South America » Peru » Cusco August 28th 2018

So apparently there's this amazing lost citadel of Machu Picchu tucked away in the mountains of Peru that people kept talking about, so we reluctantly thought we would go and visit. Turned out to be pretty spectacular! Cuzco is the place to base yourself to visit MP. We got here by a 17 hr overnight bus ride from Huacachina (Ica). We spent the first day acclimatising and wondering around the town, seeing the sights including the Plaza and market and eating a lunch (big bowl of soup followed by a dish of rice, chips and chicken) for £1.25! Cuzco had a nice feel about it. It sits in a valley at 3300 masl, where houses climb up the hills and it reminded me of Medellin in that sense. The following day we took a collectivo to ... read more

South America » Peru » Ica » Paracas August 22nd 2018

From the north to the south of Lima the landscape changes from high altitude mountains to desert landscape that is accompanied by the Pacific. There's small town called Paracas which is a popular spot to stop for a few nights. It was good to be back in to some warmth and less altitude and we didn't think about coming here until a couple we had met in the Galapagos were staying here and we thought that it would be a good opportunity to catchup with them and see what all the fuss was about. Paracas has some cool things to see and do. One trip everyone does is to take a boat to visit Los Ballestas islands (or poor mans Galapagos) which consists of thousands of birds including nazca boobies, comorants and terns and it also ... read more

South America » Peru » Ancash » Huaraz » Huascaran National Park August 15th 2018

Country number three, Peru! No points for guessing the main place to visit here, but some points for those who know of The Huascaran National Park and the main city of Huaraz located 8hrs by bus North East of Lima! This area is the highest point in the Andes and has excellent opportunities for day hikes and multi day treks and is where the famous mountain logo from the Paramount movies is located. Our stay in Lima was brief, we only saw a very small portion of Mira Flores in less than a day before catching the overnight bus to Huaraz. We had instant mountain views from our room and the temptation to visit immediately was there but first we had to spend a few days acclimatising. We had several day treks planned and our first ... read more

South America » Colombia » Cartagena August 13th 2018

After leaving our favourite place in Colombia, Capurgana, and leaving a sad Paco behind, we had to push on and continue our travels along the north coast, besides there was still lots to look forward to. Yes, we're going back in to the past for a moment to when we left Capurgana and took a boat and bus to get to a place called Tolu. We came here to base ourselves for a day trip to the San Bernardo islands which consists of several islands bathing in the warm waters of the Caribbean. We took a boat to the island of Murcura, latching on to a group who were doing a day tour from Cartagena. We had several hours on the small island and somehow found ourselves soaking up the sun on a quiet stretch (besides ... read more

Tayrona and Minca are two places that are a perfect escape from the bigger cities. Both can be visited as a day trip or overnight. Parc national Tayrona is popular due to the jungle dropping in the the sea with massive boulders lying all over the place. It also has great little beaches that offer an escape from civilisation. We did this park as a day trip. We got there at 8, when it opens. We took a bus for 10 minutes to avoid spending an hour walking to the main walking trail. It takes almost an hour to get to the first swimable beach and an extra 40ish minutes to get to the most popular beach of Cabo de Juan. We had a brief swim on the way due to already being drenched in sweat. ... read more

South America » Colombia » La Guajira » Punta Gallinas August 8th 2018

Once again, Colombia delivers! The diversity of this country is amazing and in the department of La Guajira you'll find a desert landscape that meets the Caribbean Sea. It is also the most northern point of South America. We highly recommend doing a tour here if time permits. A three day, two night tour is a great time to see all of the highlights in the comfort of an air conditioned 4WD. The best place to start the tour was from Riohacha. If we had started it from Santa Marta we would have had to add an extra 4-5 hours of driving and the price is a lot more. There were plenty of agencies offering the tour in Riohacha and we chose Alta Guajira Tours as they looked the most professional. All the tours do the ... read more

South America » Colombia » Choco August 4th 2018

Sure, you may be worried about travelling to this region with the FARC, palamilitary groups, narcotic makers and government troops (all enemies of each other) and the region's recent history, but it's actually now very safe. If you stay along the coast and don't ask questions then you'll be completely fine..and when the decision to come and visit this area is made, it will be worth it. It is our favourite place so far in Colombia and we really wanted to stay longer than 5 days! We got here by a night bus from Medellin, 10 hrs, and arrived to Turbo at 7 am and then took a 2.5 hr boat to Capurgana. You need a bit of patience for this trip, especially if you didn't sleep well on the bus. August to October brings calm ... read more

South America » Colombia » Antioquia » Guatape August 2nd 2018

The landscape around Piedra de Peñol is one of the best views in Colombia! followed up by the colours of Guatape make this spot an absolute must to visit. Most people probably know about these two places and it was easily accessible for a day trip from Medellin. Hostels in Medellin offer day trip tours to here but we decided to take the local bus from the north bus terminal. It took just under two hours to get to the rock, Piedra de Peñol. Climb the 650 steps and we were rewarded with absolutely incredible views. It would be wise to do it in the morning and not on a weekend as the top of the rock only offers a certain amount of space, not ideal for those who like their instagram poses without people in ... read more

South America » Colombia » Quindío » Salento July 23rd 2018

The Valle de Cocora, with its 60 meter high wax palm trees towering above you backed by green countryside and jungles. It's definitely a place to visit and that's why most people do! Salento is the place to base yourself for the Valle. Its a small town with colourful buildings and a place to slow down and relax...if you have the time! The colours are great and create a joyful and friendly atmosphere to the town. There are plenty of hostels and restaurants in Salento, just make sure when you visit that you check when the national holidays are. We happened to visit at the same time as the Colombian Independence Holiday and almost couldn't get any accommodation. It also meant that visiting the palm trees was more noiser and busier than we would have liked. ... read more
