We'd heard that Pai was a bit of a hippy chilled out place, with not a lot to do other than enjoy the weather and listen to a bit of Bob Marley and it did not disappoint! After a particularly troubled journey for Emilie and a stressful journey for me, on what seemed like a never ending, winding road through the mountains we arrived in Pai. Hot, sweaty and still hungover (Emilie) from the night before and with no idea where we were going to stay we stopped in the first place we saw to eat. This turned out to be a Thai cooking school and therefore some great cheap food. After 20 minutes walking with our bags in the scorching midday sun we decided we would only stay somewhere with a pool, but with our ... read more

I spent a couple of nights in Bangkok once I got back from Myanmar. I didn’t really do a great deal just caught up with Rin and also caught up with all the great Thai food I have missed in the last month. I caught the 12 hour overnight bus to Chiang Mai which was a breeze after the ones in Myanmar and quickly found some good accommodation for $15 a night including breakfast. I ended up staying a couple of nights there and just took it easy. I didn’t think there was a great deal to see around town but it has a relaxed atmosphere and seems like a popular place to do courses in cooking, thai boxing, massage, etc. On Saturday night I went to see some Thai boxing which had an interesting mix ... read more

Hi again, Okay, so first off that title was just waiting to be written and I wish I could've seen my mother's reaction ;). However, before I continue, I'd like to reassure any relatives that, no, I didn't get high and have a tattoo done, nor did I get arrested. I simply watched as the idiots I was with did :D. So, with that in mind, my next blog update.... To get to Pai, I ended up taking the minivan, and luckily I got a seat in the front as the road there turned out to wind up and down through the mountains. Apparently there's something like 300+ bends in the road, most of which seem to be hairpin turns. As if this didn't make the trip bad enough, the driver was a classic Thai, by ... read more

So after several bouts of food poisoning, missing India, turning my nose up at tourist traps and calling Michael to tell him that I am homesick and want to come home, I am finally liking Thailand! It's been a bumpy ride but I feel like I have settled in now, especially now that I am in Northern Thailand where there are mountains, temples and culture! I originally arrived in Phuket from Singapore and did what everyone does... made a beeline for Phi Phi Island. So Phi Phi itself was amazing, the sea was turquoise, the sand was white, the fish swam around your ankles the scenery was magnificient but unfortunately, you have to share it with a million other tourists. After spending 2.5 months in India, such a spiritual, cultural and sexually repressed placed, Phi Phi ... read more

From Phi Phi, we flew Air Asia up to Chiang Mai. (Air Asia is an amazing low cost airline. Why the US airlines havent picked up on their success and recreated it is beyond me.) We then rode the 1st section of the Mae Hong Son loop to Pai, on the famed 762 curves, in the back of a tourist van. After spending a few days in Pai, we met up with friends we met at our hostel in Chengdu. Along with 3 other new travel buddies, we all headed out to Mae Hong Son on a few bikes and a pick up truck. After exploring life on the Burmese border, we vanned it back to Pai for a few final days before heading back down to Chiang Mai. The return van trip from Pai to ... read more

Introduction: As with many travelers embarking on a tour of South East Asia my disembarkation point was Bangkok. A hedy mix of strong cultural identity, scam artists and sleaze. If you keep your wits about you then you will have one of the most long lasting experiences on your travels, if not you will find yourself falling foul of a few annoyances. Date Visited: 27th - 2nd February 2010 2nd - 6th March 2010 14th - 17th July 2010 Accomodation: Most of the new travelers that arrive in Bangkok book accommodation in advance to ensure they have a room upon arrival to this far away new land. This in completely not necessary for all the times i have gone to Bangkok. When people do arrive at all times of the day or night, tired and jet ... read more

Today we will catch our minibus to Chiang Mai and then our train to Phitsanulok if all goes as planned... Yesterday we had to wait around a bit to get our motorbike, but once we did, it was wonderful! Ok actually, it wasn't at first...they seem so easy to control, but turning was hard! I had to practice a bit around this one hut because right turns were really hard. I finally kinda got the hang of it and we headed off to the Tha Pai Hotsprings -- our plan was to ask at some of the resorts if we could pitch our tent there and have access to their pools and such. When we went, we found there really wasn't an area for camping and the main resorts just kept pointing us on down the ... read more

Pai was a great little hippie town to go visit for about three days, I would say. Renting a motorbike was our best decision because the actual downtown of Pai consists of about 3 streets, so it was crucial that we have that bike to take us to the other sites that were a bit further away and not have to worry about a) missing the site or b) figuring out how to get a ride there. I discovered that the pants I'd bought in Chiang Mai for 200 baht (I bargained her down from 300) had a starting price of 100 in Pai. Annoying. There's really not much to do there, so if you're looking to just unwind, relax with nature, maybe go on a nice hike, hang out at waterfalls, or hang out at ... read more

This morning we left our big backpacks at our guest house in Chiang Mai and went to the bus station to buy a ticket to Pai and then went to the train station to buy a ticket to Phitsanoluk ("Pizza-no-luk"), because that's a midway point to head on to Non Khai, a border town of Laos. We were going to do the slow boat thing on the Mekong, but decided that journey would be way too painful to do since all we are going for is the tubing in Vang Vieng and to see the capital, both of which are pretty much right across the border from Non Khai. So we went to the bus station and we were led to our van which is literally just a small van with 9 seats stuffed in the ... read more

762 curves in the road to Pai from Chiang Mai. Or so they say the three hour journey north felt like 3,762 curves and even the best travellers would be feeling worse for wear. We certainly were after spending the previous evening sampling the nightlife of Chiang Mai. After we dragged ourselves from bed we ran to the bus station to meet Jo and Nicole and grab a rather early Pad Thai for breakfast. We arrived in Pai for lunchtime and set out on an adventure to find accommodation. It was suprisingly difficult to find somewhere that would fit all of us in one room but we suceeded in the end, dumped our stuff and headed out to explore. Pai is a quaint little town with a boho chilled out vibe. We were treated to a ... read more
