there is the possibility that this person has killed or in most cases lost a family member. How can you fully enjoy ... read more

Geo: -1.25418, 29.9928The Mountain Gorilla!!It's an incredible feeling when you see a species that is considered critically endangered. It's an incredible feeling to stand within 5 meters of a 220kg Silver-back who feels comfortable with our close presence. It's an incredible feeling to even have the opportunity to visit these amazing creatures. It's a surreal feeling, especially afterwards, the time goes too quick and you're left thinking if it was a dream and wishing you could have spent a whole day with them, if not more. Pictures don't do the experience justice but they will always remind you of the experience. It took a full day to get to our secluded accommodation on the outskirts of Bwindi National Park.We managed in the late day to get a car from Kabale to Rushaga which felt like we were ... read more

Geo: 0.18333, 30.0833Africa! A different continent, a different culture, a different landscape and a different experience. After quite a bit of time travelling in Asia, we were looking for a bit of change.Besides the North, Africa is most probably one of the least visited continents in the world, and it's understandable with some of the issues in some countries. That's what makes it so unfortunate because I believe that Africa has so much to offer. Those who step out of their comfort zone are rewarded with amazing opportunities that cannot be sought in any other place, once in a life time opportunities. We embarked on our 3 week trip, a little shorter than we are used to, Uganda and Rwanda.Anna's best friend is working one year in Rwanda, so there was no better excuse than to go and visit. Our ... read more

Geo: 45.8996, 6.12846So I finally got the chance to go further south of Paris. Annecy was beautiful!I love the mountains and the outdoors and this was the place to be.We rented a car from Geneva and headed south. I loved seeing the mountains rise up in the distance from a gorgeous lake. We walked all around Annecy and enjoyed all the small hidden lane-ways of the old town. We of course had to buy some cheese, baguette and saucisson for the next few days.We headed south along the edge of the lake to a small village called Talloires for a few nights, from here you get a more intimate and secluded perspective of the surrounding nature. The view from a nearby lookout is incredible. We were blessed with sunny weather for the whole time. We were celebrating ... read more

Geo: 52.3718, 4.53025Thankfully in Europe, all the countries are close together which makes it great for travelling, where as in Australia it takes hours just to get to another country. Holland was a perfect place for a "family" holiday and it was only about 5 hours by car from Northern France via Belgium (with it's hundreds of semi-trucks) before we reached our final destination of Centerparcs in Zandvoort.Centerparcs is a well known holiday park in Europe which comprises of hundreds of houses which include a swimming pool that is free to use with the stay. It also has other activities such as Go Karting, Bowling and Squash etc at a small cost.So we all hit the road in two cars to Zandvoort on the western coast. We looked at visiting Gent in Belgium, but by the time ... read more

Geo: 50.7644, 1.63106Alors, we were back in to familiar territory after a great two weeks in Bangladesh and a family holiday in Holland. It was even the more special because it signified for Anna being back with her family after one full year away.It also signified a new start, a start that for me has been absent for nearly 4 years.Arriving in France and staying with Anna's parents in Wimereux had been great. As we commenced our quest in to the real world, being there allowed us to get our affairs sorted without having to incur too many expenses. We have enjoyed a number of different activities over the stay, starting with a visit from Anna's Aunty and a evening with Anna's sister and her boyfriend where they cooked a special snack for us, Frog Legs!, they look ... read more

Geo: 52.3738, 4.89095Amsterdam exceeded my expectations, I really enjoyed the city and what it has to offer. There is much to see and do there if you can drag yourself away from the "cafe's".Waking up in the morning and seeing the cloudy and horrible weather didn't fill me with great pleasure, but in the end the weather had turned out perfectly sunny. It was amazing because the weather before and after our day trip to Amsterdam was wet, cold and rainy. We couldn't have timed it better. So we all jumped in to the car and ended up in central Amsterdam. With the limited time we had, we decided it would be the best to hire bikes from the central station. The biking culture in the Netherlands is insane, so many people on bikes, hundreds of bikes intertwining ... read more

Geo: 24.7418, 90.4037Visiting small villages and locals homes was again a highlight of our time in Bangladesh, and as it seems it is a big highlight for the people we visited. How often would they have the opportunity to invite a foreigner over?We managed a few different trips, but unfortunately due to our strict schedule we were not able to stay over night, but even half a day was better than nothing. One of our first visits was across the river where we went with Alamgir via bicycle. Women don't ride bikes in Bangladesh, so Anna got a few looks. After hitching the local boat across the river we set off on a 30 minute ride through some amazing green countryside with rice paddy fields and small villages. We were visiting a legend and the oldest man ... read more

Geo: 24.7418, 90.4037After Volunteering, I now feel that I have contributed to the enjoyment and happiness of some of the people's lives I have met and it feels hugely rewarding. Even though I may not be helping them physically or financially I know that, as Brother Jean Jacques had pointed out, that even turning up and showing a presence has more of a positive impact than you would think. As part of our experience in Bangladesh, we had the privilege of helping out with disabled day cares, disabled adults and street kids. On the outside some of these people are very poor and neglected, left to the streets, this is the way of life in Bangladesh. But on the inside, a group of amazing people have come together to help create change, give hope and give these ... read more

Geo: 24.7418, 90.4037Is it possible to love a country after only being there for a few hours or even one day?For me, Bangladesh was this place, an underrated country, an unknown country and a forgotten country where the glamour and allure of India dwarf its smaller neighbor. My previous trip to India and the desire to go back had helped me from the moment we arrived. Just like India, Bangladesh has many attributes that I had forgotten; the traffic, noise, smells, sights, colours, religions, weather and people reminded me of this amazing culture. Within hours of being in Bangladesh I was falling in love and I already couldn't wait to experience a unique opportunity thanks to fate and love.Where to start? Well we were invited to help volunteer with a group called Taize who have been housing ... read more
