Home visiting took centrestage this Chinese New Year as we went from one home to another during the past 15 days. Some of the homes belonged to my ex-colleagues from Kentucky who graciously welcomed us to their mini sanctuaries. There were opportunities for me to mingle with some of my friends whom I seldom had an opportunity to sit down and have a proper conversation during my time at the old place. I was pleasantly suprised to be able to strike a strong conversation with T. After visiting his place, I was certainly impressed at how down to earth and unassuming he and his siblings were. The moment I stepped into his Bukit Panjang flat, there was this comfortable feeling of going Home which I couldn't describe. Certainly, like all cancerians, I enjoyed going back to ... read more

Not sure about the rest, but here are my personal picks Best Hotelier Experience: Toyoko Inn Hakodate Daimon. "Plush, clean, comfortable, super single beds with fully equipped fresheners. Room rates came with complimentary breakfast, dinner, free internet access and free flow of coffee at the reception. For SGD55 per person a night, the price and location is hard to beat in expensive Japan." Best Railway Experience: Tokyo to Hachinohe (en-route to Hokkaido). "The reliable Shinkansen whisked through the painless 631km journey in a matter of 3 hours. The same distance between Singapore and Penang would otherwise take a whopping 18 hours by the "Express Trains" of the notorious Keretapi Tanah Melayu Behad (KTMB) aka the state Railway of Malaysia." Best City Experience: Wide boulevards and plenty of open spac... read more

Asia » Japan » Mt Fuji December 31st 2008

The weather was still as cold as ever as we spent our final 2 days in Yokohama city and Hakone (Mount Fuji). Better luck awaited us this time round as we caught a much clearer glimpse of the Fuji Mountain. For most Japanese, staying home to welcome the New Year meant watching the “Red-White Singing Competition” on NHK TV and eating the traditional soba at the stroke of 12 midnight to symbolize longevity. A trip to the temple in the early hours of 1st January 2009 is a "must-do" to pray for good luck, good health and good career in 2009. While the temple was overflowing with worshippers, Japanese should pride themselves for being orderly and well-behaved. As we looked back for the past 12 days, it was certainly another "economic miracle" as we tried ways ... read more

Day 9 ~ December 29, 2008 The reality of the 10 hours train journey from Sapporo to Yokohama did not hit us hard today. The comfortable trains were clean and the train arrived and departed on time at major interchanges. Starting early in the morning and after 4 transfers, it was night-time by the time we reached Yokohama Station. Earlier today, it was an emotional goodbye for M as he tried to hold back his tears when seeing us off @ Sapporo Station. 8.37pm ~ We met up with Y and R sans at the Kita (North) gate of the sprawling Yokohama station after experiencing some difficulties figuring our way through the correct gates. Lugging our heavy luggage to R's place, this was going to be our final 3 nights before we returned home to Singapore ... read more

Saturday, 27 December 2008 Another freezing day awaited us this morning as we toured the farm houses of the Hokkaido University (北海道大学). The snow-capped buildings and chimneys reminded us of those structures found in Europe. Lunch was a simple affair at a tiny ramen store near Sapporo station as recommended by M. As usual, the noodles did not disappoint in terms of quality and quantity. After lunch, we ventured our way to the Ishiya Chocolate Factory (白色恋人) located at the western suburbs of the city. The factory building and the open spaces were attractions of their own. It was an added bonus that the factory grounds were opened to the public free of charge even though a fee must be paid to witness the chocolate making process. While the chocolates might not taste out of this ... read more

Friday, 26th December 2008, Sapporo "Welcome to Sapporo" said the big signboard as we came out of JR Sapporo Station. Earlier, we had baded goodbye to Mr Mori and Muku at Niseko Resort before continuing our 2 hour train journey to Sapporo. It wasn't difficult to fall in love with Japan's fifth largest city (1东京,2横槟,3大阪,4名古屋 and 5札幌). The well-planned city have what everything Tokyo has to offer. Yet, it have what most major Japanese cities are lacking ~ the crowds. It never get too crowded in Sapporo even during the rush hours. With 3 subway lines criss-crossing the city, it was easy to move around in this relaxed city. I loved their weekends as the one-day subway ticket (donni chika kippu) costs only 500 yen for unlimited travel. On other days, the same ticket was 800 ... read more

25th December 2008 ~ Hirafu Village, Hokkaido Christmas last year was special for us as we spent our time at the slopes of the Hirafu Village where the Niseko Ski Resort was located. For a while, we thought we were in some ski resorts in Europe as the staffs managing Niseko were mainly non-Japanese speaking. Even our lodge owner, Mr Mori spoke excellent English due to his many years of working experience in MNCs. After his retirement, he and his wife decided to move to Niseko and operate a lodge out of his home to welcome visitors from the world. Mr Mori had a wonderful dog, Muku. In no time, Muku became our new found friend, who would wag his tail everytime we passed by the entrance. Spending time with Muku certainly helped to alleviate some ... read more

23rd December 2008 ~ Tokyo to Hokkaido It took us about 6 hours by train from Tokyo to Hakodate. Starting at 8.56am, our day was almost gone when we finally reached Hakodate Station at 3pm in the afternoon. There were no major complains as the trains were clean and on schedule. Light snow greeted us as we marched out from the train station this afternoon which sent a smile on everybody’s faces. Afterall, it was not an everyday affair that we could see snow falling from the skies before our eyes. We managed to reach the Toyoko Inn Hotel at 3.40pm but was told to hang around in the lobby as the “standard check-in time was 4pm.” Armed with discount coupons which we tore from the train magazine, we managed to slice off yet another 1,000 ... read more

Sunday, 21st December 2008 I was wide awake at 3.10am this morning to be on time at Changi Airport to catch my North West flight to Tokyo at 6am. Japan was a relatively familiar territory for me having done that a year ago. Yet, this trip was beset with uncertainty because we were not sure if it was easy to explore the wild north of Hokkaido by rail or whether our bodies could withstand the harsh wintry winds from Siberia. Fortunately, transport links across Japan were developed and we have packed enough clothing for this trip to keep ourselves warm. And thanks to our Japan Rail Pass, it was relatively fuss free and inexpensive to travel to Hokkaido from Tokyo. Service standards had improved for North West Airline compared to the same flight we took a ... read more

Rubber Band Rocks It was a star studded affair last Saturday evening at a downtown hotel in Orchard as we “anticipated” for our company’s dinner and dance. “Anticipated” was not a strong word. Afterall, it was "N" years ago when the last dinner and dance took place. I’m not sure why there was much anticipation and excitement when we first heard that there was going to be one this time round. At least for me, there was never that same level of enthusiasm in my previous company’s dinner and dance. Certainly, most people in the company were looking forward as it was not within the living memory when the last was held. (Lesson learnt: Never have an annual dinner and dance in the company. Have it once in many years.) Probably, we had to pay $10 ... read more
