My Journey Starts Here The North West Airline flight touched down Changi Airport slightly after 2am today, 16th April after a tortuous 7 hr flight from Tokyo. My seat was giving me problems. I was unable to recline it to a more comfortable position no matter how hard I played with the switch. It couldn’t help that the kids in front were making hell a lot of noise on the plane. Anyway, surviving the 10 day Japan trip without the convenience of a package tour was great. As a first-timer, it was appropriate to visit places within the tourist track ~ Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto and Yokohama quickly came into mind. These cities have well developed infrastructure so getting around with the Japan Rail Pass was relatively easy and inexpensive. Even so, there were a few ... read more

Gearing up for the 10 Day Trip ~ Before we set off The Air Tickets Preparing for the 10 Day Central Japan Trip started late last year when we first booked our air tickets online. Back then, Northwest Airlines was having their $399 promotion which flew direct to Tokyo Narita Airport. The timing was excellent. An early morning flight departing Changi at 6.20am and a late evening flight from Tokyo. The offer was simply too irresistable to be missed. Rail Pass We purchased the 7 Day Japan Rail Pass at $371 which was good enough for the bullet train rides between Tokyo and Osaka. We were glad that the pass was valid for airport train transfers and JR railway transport within Tokyo and Osaka. Worth the money invested! Accomodation We will be staying 3 nites ... read more

We Sing Our Songs Venue: National (aka Kallang) Stadium Date: Saturday, 24th Mar 2007, 7 - 10pm This is really going to be my final visit to the National Stadium before it is razed completely apart. Visiting the National Icon for the very last time was indeed a heartwarming experience. About 5,000 of us had gathered eagerly for its finale concert "We Sing Our Songs". Familiar songs that were of a distant memory, that we grew up with, were played again and again. The audience sitting around us were singing loudly. It was a natural human instinct to blend in with the crowds. We enjoyed ourselves despite the minor rain. And of course, it was an honour to participate in the Kallang Wave for the last time! As a child, I did not have many memories ... read more

The Finale Our final day in Kuala Lumpur. After a quick breakfast, Mr Lee drove us to Putra Jaya - the new administrative capital that houses the impressive Mosque and the Prime Minister Office building (reminds me of the Taj Mahal in India). A good afternoon was spent driving around and admiring the buildings and bridges in the vicinity. The rest of the day was spent roaming in the city centre inKL Times Square and its immeditate vicinity in Bukit Bintang. It was fun taking the cute KL Monorail that reminds us of the new Sentosa Express. Our last dinner was at this nice restaurant in the suburbs with a nice ambience. Unfortunately, the seemingly lack lustre service was a real turn-off. Overall, these 4 days have been eventful for me as we covered areas beyond ... read more

We didn’t wake up early today. Afterall, our room rate doesn’t come with the breakfast. Instead, breakfast was at this local coffee shop opposite the hotel. I remembered that my sis and I had the same food 2 years back. Food tasted great at modest prices. After grabbing a couple of boxes of tau sa piah at the market, it was time to say goodbye to GeorgeTown, to hit the North South Highway again back to Kuala Lumpur. On our way, we stopped by Penang’s Esplanade to take in the sights of Fort Cornwallis and the Clock Tower before embarking on the ferry to cross over to mainland Malaysia (Chin Yoong’s car included). If there’s one minor regret for me, it must be missing Penang Hill for the 2nd time. On a brighter note, grateful that ... read more

Day 2 ~ 30th December 2006 We left CY’s house early today to kick off our 2D 1N trip to Penang. On our way, we picked up R at her house close to the Mine’s Wonderland in KL suburbs. Her Dalmatian struck me - so cute & adorable and I bet this was the first time I saw the breed before my very eyes! Anyway, it was breakfast time at this Dim Sum shop at Cheras. Popular among the locals, we only managed to find a table after some difficulties. After breakfast, the journey continued to Tapah, a popular rest station along the North South Highway. Long famous for its sweet guavas, we bought some but they weren’t as nice as the samples we tasted. On a brighter note, I found the restroom at Tapah to ... read more

Beyond our shores for the new year (29th December to 2 January 2007) A and I met up after my work for our coach journey to Kuala Lumpur at 7pm on 29th December. I was planning to drop whatever I was doing at 5.30pm sharp to grab a quick dinner before boarding the coach at Golden Mile. As luck would have it, my VP came by at 4.50pm, dashing all my travel plans. To cut the story short, I was held up until 6.10pm before changing out of my office gear and dashing across the road to meet A. I was supposed to collect my coach tickets at 6.30pm! My VP was still around and I had to tell her that I need to rush to Malaysia in order to free myself from the office. Anyway, ... read more

Adding on to my collection of Melaka was this family trip last Christmas. Ok, it took quite a while for me to pen this entry partly because most of my experiences were not new (read: old). And of course, so much had happened at work that I was simply too tired to update and maintain this blog space. Only managed to find time to do it this long lunar New Year holidays while clearing my annual leave. Basically, the experience was similar to previous trip partly because we stayed at the same hotel (Puri), ate the same food (laksa, cendol and Kenny Roasters chicken) and visited the same old places (Jonkers Street, St Paul's Hill etc). Update: another new shopping mall has opened recently which gave the old Mahkota Parade Shopping Mall a run for their ... read more

Everyone has their own definition of an ideal vacation. For me, finding my comfortable travel kakis is important because the frequency has to be set “right” from the beginning. “Accomodating” is important to minimize conflicts as a result of differing expectations. “I am very accommodating” - the catch phrase being used by S over and over again for the past 4 days. How true! It was “N” years ago when I discovered the joy of traveling with a church friend to a week’s long holiday to Malaysia. While we no longer keep in contact with each other, I’m thankful that he opened my doors to a great travel experience that after so many years, my interests to keep discovering have not eroded the least bit. It was a great Phuket experience for all of us. To ... read more

Welcome to Thailand's largest Island, Phuket Our silkair flight landed safely at Phuket International Airport at 2.05pm today. Thank god, there weren’t long queues at the custom area. In less than 20 minutes, we were out of the airport where our transfer to Patong Beach was waiting for us patiently at the arrival hall. It was another hour before we reached our hotel, Royal Paradise situated amidst the hustle and bustle of the Patong Beach area. Some of our observations upon arrival: "Preliminary contact with the local people showed that in terms of friendliness, they were not so forthcoming compared to their Bangkok and Chiang Mai counterparts." "Years of contacts with tourists enabled many to master the English Language. Most of the signboards in the Patong Area are in English and there are no Thai addresses ... read more

Bargain hard. Patong beach is worse than Chatuchak in many ways. The "opening" price is always very high. Do quote them a ridiculous price and be rewarded.
