Hello fellow readers, You may be wondering what the title of this blog means, and I don't really know, but I am digging into something that might be deeper than you are prepared for. I haven't been here in South Korea for that long but I am gathering, as a foreigner teaching english you have two options: 1) Find other foreigners to get drunk with and socialize within a small clique of other english speaking people...or 2) Indulge in the unknown with a new culture and perhaps discover something within yourself. I lean toward option (2) with a hint of option (1). It is nice to get out, speak english and have a few beers with similar people, but you don't have to go to South Korea for that, I could have stayed in Lindsay. That ... read more

Well, it's been almost a week since I have been here and things are starting to fall into place, at least from a standpoint of status. I am starting to get used to the culture, but I still have no idea what I am buying or what stores I am entering as I have no clue what the writing means???? However, I am studying the language one hour a day, time permitting, so that my experience here will be much more fulfilling. School is fun, however, I was just thrown in front of a class of kids and was expected to start teaching with no preparation or anything. So you learn fast. I am the first foreigner at this school and thus they have no idea to what is the norm. I have yet to take ... read more

Well, I have finally made it to Korea, and my mind has been officially blown. It's been an eye opening experience for me as soon as I stepped of the plane. Not only am I the only person I have talked to that speaks english, but apparently I am the first westerner some of these people have ever seen. The place is quite busy and it all looks the same. After I got off the plane there was nobody in sight to pick me up, so there I was with a thumb and a bum...so what do you think comes next.....lol Anyway, after a little while the guy picks me up in what looked like a toyota camry and he has his wife with him. So do the math, a years worth of luggage, johnny Yoon ... read more

We are on our way. Today we began our day just like any other day. We began by sewing our patches on to our packs. One for Canada and one for South Korea. Our plan is to collect patches from each of our destinations. Giles has become an expert craftsman at the art of sewing. The packs are stiff and shiny because they have not been used for any other function than sitting in our closet. Last night we celebrated our departure from Korea in a big way. We started by having dinner and drinks at a local pub in Seoul. We ended over tears and a few Polly's Kettles. For those of who have not had the luxury, they are Soju and Kool-aid cocktails served in halved two litre bottles. Yum, yum... We just got ... read more

Tis me, I'm actually GONE!!!! So if you missed saying goodbye then you suck. If not, then watch your mailboxes!!! Had a lovely night at the Hyatt where I indluged in some 5 star dining with new friends and some CNN and BBC and cocktails in the hotel bar while being serenaded by Korean karaoke. If you haven't done it, try it. They take it so seriously I enjoy listening to them. Onto London now thence to Dublin so might clock on at Heathrow if I don't get lost. A tad apprehensive about the social side of travelling alone but if so far has any indication then I shouldn't worry. Hope it's sunny in Oz, it was snowing before at Incheon which was wicked as i've never seen snow before in real life, had a bit ... read more

I've just eaten my last bowl of bib im bap, poked at the last dish of kimchi, and now i'm spending the last of won in this internet lounge as the sun sets behind me on this, my last day in South Korea. This morning my bed was taken from me, john and mr kim arrived to clear out my aparta. much to their dismay i had made almost no effort cleaning, i just collected piles of stuff i thought others would find useful, mr kim threw it all away. i had paid 50,000 won for a cleaner so i thought this entitled me to one last egg sandwich as i watched my boss sweep my floor and tried to contemplate the journey ahead of me. this however i find very difficult, all i know and ... read more

Nach ... read more

So not long ago we were lucky enough to have a 5 day weekend due to the holiday Chuseok. Chuseok is a very big travel holiday here as many people return to their home town, dress up in traditional Korean dress, visit the graves of the ancestors and have meals with their family. Many Koreans call it their thanksgiving but to me its seems more like Christmas as it is very family oriented and at the same time it is a very big time to give gifts. Most stores we went to had big plastic wrapped gift packages of SPAM maybe 5 cans in it for like 40 bucks....i dont get it but hey then again I'm the new guy. Also on these holidays cities become ghost towns and it was quite spooky walking down ... read more
