As I have previously commented, when we set out on our journey to Korea, we really did not know what to expect or if we could find things to do to pass the time outside of school hours. As it turned out, Korea again did not fail to disappoint. It is actually an activity filled country with something for everyone. Given that we only have 12 months here, we are trying to visit new places as often as possible, really trying to ‘see’ Korea while we have the chance and we have already found some places of interest not too far from our doorstep… Traditional Korean Folk Village, Suwon One of the first things we decided to do was to visit a traditional Korean folk village. At the time we had yet to work out the ... read more

Monday, 26th April 2010 "The blooming sakuras at Jiayu Park was definitely worth the 75 minutes train efforts from my guesthouse to Incheon!" Located at the tail of Metro Line #1, the port city of Incheon was home to the largest Chinatown in South Korea. While I had much luck with the sakuras, it was a real pity that the rainy conditions prevented me from exploring the rest of the city in detail. The helpful gentleman at the Tourist Office had earlier penned down a walking route where I could used it for the day. I could probably save this piece of useful information for my future trips. Even after waiting in the restaurant for 2 hours, there was simply no chance that the rains would stop. I decided to make a quick dash to the ... read more

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder…and we can find beauty in the most unexpected places. Before leaving England, when we informed friends and family of our decision to call a city in South Korea home for the next year, the common response we received was ‘Why South Korea?’ I myself must admit that before arriving in South Korea, I had not dived into any kind of meaningful research on the country, its people or its customs. In fact after stepping off the plane, we were neither fluent or competent in saying the words ‘Hello’ or ‘Thank you’ (something we overcame by actually writing the words on our hands for the first day, all the while looking ridiculous thanking local people with our hands in front of our face reading sweaty writing!). Indeed, after a ... read more

Wanderlust I believe is the word ‘they’ call it. A certain itchiness of the feet, a lust for that which has not yet been experienced and the subsequent adventure it can bring. What is not apparent, at least not to me is whether or not one is born with a desire to travel or whether this is acquired through…well whatever means it may be acquired! So, with that said, I will put the philosophical trek on hold and tell you what I do know…that Miss Amy Foster certainly has wanderlust and somewhere between the moments we first met and today, a significant amount of said wanderlust has unexpectedly rubbed off on me. And so, with this collective inclination for adventure and escapade we decided to pack up what remained of our belongings in England, say our ... read more

Panorama - This is a picture of the Buddhist Monastery on the hill behind Songdo Day 1 You really don't know what you're going to get when you buy an airfare with a stopover in Korea. It took some questions to learn that Korean Airlines will be putting us somewhere with meals included. Now, in my experience to date, it could mean a bowl of noodles at a corner restaurant where the bus driver gets a commission. But I have to say that Korean Airlines are on the marketing campaign to have more people stay in Korea instead of flying out next day. We were put in the Ramada Songdo, a small tourist village on the outskirts of Incheon. Our dinner was a grand display of international foods in a buffet. Delicious! Our rooms are extravagant ... read more

I started my day at 7am, was at the airport by 9:30am and flight was on time. Sat next to a pretty interesting person a kid from Milwaukee who is an actor in Korea, has been in quite a few movies. So the flight was pretty good, I ate Korean food and slept a good few hours, although the flight was LONG, 14 hours. So now I am in transit in Seoul, had a pretty good korean beef noodle soup and found a free computer. I have about 2 hours left to kill... Can't wait to have a shower and finish 25 hours of transit... I must say though you really do feel like you accomplished something traveling for this long.. The payoff is just around the corner. I do really want to spend some time ... read more

One of the reasons that I really wanted to visit Seoul and South Korea was because of a new part of the city that was being built. I enjoy watching shows on Discovery channel and amongst one of my favorites is one called "Build it Bigger". I remember an episode where the South Korean government decided that they would reclaim a piece of land the size of Downtown Boston from the bay. On the land they would build a brand new city that would incorporate sustainable design principles, or more commonly known as Green building. For those of you who do not know I am a LEED Accredited Professional under the US Green Build Council. From the airport in Incheon a huge 7 mile long bridge was built to reach the new part of the city. ... read more

A little info for anyone who may be interested in teaching ESL in Korea. If you want more details about teaching a class, you can also refer to my other entries: , Recruiter or No? Public School or Hagwon? I went through a recruiter named Canadian Connection because they had received positive reviews and my initial contact with them over the phone was very pleasant. Follow your gut if you decide to go through a recruiter; if the person sounds like a salesman or a jackass, well, you probably don't want to place your trust in them down the line. There are TONS of jobs available in Korea, so go through someone who inspires trust or take the matter into your own hands. Also, buy your plane tickets yourself! I saved $400 by buying my own ... read more
