It's been a while since I had spent more than a week in Melbourne since starting my NSW job, but the week Anna and I had before our campervan road trip to Brisbane was one full of action.
After our day trip to the Great Ocean Road we had the privilege of attending Regan and Janelle's Australian Day Barbeque at their place, also where we are staying.
The day was hot and it was great to catch-up with friends as well as enjoying a shrimp on the barbie, triple J's hottest 100 countdown and some backyard cricket.
We also went out for my birthday drinks in Richmond, with a few attendees, it was a really nice night.
I loved the way one drink was served in a paper bag giving the "homeless bum" feel.
We also did some flat hunting throughout the outer suburbs to fill in a day.
Some of the days were hot and we sought refuge in doors for one day and at Bon Beach along the bay for a swim and birthday dinner for Regans Dad with homemade pizzas.
Then It was my birthday, reaching the grand old age of 27 and what a great way to enjoy it by going to
Healesville Sanctuary followed by some spicy food in the city.
After the initial present opening ceremony with Anna (A fire twirler, sweet as!) we got set to head out to Healesville Sanctuary, close to where we were staying in Croyden, so that was one advantage of staying so far out was that it was quicker to get too.
Healesville Sanctaury is a wildlife sanctuary full of native Australian animals in open areas and it doesn't have the caged in feel.
We looped around and saw Koalas, lazy Kangaroos, sleeping Tasmanian Devils and Wombats and much more. We attended a reptile show and then a bird show where the birds knew where to fly and what to say. It was great, especially the talking parrot.
We also saw the 10 most dangerous snakes in Australia exhibit, luckily from behind the glass.
After a great day at Healesville it was then off to the opposite direction in to the city and China town with Regan, Janelle, Richard, Rikki, Anna and Myself for a birthday feed. Richard and I being twins and also loving spicy food worked well for the both of us.
Digging in to an old favourite of spicy cumin pork ribs and a Singtao to wash
it down.
Back at the house I was surprised with a birthday cake which topped off an amazing birthday.
Other days included a long time reunion skate with Regan which wasn't as bad as we both thought as well as a popcorn and movie night at Regan and Janelle's with their 70's looking popcorn machine, served in appropriate packaging.
A fantastic week that was also a good introduction for Anna into the Australian way of life.
Melbourne is the best and I cannot wait to settle for a while there.
