Day 1 (10th July 2005) If there was something for me to acclaim about during my 4 years in University, it has to be my minor contribution in 2 overseas community service projects in Thailand. I am privileged to be given the opportunity to serve the community twice in Dec 2004 and the more recent Project Rakchuay aka Love Help in July 2005 . 16 of us were into this expedition - 5 guys and 11 gals to make some improvements for the drainage systems for the Karen Hill Tribe in Mae Wang, Chiang Mai. Preparation for the expedition started early in March 2005 to raise funds for the project involving the sale of T-shirts, newspaper collecting at AMK and car washing at Bedok Central. Months of preparation brought us to the afternoon of 10th July ... read more

Hotel Puri and Beyond, Serenity in the heart of beautiful Melaka "Selamat Datang! Welcome to the award-winning Hotel Puri in the heart of Historic Melaka! Finally, we got a chance to stay in this beautifully-restored hotel. I had to admit that this was one of the best hotel stays I had with lots of charm and character. Forget about the 4 or 5 stars hotel in the vicinity. If there was one place that you should stay while in Melaka, Hotel Puri was it. Of course, for the budget conscious, the neighboring Baba House made an excellent alternative with rates 50% of what we were paying at Puri. Both hotels are situated along the historic Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock (Lao Jie - Old Street), next the Baba and Nyona Museum - also another gem ... read more

Our coach bus departed from Lavender Bus Station at 8am on our way to Melaka, an idyllic town about 4 hours journey from Singapore. Clare, Chucky and I had decided to spend our 3D2N long weekend in the historical town. It was our second trip into the sleepy state so we were kind of expecting what she had to offer. Nevertheless, the small historic town had proven itself to be attractive to inject a few suprises each time we visited. I love to stay at one of the many boutique hotels along Jonkers Street to “smell” the history of the place in a peaceful setting. This was lacking in the urbanized republic that we came from. We were greeted by the brand new Melaka Sentral Bus Terminal at the northern suburbs as the bus pull over ... read more

Perth, Western Australia 26th July 2004 - 5th August 2004 My first encounter in a western country occurred some 5 years back. S and I had just completed our Year 2 in the University and decided it was time to reward ourselves with a trip to Australia. I still remembered vividly that in order to cut costs, we took a Malaysia Airline flight to Kuala Lumpur before flying south to Perth. At $692, the price of the air ticket was not cheap in today’s standards considering that Tiger Airways and Jetstar are now offering direct flights to the same destination @ rock bottom prices. However, in those days when the Sin-Perth route were dominated by Qantas and Singapore Airlines, $692 was already a bargain. The advent of budget carriers had certainly made traveling much more affordable ... read more

“SHOP N SAVE” in Bangkok Shopping and eating were oftened touted as the top agendas for most tourists in bustling Bangkok. Our Asia Hotel was located 1 stop away from the majestic Mah Boon Kroong (MBK) Shopping Complex and a few stops to the Chatuchak Weekend Market in the northern suburbs. This was the age where money is everything and in Bangkok you could probably do this at a fraction of the prices back home. It was no wonder that the girls attempted a 2 day “bloodshed” at Chatuchak Market. I was there for ½ a day and was defeated by the scorching heat and the never ending crowds. The 3 of us took a sky train to Saphan Taksin before transferring to the River Boat to bring us to the Grand Palace compound. It was ... read more

Journey to the Land of Smiles (25 - 29 December 2003) Part 1: Inspection Report 7 of us went to Bangkok during Christmas 2 years ago. It happened at the time when budget carriers were unheard of in Singapore. The cheapest flight then operated on graveyard hours by SAS. We were pushed all the way to the late 10.10pm flight on Christmas Day 2003. It was simply filled to the brim of eager Singaporeans intending to make a "bloodshed" in Bangkok. The Cheapest Flight (Scandinavian Airlines) The cheapest option didn't mean lousy. At least, SAS had proven that. Ok the ang moh stewardess who served us was clearly aging, the baguette served on board is well uninteresting. But at least there was edible food & we had our personal inflight entertainment within our own comfort ... read more
