Today's post may come from Laos, but it concerns my time in Northern Thailand. I have been neglecting this blog as of late, too concerned with street food and waterfalls to seek out time at an internet cafe. There is much to update, and I must start with my trek in the jungles near Pai, Thailand this last week. We ended up booking with a guy named "Tony"--obviously his English name, but easy to remember. Tony was talkative, outgoing, and not shy about divulging personal information. He assured us that this trek was in a "non-touristed" area. This seems to be a hot word among the trekking circuit--every poster we encountered advertised its "non-touristed" route, and we began to wonder whether they weren't stretching the truth there...at any rate, the trek looked decent, it was in ... read more

Hello from Thailand! We last left you just before we set off for our 3 day jungle trek, so let's begin there. Firstly, we headed to the elephant camp for an hour elephant ride, the treatment of the elephants was a little controversial (as is the treatment of most of the animals used for tourists pleasure out here) and on that basis Mat, and a few others, decided to walk behind as the remainder of the group rode on. Being on an elephant is a much more pleasurable experience than being on a camel! It was good fun but I cringed every time the tour guide whacked the elephant over the head with a metal hook attached to the end of a wooden pole, can't say I enjoyed that bit. Post casual elephant ride the trekking ... read more

It was a long day to get from Bangkok to Pai. We started out at 6.30pm from Shirley’s house who drove us to the bus station in Bangkok - with over 100 departure points it took us a little while to find the right place! We boarded a first class air con bus for the 10-hour journey up to Chiang Mai. We were immediately given some water, juice and 2 cakes each. The music went of and lights went out, with fully reclining seats we managed to sleep for most of the journey though Mark was more comfortable sitting upright he did manage to sleep. Around the 5am mark about an hour outside of Chiang Mai, we were given ice coffee in a carton and something else to eat. Once at Chiang Mai we ignored all ... read more

Pai - Hippy Hang Out Leaving Chang Mai by minibus was an easy and beautiful journey. Jungle and rubber plantations lined the winding route, and it was noticeably cooler the higher up we went. The route up to Pai took several hours and involved 261 hair pin bends. After the first 100 or so our fellow bus members were all feeling a little ropey and when asked if we wanted to stop for lunch there were no takers. Arriving in Pai a few days behind Julia and Simone, we had received word that we needed to stay by the river and it wasn't long before we had checked into a little rustic riverside bungalow. Once settled Steve and Guy set off for a few cold Chang's and returned to enjoy them while watching the setting sun ... read more

White water rafting was awesome. We left Sunday morning with a group of 30 others. It was a slow start getting everyone organised and into their safety gear. We made the 1 hour trip to our starting point by way of an openbacked ute and even the fresh air couldn't stop me from feeling the effects of the 600 or so curves. Luckily, I felt much better once I got out of the ute and onto solid ground. Just as we were about to climb aboard our rafts it started to rain. Nothing was going to put a dampener on our trip so we just paddled harder to keep warm and waited for the sun to come back out. The rain didn't last long and soon enough the sun was beating down making us hot in ... read more

Pai, a small town nestled into the mountains of north western Thailand. Who would think a place with such an unassuming name could be so cool? As soon as we got off the bus from Chiang Mai I realised Pai was one of my favourite places. It just has that vibe, you know its the vibe of the thing? So on our mini van journey through the twisty turny mountain roads Chloe and I met Marcel, a fellow traveller from Holland who we ended up hangin out with for most of our time in Pai. He had actually recently come from some time in Australia and even visited Perth so he was very excited to fine tune his Aussie slang with us. It's funny how the phrase 'No Worries' can sound so different with a dutch ... read more

This is our third day in Pai and we're having a blast! Pai is very much like a Margaret River without the beach. It is much cooler here (guessing about 26-29 degrees), and there are loads of mozzies but that is all I have to complain about. Otherwise, it is cheap, small enough to walk in 20 minutes, artsy and... has good food! I decided to make the most of all this wonderful town has to offer and signed up for a yoga course. Lisa and I spent yesterday with our body in knots and as a result yes, today the muscles are a little tight. It was a great day and we are now pros at breathing- who knew we were doing it wrong! We are now certified yoga do-ers and have made a vow ... read more

The last few days have flown by and what I thought was a few days was actually closer to two weeks. Lisa and I spent way too long in Chang Mai waiting for my Chinese visa to come through from the consulate. While we waited we did manage to do some coool things like visit the zoo, (first time experiences of pandas, hippos, lion) walk the nigt bazaar, catch a movie and visit some other touristy sights. We chilled out and caught up on some sleep but the Thai food here has seriously let us down and it got to the stage where we depressed by the fare on offer. We had planned our CM trip to make sure we included the Sunday Walking Street market and this was Chang Mai's only redeeming quality. It was ... read more

Woke up in chiang mai, packed our bags and got picked up by our mini bus to be taken to pai. Jumping on the bus met our good american mate josh.... bus journey took approx 3hrs.... Scenery was amazin. After arriving in pai and booking ourselves into a secluded riverside hut for 50p/night, we explored the town on foot which took as little as 5mins. went to our 1st bar where we had a mohito and mai tai cocktail each, chillin on comfy pillows on the floor. That night we went to watch the disgraceful england match in a bar where we met our crazy irish friend dave and the rest of his gang. Next day we got ourselves a motorbike and set about exploring northwest thailand. For the next 3 days life consisted of drivin ... read more
