In Perth we had brought a book on ‘Camping Guide to WA’. It recommended a campground approx 50kms from Geraldton called Coronation Beach. We decided to give it a go for a couple of nights. It was a really well set up camp ground. We lucked in with a great spot just a short stroll from the beach. It was nice to spend a couple of quiet nights here, just taking it easy and not embarking on any huge adventures, just some drives around the local beaches and plenty of swims. Our only mishap was a short drive down the sandy beach track where we were stopped from continuing due to flooding of the river mouth inlet, when turning around to return we managed to bog the car in the soft sand with the heavy tinnie ... read more

We were all looking forward to getting to Geraldton and visiting Brendo, especially the little girls who were very excited with lots of hugs awaiting. It was nice to get to Brendo’s home and to have several days out of the van. The girls enjoyed having a house to stay in and space to run around. They even invented back yard cricket with the esky lid and tennis ball. We were very lucky to have a personal Bureau of Meteorology Tour (They are advertised at the Visitor Information Centre) and balloon launch from our tour guide Brendan. The girls enjoyed watching the launch of the ‘huge’ balloon. We also visited Gero’s southern beaches where the girls and I had a swim and sand castled and Matt and Brendo scrambled for a surf (not the best waves ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » Pinnacles April 27th 2008

We left the big city of Perth and hit the highway to hunt out the Pinnacles and then Brendan in Gero. You may ask what are the Pinnacles? They are thousands of limestone pillars (up to 4 metres high) rising up from the sand. The reason that they have formed is long and technical so won't get into that! What was supposed to be an enjoyable diversion into the Pinnacles was interrupted by a ‘Robot’ Ranger Woman and a rule that all vans had to be unhitched to enter. Nuances aside, the effort was worth it with amazing views of the Pinnacles, the stark shapes of the stones against the spectacular yellow sand. Take your mind back 20 years and envision Carrie and Amy at the Pinnacles as 12 and 10 year olds hand standing our ... read more

After another long day in the car we arrived at Perth late on Friday afternoon. With laptop working hard and girls getting wrestless in the back seat we struggled to find a caravan park on the Anzac day long weekend. After some thorough searching we were able to locate a park in Swan Valley so headed directly there. After set up and clean up we decided to head out for some dinner. We circled the suburbs hunting for somewhere to eat. Why is it that when you want to find a pub or a restaurant or anywhere you can’t when you need to? Anyway we finally pondered upon an Italian restaurant and appeased our insatiable appetites with lots of pizza. The next morning we set out to explore Perth. We began our morning at a beautiful ... read more

By the end of the day we had left behind another 730km of road with no notable stops except for the mandatory icy pole break ($3.10 for a chocolate bar and $4.00 for a 300ml juice at Caiguna). We arrived at Norseman at about 4.30pm and headed straight for the supermarket to buy some fresh fruit and veg. After that we decided to treat ourselves to a night at the caravan park and to 5 very overdue showers (Our last showers had been on Sat 19th - mind you we kept clean filing the 5 of us through the mandatory evening bucket wash - good water conservation!). After a good night’s sleep we awoke to the sound of the Bugle announcing the Anzac Day Dawn Service. We then took a quick tour of Norseman, a historical ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Western Australia April 24th 2008

We packed up camp and farewelled the sand and salt scrub of Cactus ready to begin the ominous task of crossing the Nullarbor. As we set off a flurry of clouds began to cover the sky and we were treated with the sight of rain falling over the Nullarbor Plains. Our aim for the day was to cover 730km to the small town of Eucla. The girls and I busied ourselves with art work, reading, watching DVD’s and knitting, while Matt knuckled down for the drive. To the west of the Nullarbor lies the Great Australian Bight, also known as “Land’s End”. The plain drops up to 90 metres into the pounding Southern Ocean. The Bunda Cliffs stretch in an unbroken arc for over 200km. There are several coastal lookouts that provide the opportunity to stand ... read more

From one extreme to the next-we leave the green grass and calm bay of Streaky and arrive to the desert dust, reefy shore and crashing waves of Cactus. With a lot of apprehension (the girls) and excitement (Matt) we set up the Jayco in a dusty clearing amongst the salt scrub. Our only luxury-a spiral shaped drop toilet built of lime stone with a view of the stars. We headed straight for the waves. We were met by the sight of Moose's rusted out cruiser on the shore and a heap of guys vying for a ride at caves. The waves were going off!! Matt wasted no time in gathering wetsuit and surfboard and paddling out to join the crew. While the girls and I searched the rockpools of beautiful Cactus beach for shells and sea ... read more

After our first full day in the car we were rewarded with the sight of green rolling hills and a beautiful calm bay, the surrounds of Streaky Bay Caravan Park. Joined by Mum, Dad, Tahlia's friend Cheyanne, Buzz, Julie, Emma and Abbey we were in for an adventure filled week. Matt and Buzzy were up at the crack of dawn each day, catching waves at the Island as the sun rose. They were rewarded for their early morning efforts with the Island producing clean 4ft waves for several days. Each day upon their return we either spent our afternoons motoring out in the tinnies in hunt of the elusive whiting or basking in the sun at beautiful Granites Beach. Some highlights or maybe low lights would be: -Not catching any whiting for the first three days ... read more

After many years of considering the idea of a WA Trip, the leave has been granted, equipment organised, bags packed and we are on the road. Many adventures await the Collopy crew as we spend 3 months making our way across the Nullarbor to Perth, up the expanse of the WA coast, across to Darwin and back down the centre. With our only plans being a week in Streaky Bay and a week in Kalbarri, we are free to explore the sights and sounds that take our fancy along the way. We are in no doubt that we will have developed an expert knowledge of all beaches and and playgrounds along the west coast!.
