Louise's Section So Wednesday we moved onto Pai to chill out. I asked Chris what we had been doing in Chiang Mai as except for the odd Wat or two and the tigers we chilled out there. So what's the difference here from chilling there? Answer: we have a pool and lots and lots of bars and live bands and hippy stalls. Today we have been on a cooking course which was ace. I have a new found love of Thai curries, whatever the colour and had great fun making them. Seems like we left the receipes behind in the pub though, doh!! Apart from relaxing we haven't done much at all, but despite feeling guilty about this I am assured by Chris this is what travelling is about. Most people here go trekking which neither ... read more

In the morning we decided to head off to the town of Pai for 2 nights instead of going up to Chiang Rai which as we were told is similar to Chiang Mai so if we wanted to experience something different go to Pai. Pai (pronounced like BYE) is a small hippy town about 3 hours from Chiang Mai. We hopped in a mini van that drove us over and in through the mountain area to get to Pai. The roads were sooo windy that I could feel myself getting motion sick...again. But it didn’t amount to anything and we soon arrived in Pai. We were dropped off at the bus station where we decided to walk to a hotel nearby that we heard of to check it out. We ended up staying there and renting ... read more

May 3 Board a bus made in 1952 with leg room for 12-year-olds and cross a mountain range go to Pai, which has a reputation as a hippy, New Agey kind of place. There's nothing to see there especially, but if you want to shuffle around looking for a guru or an organic farm, it's a friendly, relaxed spot to do it. There are bamboo bungalows by the river, but our room is concrete with hot water and fans and good beds. Ellie wants to move to the mosquitofest that will be riverside living, but our room is so comfortable and pleasant we end up staying there. Anyway, by then we've already met a bunch of people, including Martin, the 'living Buddha' from Sweden, his Chilean paramour Claudia, and Zee, an Australian who wants to be ... read more

Still in Pai, but had told Ellie of plan to do meditation retreat at a Buddhist temple in Chiang Mai and she wanted to come. Then she didn't, she wanted to go to the organic farm, then she did, then Claudia did and Martin said, no he'd meditated enough under a tree, but seeing as Claudia wanted to ... Him and Claudia were having a scratchy period. Bascially she wouldn't talk to him. Then he told her to get out of the room they were sharing and then she explained why she was annoyed with him and all was jolly again. Spent May 5 at a dam during the day where Zee sings for us and some Thai kids, then we have dinner later and let people know we'll be incommunicado for ten days or so. ... read more

Hello again - this time from the wonderful north of Thailand! Where we left of last time, we had just finished our openwater dive course and were planning our next destination within Thailand. Due to having spent longer in Southern Thailand than anticipated we realised that we needed to get up north to see what we wanted to see before our visa's run out on the 11th of May. Therefore we decided to skip Koh Phangan and the full moon party for now and maybe do this when we come back to Thailand through Bangkok after Vietnam. This will be in a few more weeks so hopefully the situation in Bangkok might be better too. So, decision made, we booked our tickets to take us all the way from Koh Tao to Chiang Mai, via continuous travelling ... read more

Checked out, got some grub and wasted time on internet. Got mini bus to Chiang Mai and then on a big double decker VIP bus to Bangkok. Talked to an English couple sat behind us for a bit. Managed to get some sleep though Rob was very fidgety and squished.... read more

Booked bus back to BK, leave Pai at 14:30 tomorrow and don't arrive in BK till about 06:30am. Hired a couple of bikes today and set off out of the town centre. Unfortunately our butts very much ached after the elephant ride yesterday and poor Robby seemed less than enthralled by the excursion (apparently cycling up hills in the sweltering heat with no drink is not his idea of fun?!?). After cycling for about an hour we decided to take the bikes back and look round the shops. Robby bought a t-shirt he'd been looking at for the last 3 days and I bought some less comfy :( but very cheap :) replacement flip flops. Whiled away a couple of hours this afternoon reading mags on the hammocks at our guesthouse that overlook the river, very ... read more

After lunch we booked ourselves on a 1 1/2hr elephant trek. We were both a little apprehensive esp when the guide only looked 17! First thing I though when I caught sight of the elephants was 'oh crap, they're big'. Once on them you feel so far off the ground, very unnerving. We trundled along the road and through the forest (both of us were on the back of the same elephant and the guide was kinda on it's head) down to the river Pai where the guy took great delight in getting the elephant to blow water at us and chuck us off into the skanky river :p Being chucked off was a laugh though I wasn't so keen on the 6 ton of water that got up my nose. On the way back I ... read more

Bus picked us up at about 09:30, was a 10 seater mini van with air con and there was only 6 of us. The trip to Pai was only about 3hrs, the road there goes through the mountains so it's very twisty and turny and one girl had to ask the driver to stop the bus at one point as she was feeling sick! We hadn't managed to book any accommodation on-line but headed straight to the place I'd liked the look of and luckily we managed to get a beautiful bungalow with private bathroom and hot water, it's really stunning. After dumping our stuff we went for a wander down by the river (beautiful views) and into the main part of town. Though it's not a big place it has everything you need/want (bars, restaurants, ... read more
