Life's Simple Pleasures (LSP) "... is to travel with a group of kakis whom you are comfortable with." "... is to laugh at each other's silly behaviours and jokes on the road." "... is to look after one another in a foreign land." "... is to treat your travel kakis with respect." "Above all, LSP is to enjoy the company of your kakis when the destination ahead of you is imperfect." Food was ok as I showed J and M to my favourite Wan Ton Mee stall at Sungei Wang Complex for breakfast. For M, this was going to be the start of his Wan Ton Mee adventure in KL for the next 2 days. M was often hungry, having full meals throughout the day. One moment, he was having his A & W meal in ... read more

I'm "Impressed"! It was 9pm when our rail (real) nightmare started on 16th May 08 @ Tanjong Pagar Railway Station. As soon as we passed through the Malaysian Customs, we realised that our passports were not stamped. Seeking clarifications from the unsmiling Mr Custom Officer was futile as he was more engrossed in his newspapers than performing his duties. He managed an unconvincing "No" before returning back to his papers. Reassurance instead came from a Singaporean family whom we spoke to. The family was also taking the train to Malaysia for the first time. Their passports too were not stamped. "If that's how things work at the Malaysian Customs at Tanjong Pagar, I'm really impressed!" We were relegated to the air-con second class cabin as we did not managed to secure the sleeper cabin tickets. It ... read more

As Time Goes By Three of us gathered at Secret Garden this evening to celebrate C's belated birthday. Friends from school since 2002, we are coming close to our 6th year of friendship. I have so "many" friends left from my childhood legacy. Its only natural to put in more effort for the "friends" that have accompanied me this far. B told me that he went there before and food was alright for the price he paid. We decided to give it a shot. Afterall, it's always great to try out new places to eat in our crowded island. Located about 10 minutes walk from Bugis Station, the food was relatively ok for the price but the quiet ambience quickly made up for the whatever shortcomings in the food. Without a doubt, the night passed away ... read more

The Langkawi Cable Car Experience turned out to be one of the highlights of the trip for 4 of us. We left our resort early only to be greeted by hoards of crowds at the Cable Car Station. I guess it was a public holiday in Malaysia today. The waiting time was about 30 minutes before we boarded our car. At times, it was quite steep as it made its ascend towards Mount Mat Cinang, about 652m above sea level. Once the cable car reaches the summit, we were greeted by a mist of clouds and a magnificent view of the "Blue Mountains". It was a cool way to escape from the scorching tropical heat. As I lay on the beach overlooking the coconut trees in the afternoon, there was a sense of inner peace within ... read more

Our Langkawi Story (19 - 22 March 2008) Our March 08 vacation was memorable as it was the first time I'm travelling with my best friend of 16 years for an extended period of time. Together with G and C, we planned our vacation way ahead in January when Silk Air was offering her $98 air fare promotion. Our flight to Langkawi Island took longer than usual today due to a delay in taking off @ Changi Airport. The flight itself was comfortable. However, given the short flight, there was a mad rush for the stewardess to quickly serve and remove the food trays onboard. Touching down @ the near empty Langkawi International Airport was happy as "Welcome to Langkawi Geopark" greeted the 4 of us. It was a status accorded by UNESCO for recognising the ... read more

This was my first time @ 木船民歌餐厅. Located at Carpenters Street, this was just minutes from the Settlers Cafe which we went two days ago. I last step into a 民歌餐厅 about 10 years ago @ 爱琴海 in Marina Square. I couldn't recall what made me stopped going or started to visit 民歌餐厅 again. Probably I was just trying to relive some of the 新谣 memories that accompanied me while growing up. Or perhaps, I just wanted to follow what J wrote on her facebook ~ to enjoy life while you can. Or probably, I wanted a change of environment on Friday evenings. No more rowdy places for me. Rather, a place where I could chill out and listen to my favourite songs. True enough, it was a lovely place. We were kind of lucky on ... read more

Lunar New Year ~ a "一年一次" AFFAIR Chinese New Year in Singapore this year was a long holiday for me. A full 4.5 days of complete rest without compromising any of my precious Annual Leave. As I welcome another week of reality, the only thing I’m looking forward for now is our impending Langkawi trip during the Good Friday Holidays. No more home visiting for me this year so I’m spared of the “When are you getting married” syndrome. My uncle who came by this evening did ask me, “How’s your Japan trip? Must be very expensive right?” I only managed a weak smile and said “还好啦” before sneaking off for my first tennis practice in my 28 years of existence on earth. The reunion dinner itself was relatively standard steamboat fare but it was good ... read more

The Great Cambodian trip that kickstart the new year 2008 will certainly set greater heights for the better things to come for the rest of the year As the morning sky greeted me on my final day at the BeQuest Guesthouse, I knew that my 6 Day trip to Cambodia has almost come to an end. This morning, like most other mornings, H woke up later than me. After a quick wash up, we proceeded to the nearby coffee place for our daily caffeine fix. Somehow, I just did not have the appetite to eat anything this morning. Perhaps, I was sad that I would be leaving for Singapore in 2 hours' time. Or perhaps I had a bit too much the previous evening. Or perhaps...... Anyway, it was sad saying goodbye to Cambodia and H. ... read more

We spent 2 days at the huge Angkor Archaeological Park marvelling at the Temples of Angkor. Located about 20 minutes tuk tuk drive from Siem Reap, the entry fees for a 3 Day Pass (there's only either 1 or 3 Day Pass to choose from) was a killer, a whopping US$40 (S$57). Our driver would drop us at the various temple sites while giving us ample time to explore the temple compounds. H would always try his best to share his knowledge of the various bas beliefs and symbolisation of the sculptures and temples. Even though he claimed that he was not being a good guide at times, in my own eyes, "He was the best!" My understanding of the temples was reinforced after his explanation, after reading through the Pirated Lonely Planet which I bought ... read more

I’ve promised Mr Nou Savuth that I would be featuring his massage parlour in one of my entries for Siem Reap. For this was no ordinary massage parlour.... By modern standards, the decor is relatively run down compared to the many "normal" massage parlours in the vicinity. The enclosure is dimly litted with no ambience lighting nor air-conditioning to speak of. What makes this place, the Siem Reap Massage stands out is that it is run by a group of visually impaired personnel who are well trained in both foot and body massages. Even though they have difficulties with their sight, they are determined to earn their own keep with their bare hands. I had the opportunity to try both the foot and full body massage costing US$5 for a one hour session. The body massage ... read more
