Geo: 19.8841, 102.142I can't think of a better way to enter Laos than to cruise south down the Mekong river on a slow boat for two days, It was such a beautiful trip. I had no idea about the landscape let alone about Laos itself, and within two days I was blown away. There are so many people I know that have traveled South East Asia but haven't gone to Laos, so I was keen to experience most of what this country had to offer. We had organized a package deal which would take us to the boarder and to Luang Prabang, it included a two day slow boat down the Mekong with two nights accommodation and food provided for 2000 Baht each. We set off to the border in a mini van for 5 hours with a ... read more

Asia » Thailand » North-West Thailand » Chiang Mai October 17th 2011

Geo: 18.8, 98.98Northern Thailand has surprised me, I didn't realise how beautiful it was until we went for your trek, but I guess I didn't know what to expect as i knew nothing about the area. (warning, this could be a long blog). We returned to Chiang Mai later that night and unfortunately we had to rush Anna to the hospital with a bladder infection. Luckily we only spent a few hours there and at no real cost, only for the medication. Needless to say the following day was quiet and the only eventful thing was later that night when we grabbed some dinner around the corner at a very nice looking restaurant but owned by a scary looking, decieving, rude and unfriendly ladyboy. She points to the unmarked priced food on the black board and ... read more

Geo: 18.8, 98.98This story begins in a land far far away, Krabi, as we were bundled in to the bus bound for Bangkok in a hidden bus stop amongst the trees, giving the feel that we were outcasts never to been seen. We arrived with no issues to Koh San Rd a bit before 6 and grabbed some accommodation and caught up on the lost sleep only to wake around 12.30, but we weren't planning on doing anything that day, besides watch New Zealand win in the rugby. The next day we had bought tickets to Chiang Mai on our 3rd 12hr overnight bus in one week. We consider ourselves lucky to have caught our bus on time.We knew there were floods but thought nothing of it, but Chiang Mai and surrounding areas had been hit hard ... read more

Geo: 7.7455, 98.7754Beach Time!! The infamous beaches of Thailand is too good to pass up, although depending on the type of person you are will reflect the type of beaches/islands you go to. So as the less party/get smashed type of people Anna and I are we decided to head towards Krabi and catch the ferry to the Island of Koh Phi Phi Don.Our trip started when we tried to get to the bus station with some difficulty. We wanted to chill out in a park before going to the bus station at around 5 but the park we wanted wasn't really a park. So we ended up taking a train, walking, taxi, local bus and more walking just to get to the old bus station, so a further taxi ride to the new southern bus ... read more

Geo: 13.75, 100.517Back to business, more countries, more photos, more adventures means more blogs. And I can hear you saying "He's traveling again!! Where the hell to this time?", and my response would be, "Yes, again!!!, this time South East Asia"This trip will include Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos. A well trodden path but full of history, religion and changing landscape. This time Anna will be with me for the whole ride and I couldn't be happier as this marks the start of our life together with out extensive breaks. I am hanging up those Skype headphones for once.My plane trip to Bangkok starts off pretty bad, my plane is delayed for almost 3 hours as the previous plane delays our take off and then just before hitting the air we are forced back to the gate ... read more

Geo: -30.4524, 152.8985 months late, but I didn't think that I would still be continuing with these blogs after three years. This will be the last blog related to my work in NSW, and what a way to finish off than with a few bits and pieces from around the state over the period of three months.I guess I should start from the beginning, after returning from a 7 month trip to Europe to spend time with Anna, I found myself with one last stint up in NSW.I didn't go straight back to the schools, but instead my company picked up a subcontracting opportunity with another company to apply a bomb proof film on the external windows of the Australian Federal Parliamentary Building in Canberra. It was exciting and something different to the schools. Our company ... read more

Geo: 1.28941, 103.85After a sad departure from Anna and a 12 hour flight to Singapore, I landed in a wave of heat, humidity and discomfort where my main priority was to get to the hostel in Lavender and get some much needed rest because as per usual I got limited sleep on the flight in.I arrived at 2pm but I didn't go out and explore for the rest of the day.The inspiration for the title of this blog comes from after finding it difficult to sleep in Singapore. The first night was pretty rough, I managed to fall asleep for a few hours but from 12pm I lay awake till 6am, and to add insult to injury I was bitten by bed bugs,I found and killed two crawling around my feet, but it was too late, itching ... read more

Geo: 50.8209, -0.139846While in Guildford, we took advantage of seeing other places within England and also celebrated a few other special occasions within the period that I was based there.A few day trips here and there and I was able to see more of the country and yet still a small percentage of the entire UK, but it's a good start. One of the first places Anna and I went to was Brighton for our 11 month anniversary. The seaside town is famous for its rounded pebbled beaches, popular in the Summer months (When the sun does actually shine). The unfortunate thing about being based in Guildford is that access to these places are not as direct as you would like. In most cases we had to go up to London and branch out from there.Getting to Brighton ... read more

Geo: 30.9173, -6.91912Moroccan Landscape is very dry and colorless, but is fascinating in every direction you look. It may look harsh and un-inviting, especially when it's extremely hot, but hidden treasures of old towns and green oasis are commonly found. We signed up for a three day tour to the Mergouza Sand Dunes, but to get there we had to endure two days of driving. There are many companies out there that provide these tours. There is also a two day trip to the Zagora Sand Dunes but from what I have heard and from some photos I have seen they are not as impressive as the Merzouga Dunes.Merzouga is hard to do and and to enjoy in a two day time frame. After talking with an agent, the pull to Merzouga was strong but we had ... read more

Geo: 31.1106, -4.0187The Sahara Desert is probably the most well known desert in the world. A harsh environment for humans and animals alike and a desert of huge proportions, second only to Antarctica. A desert is one form of traveling that I hadn't experienced and I was very keen to experience it.After two long and hot days in the van we finally reached the Merzouga Dunes, a big almost egg shaped random patch of sand (see Google maps satellite image) not far from the Algerian border. Everyone donned their scarfs wrapped over their heads but I had to settle for my tee shirt. One of the British guys obviously had bought a non genuine scarf because as he wet the scarf for extra relief, the dye came out and covered his face and shoulders blue.We packed ... read more
