Geo: 6.0334, 80.2184Galle! Galle Fort in particular is pretty nice Surrounded by high walls and filled with Portuguese and Dutch influenced architecture. It has plenty of accommodation and restaurants inside and has a nice relaxed and quiet vibe to it. We arrived via local bus from Mrrissa. Here we spent the day visiting the fort and enjoying the food at some of the nice restaurants. From Galle we caught a bus 20 km north to Hikkadua which is also another popular beach area. Hikkadua is more popular and busier than Mirissa and other beach places. There is a surplus of accommodation which line the main road in to town for a few kms. Here we did some diving, although Sri Lanka is not renowned for its diving. It felt more like a practice dive as the site ... read more

Geo: 7.28446, 80.6375Stunning train rides through tea plantations, gorgeous beaches, whale watching, diving and extremely friendly people! That's just a start to this amazing country, this got us excited! We didn't even know what Sri Lanka had to offer until about a week or two before arriving. We only stayed one night in the outskirts of Colombo and took the train to Kandy first thing the next morning. Kandy is in the hills and is a nice place to base oneself for day excursions. Unfortunately it was cloudy the whole time but it didn't stop us from doing a tuk tuk tour which was great! The botanical gardens were really nice and also the tea factory was quite interesting. We stayed in a nice homestay up above the city which offered nice views and quiet surroundings. We ... read more

Geo: 5.94354, 80.4589I never knew that the beaches in Sri Lanka were so good. One of those idyllic beaches that we based ourselves in for 6 nights was Mirissa Beach. We arrived by bus from Ella and immediately enjoyed the change from grey and rainy to hot and sunny.Mirrissa isn't a huge beach but it is a great place to stay for a while. It has amazing scenery with the token coconut trees. From Mirrissa there are heaps of things to do such as lounging about, whale watching, day excursions, surfing etc. We stayed in a nice small homestay for 5 nights and worked on our tans. Mirrissa is a good place to go whale watching and there are a few companies about but we chose to go with Raja and the whales as they promote ... read more

Geo: 3.12433, 101.684Kualar Lumpar pretty much marked the halfway point of our honeymoon, sadly! We were only visiting for three days before heading off to Sri Lanka. We based ourselves around China town, Jalang Petaling which is full of little market stalls and plenty of accommodation. I got myself a rather cheap haircut and the cheapness and lack of English resulted in a unsatisfactory haircut. Lucky hair grows back!We also visited Jalang Alor. During the evening the whole street is transformed into outdoor eateries. This is also a popular place to base oneself. There are also plenty of massage places, the massage district! We went across the main road to two shopping mall areas and splurged on some of the best burgers we've ever had. Not just once but the following evening we gave in to the ... read more

Geo: 21.9759, 96.0842 If you're thinking of heading north from Bagan to Mandalay then I would recommend taking the boat up stream. This was a great journey but also a long one as you are going against the current. It took us 12 hours by leaving at 5.30am. There were only 13 of us so it was great to have room to enjoy life along and on the banks of the river. We got breakfast and lunch as well as a few demonstrations on board eg using a longi and traditional face painting. The boat only runs in certain days so we were lucky it all worked out with our plans. We arrived in to Mandalay at 5 as the sun was setting. Mandalay was our departure point for our Myanmar trip and we only had ... read more

Geo: 21.3667, 95.4667 When the country of Myanmar is mentioned, one would most probably associate it with the temples of Bagan. Some three thousand temples big and small which make up the landscape. I doubt there would be anyone who says that Bagan is not worth a visit. This place is special! By bus we zig zagged our way out of the green and slightly mountainous area around Kalaw, which we wished we had time to visit, down to the flat lands to Bagan. There are three areas to stay in Bagan. Nyuang-U, Old Bagan and New Bagan which are about 5 km from each other. The temples are right on the doorstep of these places and can be accessed by bike and, as we would strongly recommend, by E bike which is cheap and easy. ... read more

Geo: 20.5672, 96.9159 Wow! The infamous Inle Lake! What a fantastic place. Getting around Myanmar is actually easy and just like their neighbours offer overnight VIP buses. We took one of these from Yangon to Inle Lake at a cost of only 9 pounds for the both of us. But the low cost didn't offset a rough night sleep wise. We made it to Inle Lake at about 8am, it rained quite heavily for 3 hours even though the rainy season should have finished. We based ourselves in Nyaung Shwe where most people base themselves Nyuang shwe is located along a inlet which connects to the lake. There is accommodation on the lake itself which requires a boat to get to. The one activity that every visitor does is do a day trip on the lake ... read more

Geo: -8.12993, 114.623North Bali was the next stop and we arrived from the Gilis to Amed. Amed looked like a nice little village but we went straight to Tulamben which is well known for a wreck dive site.Tulamben is small and there is basically one road that connects the east to the west. The roads were a lot quieter and the scenery is great with the volcanoes on one side and the sea on the other. The wreck dive is impressive, many divers visit the spot. There are plenty of places to explore amongst the wreck and were lots of fish and even a turtle. We then hired a car to the other side of the north coast which only took three hours in air con comfort. We arrived in Permeturan which is a place also well known for ... read more

Geo: -8.35724, 116.083Island time! And our first day without family which meant we were officially in honeymoon mode! What better way to start than on the laid back white sandy beaches of Gili Air off the north western coast of Lombok and easily accessible from several ports in Bali. Here we planned to relax and complete our dive course. Gili Air is big enough to enjoy all kinds of activities and relax without feeling bored. Snorkeling is a favourite and we even got close to a turtle on the first day.The view overlooking Lombok was quite nice to see each day and the sun kept on shining. Gili Air is a nice relaxing island and doesn't project a party vibe like its bigger brother Gili Tarwalgan. There are plenty of restaurants serving up western and local ... read more

Geo: 16.7837, 96.1568 Myanmar is a country that has a lot to offer and we were really looking forward to making the most out of every moment. We arrived in to Yangon on the full moon public holiday so fireworks greeted us as if they were celebrating our arrival, if only! The first noticeable difference coming from Indonesia was that there were no motorbikes or tuk tuks. I think these aren't allowed in Yangon. A sight to remember was driving at night with the Shwedagon Pagoda wistfully glowing gold in the near distant landscape which felt like one was being hypnotised. Day one and after 5 minutes outside, the heat was already making us uncomfortable, just finding a small shaded area was welcome relief. We checked out the area near our hotel in the town center ... read more
