Most of today was taken up with my unGodly all day flight (from 7am - 9pm, with a swapover in Hong Kong). The second plane ride which was spent sitting behind a man who just couldn't live without crushing my knees. I always get the seat behind the one person who will push his seat back. Then, he started stretching his hands all the way over his head rest and leaving his hands right in front of my little seat TV. I watched Memoirs Of A Geisha with some creepy man's hand in the way. It's the only way to watch it. When I landed there was a lot of confusion. Confusion was to be the basis for my time in Korea. The airport is on an island, on a piece of reclaimed land, far away ... read more

Hi guys! I've decided that instead of sending everyone group emails while I'm away, I'd subscribe to this Travelblog site. This way, you guys will all get an update whenever I update the site, but it's up to you as to whether or not you want to check it out, and hear about my latest adventures. So with that said, just a quick update for everyone. After a 30-something hour day (over 14 of which were spent in the air) Mark and I have arrived in Incheon, South Korea. We have a 24 hour layover here before our last leg of the journey into Bangkok, Thailand. So far, everything has been great. With the help of one too many travel pills I slept for more than 9 of the hours in flight, and the hotel that ... read more

This is Cynthia! We landed in Incheon, South Korea mad early this morning, around 7am. okay well technically that's not so early, but if you're still on Vietnamese time, it's around 5am in the morning for me. We have a 10 hour layover so instead of just lounging in this humongous airport, Jason and I decided to take the express limousine bus to Seoul, Korea. This was one of the nices buses we have ever been in, lounge type seats, foot rest, and heater at your side. Oh yeh, u must be wondering why I thought having a heater was a good thing. It's FREEZING in South Korea!! I thought the South is always supposed to be hot and sunny?? What happened. Jason and I have been walking around in tank tops and linen pants all ... read more

It’s a sad and lonely Sunday evening in Seoul and I’m sitting in my empty apartment with Kristy’s laptop. Kristy is on a bus on her way to Guitar (?) to see her friend Christine. I pretended to know where that is but….. I don’t mean to seek sympathy with this intro…as much as I thought it would be novel to mimic Kristy’s last entry. I too, feel cozy, perched up on my third floor apartment, overlooking the street of loud high heeled shoes and old men spitting, while sipping my water. MMmmmm This should make for a strange two weeks, the first time we’ll have been apart. I must say…..it’s a lonely feeling. Made me pretty thankful that this trip was not done solo. I feel more respect for those who venture out to take ... read more

I am here at the Incheon airport in Seoul waiting for my Korean air flight to New York. There is a nice Yahoo internet cafe here that I am using to check my email. Last night I went out to dinner with Will and one of her girlfriends at a nice Chinese restaurant. Her girlfriend is working on her master's degree in linguistics. We had a nice time. After leaving them, I called Wan and asked her to meet me for a final goodbye drink. We ended at a place called Radio City where they had live entertainment and a disco upstairs. Stayed there until about 2:30 am. Wan stayed there and she gave me a call when she left. I was hoping she would come over personally, but she never made it. Went back to ... read more

Happy Sunday morning to everyone from Korea. Although it looks like an unhappy Sunday afternoon in East Lansing as the Spartans are behind in both their "currently in progess" football game and basketball game. Hopefully we can pull out a win We're back in Seoul Incheon Airport for a 2 1/2 hour layover. Both the flight from Samui to Bangkok and Bangkok to Seoul went very quickly. We still have the longest flight ahead of us which will board in two hours. Bangkok Airport was hellish bureaucracy -at least four different checkpoints we had to wait through. However, I apparently didn't get busted with the wooden Buddha I brought out of the country without a permit (not quite sure how strictly they enforce that law since my Buddha is not an antiquity). However, I put it ... read more

Hello All The Hyatt ..... well not quite what we expected but we are willing to keep an open mind ;) With accomodation included in our flight to Vancouver via Seoul, we had imagined a cheapo hotel to suit our recent unemployment but instead we were put up in a king size bed, dinner, breaky & lunch included in the Incheon Hyatt!!!! Very nice!!! Of course we didn't realise that our bags would be checked through to vancouver so whilst we were enjoying this luxury we had no change of clothes, bathroom stuff etc. (our BO overpowering the smell of beautiful food in the fancy hotel restaurant) pew!!! thank god for duty free stores with perfumes to try!! Anyway we are on our way to Canada Bye for now Mel & Mark ... read more

I arrived in Seoul, South Korea after a very very long flight. I had to change planes twice and had a two hour layover both in Chicago and Tokyo. I had randomly started talking to a girl who was boarding the plane to go to Tokyo at the same time as me. I asked her if her name was Olivia because I knew that a couple was going to be on that plane with me who was going to be teaching at the same school as I. Indeed, I guessed correctly because there was only a few foreigners boarding the plane. I also saw her Canadian passport at the check in. I had them to talk to on the long layover in Tokyo. Olivia and I had a lot to talk about on the plane. ... read more

After two years on and off of life in South Korea, interspersed with wanderings, I'm off again to do something i hope to be meaningful. During my time in the south of South Korea, i've been graced with good friends and abundant mountains to climb. For all considering Korea, i praise the mountains, the food, friends once you make them, and many incongruities. Beware of east versus west thinking conflicts, and materialism, and a rather high standard of living (though slight compared with Japan). Smog aside, Korea is where i have felt strongest and healthiest. The most beautiful place, for moi, is Geoje island, an island to the south of Busan. The most beautiful foods are any with "gochu" (hot pepper), "dooboo" (tofu), and many, many "banchan" (side-dishes, including Kimchi, the national sauerkraut). Today, June 14th, ... read more
