Fortunately, Udon Thani offered otherwise This is one place I was thinking of going for quite sometime. Ever since chatting with Nisa, my favourite massager @ Phuket, I was curious of her hometown in northeastern Thailand. We were the only flight that landed at the Udon Thani International Airport today. Tourism is a slow & primitive business in this part of the world. However, thanks to Tiger Airways, it is now connected directly to Singapore 3 times a week. Its only link to the outside world for now. Most of the fellow passengers were the Thai workers returning home. The other Singaporeans we could identify were a few uncles going to the chicken farms. Other than that, most Singaporeans are skipping this destination altogether. The meaning of “Touristy” = Things are more expensive, English is widely ... read more

The time is 5.12am and 1 year on, I am back again at the Budget Terminal awaiting for our 6.45am flight to Udon Thani. Friends have been asking me what to expect from there, I won’t know for sure. It’s really a whole new world out there. Armed with a copy of Lonely Planet, we are going there with an open mind. Hopefully, by the end of this trip, my Thai vocabulary would have improved. And hopefully, if everything goes as planned, this could be the first of the 3 exotic trips to close for the year 2007. More tom yam to come in the coming days. I can’t wait….. For now, goodbye Singapore and welcome to the land of smiles in 4 hours’ time. ... read more

Arguably One of the Better Local Musical in Recent Times It was a night of nostalgia & musical feast for the 600 audiences who packed the Drama Centre Theatre to the brim last evening. For the kids who grew up in the early 80s, 新谣 Xin Yao was a familiar name for all. 《天冷就回来》, If There Are Seasons ~ the latest musical to hit the local theatre brought back beautiful memories for most. Songs they grew up with, and songs they could relate to as a kid. 《天冷就回来》, If There Are Seasons ~ did not have a solid story plot. What gave the show a boost were the casts immaculate singing that managed to fill in the whatever imperfections. The 3 hours musical succeeded in portraying a serious note revolving around dreams, love and friendship. However, ... read more

A Tribute to Singapore's 42nd Birthday Thursday, 9 August 2007 Young NTUC Celebrates - The Largest Human Flag in Singapore I believe lateness is an incurable contagious (read: more deadly than SARS) disease that is inherent in some fellow Singaporeans. Probably, letting the whole world wait for them makes them feel shiok. Of course, not to mention those who left the venue right after they collected their goody bags. This aside, it was still memorable and a unique way to celebrate the nation’s birthday. If there were any consolations of not having the tickets to catch this year's NDP live, forming part of the human flag contingent at Padang was just as good. J and I arrived at the Padang shortly after 3pm after a hearty lunch at Central. Walking from Clarke Quay to the Padang ... read more

In conjunction with the National Day celebrations, the author is pleased to present places of interest within his home country, Singapore, based on his recent encounters 21st July 2007 ~ My Sentosa Diary before the IR 12pm ~ The rain itself did not dampen our spirits this afternoon as we managed to secure a parking space beneath the Beach Station while waiting for the rain to stop. Prior to that, we took a beach tram to reece our picnic grounds at Siloso Beach. 12.10pm ~ It was time to fuel ourselves with some nasi lemak courtesy of Golden Shoe Car Park before the strenuous activities in the afternoon. 12.50pm ~ In the meantime, while waiting for the last bit of rain to clear, we kept ourselves busy with the chua dai di much to the ... read more

National Day Rehearsal @ Marina Bay - 7th July 07 There’s No Place I’d Rather Be….Even though I’ve roamed the world, it’s still my home I loved to see…. "For me, the proudest moment of every National Day Parade is always after the arrival of the President when the National Athem, Majulah Singapura is played. With the huge Singapore Flag hovering above us, it always feel good to be a true blue Singaporean standing at the spectator gallery. This year Kit Chan’s Theme Song,“There’s No Place I’d Rather Be” simply sums up the sentiments of everybody present at the rehearsal today. At the end of the day, Singapore is still a “fine” place to live in despite the numerous complains day in day out." This was how it begun 7th July 2007 ~ Clare and I ... read more

The following has got no relevance to travelling. It was an entry residing in his old blog which the writer had penned down days after leaving his first job in September 2006. Wednesday, September 06, 2006 Looking beyond dreams It was my last day with the travel agency yesterday after nearing 2 months into the job. I was glad to be able to leave with a light heart having finished my last 2 assignments - booking the Hainan Island tickets for 11 customers and completed a tour briefing on Perth with a regular customer (my first and FINAL attempt). 2 months into the job, I was tired but happy. Tired of answering calls and attending to strange customers asking silly questions. And tired of bluffing my way through in order to close sales. And happy that ... read more

17th May 2007 would make my Day! I was pleased to see my contribution being published on page 17 of “我报” aka “My Paper” this morning, 17th May 2007. It briefly captured the wonderful experiences of our Taiwan trips in 2005. Just in case if you missed out today’s issue, here it goes. "It was love at first sight when my sister and I visited Taipei last year. There was no language barrier and the colourful night markets are a delight to visit. I was amazed by the Taiwanese level of commitment to care for the environment. Garbage is separated and the supermarkets do not give out plastic bags to encourage shoppers to use less of it. When it comes to public transportation, people queue up in an orderly fashion during rush hours to make boarding ... read more

Sakura Memories ~ Previously Unreleased Date submitted to "My Paper": 11th June 2007 Date published: Thursday, 12th July 2007 In this final instalment to "My Paper", I touched on my sakura experiences and some observations pertaining to the good habits of fellow Japanese. It took a month before this submission went "public" this morning and I am happy to share my experiences with you. What appears is the original submission that went through some editing before seeing the light of the day. "An hour by train from busy Tokyo brought us to the charming, peaceful town of Odawara. Famed for its famous Castle, this place is extremely lovely every spring when the sakuras within the castle grounds are in full bloom. And for the next 2 weeks, fellow Japanese would gather their picnic mats under ... read more
