We were getting to the stage of our trip where we weren't too interested in checking out all of the ‘tourist spots’ but enjoyed relaxing by the pool and trying to do as little as possible. We landed the perfect powered site at the caravan park where are van was right next to the pool fence. The little girls are really enjoying all of the swimming that they are able to do and their confidence and abilities in the pool are improving every day. (Some good off season training for Surf Life Saving!) Besides stocking up on food, we only went for one outing in Kununurra to the Zebra Rock Gallery. We had heard about this rock from other travellers along the way and were keen to purchase some to manufacture some of our own jewellery. ... read more

The turn off to Parry Creek Road is about 20kms from Wyndham, so after a few kilometres of bitumen we were back on the dirt again. Amongst the corrugations we hoped to find somewhere nice to camp, with a place to launch the tinnie and barra waiting to be caught - not too much to ask is it? Our wishes were met, well almost! We found a great camping spot on the side of the river with a spot to launch the tinnie, great tree for a swing and wood to be collected for a fire - only thing the Ord didn’t provide was Barra! The amount of wildlife along the Ord was amazing with hundreds of crocs, kangaroos and wallabies, lots of bird life and King Brown Snakes!! We set up the beach shelter for ... read more

Mid afternoon we arrived at Wyndam and what appeared to be a very run down dusty and dirty town. So much for the excitement of arriving in a town after all that time!! The caravan park was old but had the basics as well as a pool so we set up camp right next to it. You should have heard the excitement when the girls saw the pool - not one of the waterfalls we went to got that much praise!! We decided a night out at the pub was the way to go, so we headed into town to the Wyndam pub for dinner. The little girls enjoyed exploring the pub, Ki collecting coasters and Ella discovering the toys. The meals were massive but we put our best effort to make a dent in them. ... read more

Six hours of mud slides and corrugations later we pulled into El Questro with one very muddy car and van. El Questro is the tourist mecca of the Kimberley’s with small store, restaurants, art gallery as well as you basic campground. We were all exhausted after the long day in the car and looking forward to setting up and having a wash. It was so nice to have our first hot shower in over a week! We also enjoyed an icy cold drink at the bar, even though one Lemon Ruski was $9.00!! There are many gorge walks to go on in the surrounds of El Questro. We decided to hike into: • Zebedee Springs - A permanent thermal spring surrounded by palms and sheer cliff faces. This was a short 1.5km return walk to the ... read more

We were on the road again and ready for another adventure filled day. We stopped in at Galvan’s Gorge on our way. After about a 1.5km walk we were met with a waterfall with a circular pool about 20 metres across. On one side of the pool a rope was strung from a tree ready for some swinging. Matt and Tahlia gave it a go, followed by a brave Ki. You had to stand on a tree branch about 2 metres above the water and then swing out and jump. Kianna launched off and did a big jump into the pool. On her second attempt she launched off but would not let go of the rope until she had swung back and forth about 4 times and had no choice but to jump as she was ... read more

Silent Grove (Wednesday 4th - Thursday 5th June) We were very keen to get to Bell Gorge in the King Leopold Ranges for a long awaited swim. We set up camp at Silent Grove situated about 10km from the falls. Our camp site was beautiful with a scenic rock wall behind us, table and fire place - Luxury! After set up was complete we donned our bathers, packed the backpack and drove to the gorge walk starting point. It was then about a 2km walk over rocky terrain to the falls. The walk was truly worth it with a spectacular water fall and lots of rocky swimming pools. We had a great afternoon swimming and following the rock pools upstream. The view was amazing as well as the wildlife with lots of water monitors, frogs and ... read more

We pulled into the spectacular vista of Windjana Gorge, a 3.5km gorge formed over millions of years by the Lennard River winding its way through an ancient limestone reef. The rock wall formed by the river is shaded red and orange and spans up to 100 metres and provides a beautiful view from the camp. We were all very keen to set up and go for a cool off swim in the gorge. So we popped on our bathers, packed the towels, goggles and snorkels and walked into the gorge. The sight that met us was not conducive to swimming - hundreds of fresh water crocs sunning themselves. Still in positive spirits we continued walking down the gorge marvelling at the amount of crocodiles and how close you could get to them. We decided that if ... read more

After a long day of corrugated roads and food stocking up in Broome we set out not really knowing where we would stay for the night. At about 5:30 we came across the Nillibubbica rest stop and decided that enough is enough for one day. As soon as we pulled into the rest stop the ever perceptive Ella yelled our ‘bucket wash’ her immediate, no shower, no electricity observation. There is nothing much to note about this place except that there was lots of red dirt, several cows mooing right behind our van and a very dodgy drop toilet with cockroaches scurrying all around it. Needless to say we made for a quick get away in the morning with more scenic campgrounds to come - we hope!! Our time on the west coast has come to ... read more

After a very dusty and corrugate trek of some 170km into the Dampier Peninsula we pulled into Middle Lagoon Camping Area, a very rustic bush camp with lots of shady camp site options. After locating a prime spot we set up camp then headed to the lagoon to put in the tinnie and have a swim. This was a great place to go swimming, fishing and generally relax in a peaceful setting. Each morning the little girls, Matt and I set out in the tinnie across the bay to fish in a small river inlet. (While Tahlia enjoyed a quiet sleep in!) The water in the river was so clear and you could see the fish checking out the lure’s. The only down side being that they didn’t seem to want to bite! Only catch was ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » Broome May 30th 2008

I was really looking forward to getting to Broome and checking out this famous Australian town. The layout of Broome is unusual with Cable Beach at one end and the town centre and City Beach at the other, with approximately 5km in between filled with resort upon resort. Broome’s housing and surrounds really remind me of Darwin, that cross between being in the bush and the tropics. Our site seeing tour of Broome included: • Japanese Cemetary - A tribute to many of the early settlers who were involved in Broome’s pearling history. Amazing to see this tribute to Japanese pearlers - unfortunately unable to read any headstones! • Gantheaume Point - The home prehistoric dinosaur footprints. A must see for Ella who is fascinated by dinosaurs and will sit and watch the doco ‘Walking with ... read more
