After twelve days out bush we sure are ready for a shower, caravan restock and unfortunately a big pile of washing waiting to be done. We scrub up and head out to the local pub with the Gordon family for a delicious meal, after so much seafood we are all craving some meat, and devour our food. We also have to make a big decision ($1200 for the family), to swim with the whale sharks or not? The Gordon’s are going and we can’t resist, so we make the booking, get packed and excitedly go to bed to await the adventures that the day ahead are sure to bring. We meet at the diving store at 7.30am, get fitted for wetsuits and flippers and then jump on the bus to take our group to the boat. ... read more

Now this is more like it, secluded campsite on the beach and protected turquoise waters to swim in. We race against the setting sun to set up camp and to go for a quick dip before night falls. Best of all we have a full week to explore and enjoy. Night one sees the rain fall and the cloud filled sky continue to drop rain for the entire next day, oh well, a quiet day in the van for us all! We are so happy to wake to clear blue skies the next morning and the opportunity to explore this beautiful place. We luck in with a morning catch of squid straight off of the beach as a big school swim close to shore. The ocean seems to provide us with a mixed seafood banquet, each ... read more

After a quick food and fuel stop in Carnarvon, we are following the white lines again and are all keen to get to Warroora Station located on the Ningaloo Reef for our next stop. We arrive late so we pull into Steven’s Camp to set up for the night. A camp hidden behind the sand hills not right on the beach! I’m not sure that we can settle for this after the high standards set by Red Bluff. So we spend the next day driving up and down the cost conducting campsite inspections to find our ultimate camp on the beach. We luck in with Maggie’s Beach and so we pack up once again and make the move. Matt's Say: Whilst this campsite selection process was taking place the surf was cracking...4-6ft of swell and light ... read more

We were all looking forward to our time at Red Bluff after it had proven to be one of our most popular stops on our last trip and it sure did not disappoint. We lucked in with the most perfect campsite right on the beach, had several days of great surf, saw lots of marine life, caught lots of fish and enjoyed beautiful clear sunny days. What more could you ask for? How about a pod of whales swimming by close to shore just as you are setting up your camp? The girls and I enjoy climbing down the bluff to sit in one of the lagoon pools right on the verge of the surf break, providing a spectacular view of the surfing as well as a protected swimming spot. The girls enjoy collecting cowrie shells ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » Carnarvon June 7th 2013

We pull into Carnarvon, the town that supplies a majority of Western Australia’s fruit and vegetables. This was a great place to clean up and stock up on supplies. It was amazing to drive around and see the vast fruit and vegetable plantations as far as the eye could see. The park had a jumping castle setup also! Fuel, food, beer, wine, bait...check. Now to the Bluff...yeah baby!... read more

We’re sure the booklet said white sandy beaches?? Or was it tidal mud flat?? Oh well, can’t really complain, still a beach front camp with a fantastic view of the sunset. A quick overnight stay, morning pack up and we are in the car again.... read more

Our next destination, Francois Person National Park lies in the World Heritage listed area of Shark Bay. A 40km 4WD track takes us through a variety of road ways from sandy tracks to vast gypsum pans (birridas). It was an exciting journey as tyres were deflated ready to navigate our heavy load of car and caravan into the park. One bogging and digging out, some more windy tracks and lots of bumps later we arrive at the Bottle Bay campground. The Francois Peron National Park brochure promises diverse and abundant marine life and although we were at first skeptical it sure did not disappoint. We saw whales, sharks, manta rays, dugongs, turtles, crabs, fish etc, etc. The tinnie finally got wet again and ensured that some exciting fishing adventures unfolded. There were so many fish to ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » Kalbarri June 2nd 2013

Every time we get in the car to head north we are so hopeful for less rain, sunnier weather and warmer water, Kalbarri meets two of these criteria, no rain and slightly warmer ocean but still cold, down to two degrees overnight! The kids don’t care about the weather because behold they have free wifi (yes free internet) at the caravan park. We still manage to drag the kids away from the ipads to check out the sights and sounds of Kalbarri. Firstly we’re off to Jake’s Point, a reef break where the waves break along the point and the girls and I can get an up close view of the action. Matt's Say: Jake's is like Blacks but there is dry rock right in front of you! There is definitely 2 takeoff points...the local crew ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » Geraldton May 30th 2013

From Perth we decide to head for Coronation Beach camping ground just north of Geraldton and arrive at the turn off at about 5pm to find a “Campground Full” sign greeting us...ahhh that wasn't in the plan. We turn back and head south (feels very wrong) toward Geraldton and stay at Drummond Cove for yet another rainy day. Man we gotta get north away from winter!... read more

A hive of morning activity unfolds as we pack up our little Cottesloe Chalet, repack the van, buy food, get new tires for the van and the list goes on, but eventually we were back in the Prado and on the road again. We decide to stay at Sandy Cape near Jurien Bay and meet up with the Gordon family again. The girls enjoy a snorkel and sand boarding in this scenic bay, but alas, the forecast of heavy overnight keeps us moving north.... read more
