Geo: -7.29709, 109.929Java is big, especially coming from Bali. Upon arrival we had hoped to get a package by car from Bali to Yogjakarta via Mount Bromo (as people we met seemed to be able to do it the other way around) but once we off the ferry there was nothing, barely a taxi around. We had to settle for a full day of buses to Malang. We came to realise that our brief one week in Java was going to be spent catching transport to places.Visiting the active volcano Mount Bromo at sunrise seems to be the most popular thing to do in Java but it's not a cheap or straight forward excursion. There are a few places that you can leave from. We chose to base ourselves in Malang. It's possible to stay a lot ... read more

Geo: -8.36369, 115.17Over four years ago when my wife and I were deciding on which countries to visit on our trip through South East Asia, she asked what about indonesia?! I dismissed it quite quickly mainly cause I probably thought it was just full of Australians and I didn't want to be that token Australian in Bali. And now look at us, four years later and we're having our wedding ceremony in the beautiful and gorgeous island of Bali in Indonesia! This was only the beginning of what is to be an exciting and wonderful honeymoon lasting three months. We had been eagerly counting down the days and finally we found ourselves relaxing poolside in a nice little villa and trying to acclimatise to hot weather. Within the next few days we had our wedding food tasting, ... read more

Geo: 30.5333, -9.7A bit late for this blog! For a nice birthday treat and a break from the English winter, we decided to head to Morocco! We had been recommended to visit a small little town along the coast which is a surfing hot spot. Taghazout!Taghazout is very close to Agadir which is convenient to get to.We did quite few days of surfing and chilling on the beach. Anna had done a very nice 30th treat which included some bubbly and cheese. We had a perfectly located apartment with sunset views and enjoyed a daily breakfast routine of chocolate inside a baguette. We originally were only going to stay there for 3 days but liked it so much we stayed for one week. The temperature in early February was perfect. For the final few nights we headed to Marrakech and got ... read more

Geo: 44.3667, 3.41667I always say it but I love going back to France. This time was a bit more special in many ways than others. Anna and I got Engaged!! In the south of France!.We went for a 10 day camping holiday down in the incredible Gorges Du Tarn. Our car upgrade started the trip off well, and with a few days at Anna's family's house (and a sneaky engagement approval from Anna's Dad) we found ourselves along the Loire River for our first night's sleep in our new tent. The Loire was gorgeous. We visited Chateau Chambord and cruised the river side via bike. After two nights we headed down to the Gorges du Tarn and stayed in a small but amazingly situated campsite. The area around Le Tarn is amazing and beautiful. Saint Enimie was a ... read more

Geo: -41.2865, 174.776Some two years later I am finally getting around to doing this blog! Wow!So after throwing the ring in to Mount Doom, we headed to Napier where we visited my Aunt. The town of Napier is quite nice with Art Deco buildings and the beach. It's also a handy place for wine lovers although we couldn't really appreciate in that way as we don't really drink wine, although in typing this two years later, we have more of a appreciation and liking of wine. We visited Te Mata peak with what Anna describes as the classic New Zealand landscape. We also visited Ocean Beach which is south of Napier and tucked in to a roast chicken lunch while improving our tans. Then it was on the road to Wellington to see yet another Aunt, via McDonalds in ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Taupo November 28th 2014

Geo: -38.6866, 176.07From Waitomo caves we made our way south-east to Rotorua. Rotorua is known for it's volcanic activity and thermal villages. We arrived around midday and took a tour at Whakarewarewa Thermal Village. Here we got a great perspective of how local people lived and live by using the natural environment around them. After the tour we treated ourselves to a private pool in the towns Polynesian baths. It was so relaxing and it was a perfect day to enjoy the views and escape the bus loads of South Korean tourists. That evening we had decided to travel up to the coast to a small town called Muteka. There wasn't any reason for visiting but we were sleeping there and it was a nice little coastal town with a relaxing feel. The following morning we thought that Tauranga ... read more

Geo: -36.8474, 174.766Back to the motherland! This time we were going to visit the North Island. Anna hadn't been to the North Island and I hadn't been back in many years, so we found the perfect excuse to visit on route to a wedding in Melbourne. One of the benefits was having various family members living all over the North Island so we were in for a treat. We flew in to Auckland where we stayed at my uncles and aunties. After a much needed sleep, we tacked the next day by visiting the city. We went up the sky tower which gives amazing 360 degree views. We were lucky enough to use my aunties retro car and from the city went and visited Piha Beach which is a nice little beach tucked away to the west ... read more

Geo: 38.7072, -9.13552Lisbon is a great city to visit for a few days and being in Europe it is so easy to catch a flight to another country for two or three days. As a joint birthday present we also treated ourselves to a nice hotel in the city center. One of the popular places to go and eat in Lisbon is the district of Bairro Alto. Bairro Alto offers a great range of restaurants with live music entertainment and you can finish it off in one of the bars. Our first view of the city in the day was a bit gloomy but it didn't stop us pounding the pavement of Baixo and the surrounding areas. It's hard to believe that Portugal was a leading country centuries ago. We stopped for a pretty wicked hot chocolate with ... read more

Geo: 52.2449, 21.0119I went to Warsaw to visit a good friend of mine who I travelled with in Nepal almost 4 years ago. I was welcomed with a blast from the past, a Dhal Bhat, which hit the spot. The following day I walked around the old town, well in Europe terms it's not as old as it could have been. It's a shame really, there is obviously a lot of history in a place like this. That evening we went to a bar in the new town, business district where Vodka is the only drink that the Polish will let you drink. I had a lot of fun meeting Radek's friends. The next day Radek and I took a bike tour throughout the city from Praga, the new and old town and other areas. We found a little ... read more
