Geo: 28.488, 85.9351Wow!! As soon as you enter the plane you start to feel the excitement, when you take off and get above the smog of Kathmandu and the mist, you see the Himalayas and you are immediately captivated. You want to take as many photos as possible from the get go but you know you have to limit yourself. The flight into Lukla is an experience in itself, the landscape is breathtaking where the decent into Lukla airport weaves through the valley's and approaches possible one of the smallest runways ever, but it's angles uphill to compensate.A safe landing is made and you step out into a cooler climate with guides and porters clambering for some business, all while being quickly whisked into the baggage waiting area. Lukla is a small town and is the ... read more

Geo: 27.7029, 85.3182Woot, Woot, I'm so excited to be entering Nepal and starting another adventure in another country. After finally getting to the border and a quick immigration check I found myself waiting a few hours till my supposed 18-20hr bus ride to Kathmandu. I booked a "Private" bus which was still pretty dilapidated but much better than the local buses. But that's the best that I was going to get.It was an interesting ride. I had a lady on the row next to me spit the whole way, just on to the walkway in the middle of the bus. It was a bumpy and noisy ride from the loose windows banging against the frames. I knew that stopping was going to be limited so i therefore limited my water consumption to cope.We stopped for a break ... read more

Asia » India » Sikkim » Pelling January 27th 2010

Geo: 27.3016, 88.2327I really like Sikkim, the scenery is really amazing with the steep hills and looming mountains above. It's a nice place to come and relax and take in the silence before heading into the more crowded places. It's amazing to drive through the valley's and seeing houses built on the most extreme slopes and in the most random places where even getting access would be a hassle. After taking a 5 hour jeep ride from Gangtok to Pelling we settled into Hotel Kabur. Two French girls, Anna and Lucie, who took our jeep also stayed here. Hotel Kabur is a nice little place to stay with a nice restaurant up the top. Here we found a whole bunch of other travelers. We grabbed some dinner and headed for an early night, it was pretty cold so ... read more

Geo: 27.3292, 88.6169The Tibetan culture is strong in Sikkim, the people here live a more slower life to that of the bustling cities of India. The locals cast the traditional Saree's away for a more western and labeled look. Nestled among the steep and green hills of Sikkim lies the "Capital" Gangtok. After taking a bumpy and squished in five hour shared jeep ride we finally arrived into Gangtok, though it was dark. It was a tad warmer than Darjeeling but it is at a lower altitude. We nestled into the New Modern Central Lodge at a cheap price but the room we got was along a main road so there was a lot of noise, especially the car horns. After an early rise from the noise Irma and myself finally got our act together for some breakfast. We ... read more

Geo: 27.04, 88.2636To get to Darjeeling from Kolkota you take an overnight train, so mine left at 10pm and arrived around 9am the next morning. I thought i was going to get a sleepless night but it turned out OK, the guy kinda next to me had some serious snoring happening, almost louder than the train.I managed to wake up around 7:30 and I arrived into New Jaipaguri at about 9. Once out of the train station there are so many jeeps offering rides to Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Gangtok along with many other places but mostly these three. I had to get a Sikkim permit in Siliguri so i grabbed a bike taxi and 30min later i was applying for my Permit. I then hopped in a shared jeep to Darjeeling. There was only four in the ... read more

Geo: 22.6473, 88.3104After spending 5 weeks in South India i was looking forward to tackling the north. The flight from Chennai took 2 hours and the cab ride to Sudder street took almost 1.5hrs. so we checked into our accommodation where there was HOT water....OMG it had been almost one month without hot water, you didn't need hot water down south though, but it was great. We didn't do much during the day, just hit up the internet and got some food, I bought my bus ticket to Durgapur where i was going to meet with Nishant for a couple of days. After walking around for a while we grabbed some dinner at a bar/restaurant where there was some kind of live karaoke happening, it was bloody loud. The next day we planned to do the walking ... read more

Geo: 13.0615, 80.2478After finding that trains were booked out on the original route we were going to take, we had to change our plans. This seemed an easier way for both of us seeing as we weren't backtracking. So our new plan was to head east to Chennai and then fly to Calcutta. We left Hampi around midday where we caught a train to Guntakal which was a stopover for the night due to having to catch the train at 6.30 the next morning. The train ride to Guntakal was not a enjoyable one, it seemed to be overbooked and people were cramming in our carriage. We arrived in Guntakal with no accommodation because we couldn't find any information about the town, it wasn't even mentioned in the lonely planet. But we asked around and found a ... read more

Geo: 15.3333, 76.4667Happy New Year from Hampi, and what a nice place to celebrate a new decade.Well after a week and a bit in Goa, we had to leave, so we caught the train to Hospet which is only 14km away from Hampi. The train ride was quite nice and unexpected. Carole and Myself couldn't get two seats together let alone in the same carriage, but i ended up sitting next to Chuck from New York who was part of a big group (Around 150 from all over the world, Archeologists, Professors etc.) who were celebrating the 30th anniversary of some excavation. And because i was sitting with Chuck i managed to get some free snacks because they thought i was part of the group. We had a Thali on the train for lunch and seeing ... read more

Geo: 15.3913, 73.9485Once we had hopped of the train we were waiting for a rickshaw and we met a girl called Rebecca in which the three of us shared a rickshaw, we arrived in Patnem in which we all had no place booked so before we headed out to look for accommodation the three of us had a drink. Rebecca messaged a friend to come and meet her, so her friend came with another girl who turned out to be Emma who was Caroles friend, so it was pretty random, but a they had got us some accommodation in a beach hut for 700Rs which is fairly cheap for this time of year, but we only had it for 4 nights. So we settled into the hut and before we knew it we were lazying about ... read more

Geo: 12.8694, 74.8426A home stay in India is a must, and where we were headed was the Varnum homestay located about 15 km outside of Manathavady in the state of Wayanad. We arrived at about 2pm and were immediately welcomed with some lunch. The mother and father of the homestay where both busy during they day. Beena the wife was attending a week long yoga course and Vargese the husband had spent all day driving his son 400km to another place to study, he ended up getting back at 4 am, but was up before us in the morning.Once we settled in we took a walk around the property which have rice fields and banana plantations, we went a bit further into some bush land with a few trails.Along the way we noticed some big poo ... read more
