As we pulled into 80 Mile Beach Caravan Park I felt quite sceptical. It looked very red and dusty. It turned out to be a great place with friendly staff and a peaceful atmosphere with no driving between 7pm and 7am permitted. Some residents live there permanently and they even have Sunday morning markets. It was amazing to have power and water in the middle of nowhere. We were keen to check out this sandy stretch of coast. As we walked over the sand dunes to the beach we were met with the site of fishermen lining the shore as far as the eye can see. The fishing must be good!! The girls and I enjoyed swimming in the turquoise water (avoiding fishing lines) and collecting shells from the thousands that line the shore. Our hunter ... read more

Another pack up, another day in the car and another set up and we are at Cape Keraudren Reserve. Cape Keraudren sits at the southern tip of 80 Mile Beach. Now this is more like it!! We have found the perfect campsite on the beach. No other campers, perfect solitude and a calm bay with a lake inlet for the girls to swim. The girls were straight into exploring the rock pools and were delighted to find that the pools were overflowing with hermit crabs. A nightly exploration to the camp toilets led us to the discovery of millions of hermit crabs everywhere. You needed to use the torch when walking to avoid stepping on them. We soon had a hermit crab farm outside of our van who’s number kept growing and growing. This reserve provides ... read more

After a fairly big day on the road we pulled into ’40 Mile Camp’. We were expecting a sandy bay, but were presented with a rocky outcrop, low tide and sand that resembled red dirt. There are no facilities at this site, just a camp ground host. The amazing thing being that the camp ground was packed, the only proviso for camping - a max. 3 month stay!! Amazingly the campground was packed, mainly with regulars from Perth who spend their winters here. Our neighbours will be here until August!! We are not sure why this place is so popular. Must be the fishing! The regulars have extensive setups, perched here on the edge of the coast in the middle of nowhere. We even had a small vegie garden and a stone fireplace on our site. ... read more

Back in Exmouth again! After 7 days in the bush we needed a stopover with ‘Electricity’ and ‘Showers’. After spending more money at the supermarket we caught up on washing our clothes and ourselves and enjoying some time pool side before taking off in the morning and heading back to the bush. Matt’s Eye View After a night in Exmouth for a shop and a shower, we headed away from the surf and beautiful reefs of Ningaloo and what felt like it must have been the pinnacle of our journey around WA. Heading as much east as north now, our next stop was Forty Mile camp. We found a red dust camp ground and an abundance of grey army fishos, staying for “around 6 months”, a quick scan around and I was thinking...why, I guess the ... read more

Our next destination was Ningaloo Reef. “Australia’s largest most accessible reef.” We were very keen to check out the sea life and Matt the waves at Yardie Creek. We headed to Cape Range National Park where many small camp grounds butt up to the beach and thus the coral reef. We spent the first night at Ned’s Camp and then moved on to Yardie Creek. Our original 2 night stay turned into 5 and we spent our days: • Trying to fish in the tinnie - between the girls sleeping, being sea sick etc. • Swimming in the calm bay • Hiking into Yardie George • Playing on the sand hills • Surfing Ningaloo Reef A major highlight was drift snorkelling at Turquoise Bay, about a 15 min drive from our camp. We were cruising along the highway, 100kms from Coral Bay, girls watching DVD, me trying to rest and Matt following that white line when the tranquillity was destroyed by a severe tyre blow out. The front right hand tyre was destroyed. Needless to say it was changed over without too much bother except for the little girls complaining and wanting to watch the proceedings next to the busy highway.....stressful!! It was an amazing contrast pulling into Coral Bay, such a remote location, yet so busy. Coral Bay consists of 2 large caravan parks, hotel, backpackers, small local shops and many tour booking outlets. There were hundreds of people there. We merged in among other vans feeling quite out of the place after the tranquillity of Red Bluff. The girls were soon to adjust due to the ... read more

After a fairly long day in the car and a 100kms of corrugations we were treated with the view of the massive bluff that is ‘Red Bluff’. As we drove in we could see the bay with its huge shore break and the barrelling waves at the tip of the Bluff. We hunted out a choice camping location and set up to the loud roar of the shore break as the sets roll through. This was a sound that we managed to get used to and sleep through as the waves continued to pound onto the sand. Just when you thought you had gotten used to it, a massive set would go through with a loud roar and we were constantly commenting on ‘that was a big one’. The little community of Red Bluff is amazing ... read more

Whalebone Beach Our trusty camping guide directed us to several camping grounds just south of Denham. They are located on the southern edge of the Peron Peninsula, and the Shire of Shark Bay only allow 4 vehicles to each camp site per night. We were able to stay at Whalebone Bay and couldn’t believe our eyes when we saw how pristine this spot was. We set up our van just a few metres back from the lapping water in the calm bay. It was beautiful - definitely the location winner so far - although Tahlia thinks it would need to toilets to make it perfect. We set up the van in record time and set up the tinnie for an afternoon on the Bay. We were hoping to catch fish for dinner but only ended up ... read more

We pulled into Denham expecting to have a quick playground break and move on, but after several enquiries found that Monkey Mia was booked out and the camp grounds that we wanted to stay in required notice a day in advance, so we decided to set up in Denham at Shark Bay caravan park and enjoy a swim in the pool. The caravan park was pretty dismal but the pool was great, from the photos of the pool you would think that we were in a tropical oasis rather than a dusty caravan park. Friday morning we set off early to catch the feeding of the Dolphin’s at Monkey Mia. There was a fair crowd there but we managed to see several dolphins up very close and Ki was lucky to be chosen to feed a ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » Kalbarri May 8th 2008

We arrived at Kalbarri on Saturday afternoon and were pleasantly surprised to see that it was quite a small town - we were expecting that it would have become a bit more commercialised. We checked into the caravan park and launched into set up mode (we are getting pretty good at it). We then headed straight for ‘Baby Jacques’ the best swimming beach in Kalbarri and enjoyed a great swim and play in the waves (the water temperature is so nice). After out cool down we headed back to camp to meet our fellow holiday makers, Joey, Heidi and the ‘triplets’ and Robbie and Joyce. The girls were very excited about the arrival of the ‘triplets’ and couldn’t wait to see them and have some play mates. Brendan also came up to Kalbarri for a few ... read more
