We had heard a lot of good reports of Lucky Bay and it certainly didn’t disappoint! A beautiful calm bay with amazing granite boulders on one side and sweeping sand hills on the other. Again the sand is the whitest of whites and the water so clear. The camp ground is busy but we find a nice spot with a view of the bay to set up camp. We are immediately greeted by several kangaroos who we decided must be the Campground Hosts. We settled in and then went for a walk to explore the rock pools and amazing granite formations of Lucky Bay. The morning saw mals removed from bags, wetsuits on and a paddle out to explore the coast line from the water. There was plenty of fish and sea life to be discovered ... read more

We were all looking forward to heading back to the bush and were so lucky to find the perfect camping ground at Cape Arid National Park. Cleared private camp sites and newly built camp kitchen and toilets, and the best part, we had it all to ourselves. The beach, just a short walk away is beautiful, sand as white as snow and water that is crystal clear. Highlights were: Fishing at Tagon Beach and the excitement as Matt pulled in three huge salmon – freezer is now full! Donning our wetsuits each morning and heading down to surf, swim and build drip castles in the drizzling rain. There is something exhilarating about swimming in the ocean in the rain! The girls each having a turn at steering the car as we drive along the beach. Lots ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » Esperance April 30th 2013

We left a hot and dusty Norseman in the morning to arrive at a cold and rainy Esperance in the afternoon. The girls spotted the golden arches with lightening speed and yep...we're lunching at Maccas. I must admit I was looking forward to a flat white with soy! We spent the afternoon feeding the washer and dryer with $1 coins and "enjoying" the 15kt onshore and drizzly rain...awesome. The drizzly weather persisted throughout the next day but we did manage to squeeze in a walk along the esplanade and a delicious brew from Coffee Cat. Our final morning in Esperance saw skies clear and the opportunity to take a spin around the Great Ocean Loop, not quite the VIC version, but 11km of beaches, cliffs and islands with the Southern Ocean as the backdrop is still ... read more

Another packup, another farewell (to the Gordon's, thanks for the great company and look forward to meeting again somewhere down the track!), another long day in the car and we finally arrive at Norseman. Matt conducts some caravan roofing repairs whilst the girls and I play bocci (a quick game as the mozzies rapidly move in for the kill!). I figure if I cover every joint or possible leak point in copious amounts of silicon then the stupid thing can't possibly f-ing leak, half an hour of lying on the roof of the van hand squeezing silicon over everything...and I do mean everything...hands, arms, hair (yes I even managed to get some in "my hair"...impressive ha). We headed into the main street to explore the sights and sounds of Norseman: 1. Tin camels on roundabout 2. ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » Eucla April 27th 2013

A long day spent in the car, hot, dry, dusty, one long and straight bitumen road skirted by small shrubs and not a tree in sight, where else but the Nullarbor Plain. Yet half way along the Bight and a short drive toward the coast and we are given an amazing panorama of the waves crashing against the 80m cliffs of the Great Australian Bight. One can only imagine what the early explorer's thought when they circumnavigated this beautiful and yet treacherous expanse of the coast. We stopped at Head of Bight to view these 80m tall Bunda Cliffs of the Bight and hopefully we'll see some Whale's here on our way back! Next time we decide to do a seven hour driving day we won't do it when there's 3-4m of swell and northerly winds! ... read more

Oceania » Australia » South Australia » Mexican Hat April 26th 2013

Just a short drive from Fowler's Bay lies Mexican Hat, a beautiful beach camp. Already on location are the Gordan family, James, Sonya, Phoebe and Hannah whom we met while at Cactus. We joined them and set up camp, two Jayco's on a small sandhill overlooking the pristine beach on one side and the small island of Mexican Hat and the rolling sand dunes on the other. We spent our days fishing, surfing, walking and boarding on the sandhills, swimming with seals and driving along the spectacular clifftops on a precarious dirt track! This part of the coast has some serious Potential...have to head back for a bit more exploring. Our nights were spent gathering around the campfire, eating campfire popcorn and marshmellows and sharing stories. Matt was stoked to have James as a surfing and ... read more

Oceania » Australia » South Australia » Fowlers Bay April 23rd 2013

What an amazing view, the small town of Fowlers Bay on one side, dwarfed by the massive sandhills on the other and here it is that we set up camp at the Fowlers Bay Caravan Park. We try our hand at fishing off the jetty but there's no fish in the ocean so we resort to just jumping off the jetty before heading back to the park for our first shower in 10 days (but who's counting)! Before packing up we head for a stroll (read as leg killing max heart rate climb) up the dunes, for a spot of early morning photography and sand boarding. Body boards make reasonable sand boards but do suffer some delamination issues! Then the pack-up routine and jump in the old bus to head further west.... read more

After several hours on the blacktop and a few corrugations we arrived at Cactus Beach and set up camp with Brendo, Raquel, Steve & JT, Chelsea and kids. The boys are excited about the surf, the girls are excited that their is an actual toilet here! The boy's eagerly await sunrise, alarms are set and boards are packed and ready - Caves here we come!! Whilst the boys hit the surf the girls and I enjoyed a relaxing morning at camp before heading over to watch the action at Caves from the amazing vantage of Caves Point. Time to test my skills as a surf photographer, first mission, photograph the right guys! We then enjoyed an afternoon spent swimming, bashing in the waves, exploring the rock pools and collecting shells. So the plan was good...sneak out ... read more

Oceania » Australia » South Australia » Streaky Bay April 18th 2013

We got up early, packed up and headed toward our first planned destination, Pt Brown. (A beach camp 20km from Smoky Bay). Kate, AC, Lori and Riley along with Brett, Anna, Brooke and Amber awaited our arrival after setting up and securing our favourite camp spot. Yippee!! We are on holiday at last and looking forward to spending some time with great friends at the awesome spot. The end of the day saw us all gather together with a drink in hand to watch the beautiful sunset over the point, and so our evening ritual began. On day 1 together all four families loaded into our cars and headed for Smoky Bay, a small town with a beautiful calm beach. We launched the tinnie for the keen fishermen along with two kayaks to attempt to catch ... read more

Oceania » Australia » South Australia » Port Augusta April 14th 2013

After a late getaway and long afternoon spent on the road, the sun began to set as we headed through Port Augusta, so that is where we decided to stay. The girls made use of the caravan park pool while we set up for our first night in the van. Odyssey Issue No. 1 - Water pump in van not working!
