It's been some time since my last entry. I suppose things are starting to become familiar and thus I rarely see the need to take my camera with me. That, and my camera is big so it is sometimes a pain in the ass to carry everywhere I go. However, you may find the title interesting and you can see the accompanying picture was taken on the subway of all places. If I was going to take a bomb on the subway a sign surely wouldn't prevent it. Also, who is making the bowling ball with candle in it type bombs anyway, perhaps this particular bomb isn't allowed on the subway, who knows?? Anyway, with this entry I wanted to provide those of you who haven't experienced Korea two things: 1) to show you the sights ... read more

HELLO from South Korea! My flight was fine, after an emotional send off from Claire, i had lots of movies to watch and a spare seat next to me! Met up with John-Lee the guy who organised my job and headed straight for Wonderland school to meet the teachers and sit on on my first class! Megan the teacher im taking over from is great, really helpful and its good to watch her handle the different classes. The school is in a high rise building.. well 4 stories, but well orgenised and each classroom is decorated differently. I will be teaching Korean 5 yr olds which are actually English 4 yr olds (different way of counting age, come out at 1 yr!) and all ages up to 11! You would really be surprised at how much ... read more

Well, I just survived my first 5 day vacation in Incheon. There was drinking and there was exploring. More drinking than exploring. But really eating a meal here daily is an exploration is itself. I still have to scour the city looking for edible food. Breakfast/lunch is usually taken care of...there are very yummy bakeries here although all their goodies are meat-filled. I've pretty much succumbed to eating seafood in order to survive and not be difficult. Anybody in my company is just as tortured as I am trying to find a place to eat, so eventually I feel bad, break down and agree to eat seafood. I went to an island, Ganghwa-do I think is the name...we drove there via my new friend Peter, who is married and lives here. We drove to the beach, ... read more

"I sought to see the amazing as normal, and the daily as unique, and in that swirling paradox I found the joy of travel." -Mary Poxon --------------------------- “Margaret-teacher, please help explain American Holiday called Easter.” I was currently shadowing Ashley-teacher, a pleasant Korean woman who works at my school, an English emersion school in Incheon City, South Korea. I was supposed to follow around each teacher for one class and observe their different styles of teaching. But I had just gotten off the plane about 12 hours earlier, and needless to say, I was a bit overwhelmed. “Well, Easter is a holiday that celebrates the day that Jesus rose from the dead after he was killed on the cross by the Jews 2,000 years ago.” Their stares were mostly blank, but some were horrified. I decided ... read more

The longer I spend in Korea, the more I am able to appreciate and respect the Korean attitudes and customs. Some of these are quite fascinating and can broaden the mind of a sheltered Westerner like myself. As I see it, most of my experiences here are going to be very unlike home so the best way to enjoy myself is to embrace these differences and make the most of my ‘cultural expedition’. Confucianism in Korea is rife. Society as a whole is very reluctant to compromise on this mindset and any suggestion of drastic change tends to be wholly shunned, particularly amongst the older population. One trait that has been very evident to me in my short time here is respect for elders. Obedience towards your seniors is imperative and often there are alternative phrases ... read more

So. Firstly let me just say how pissed off I am right about now. After sitting on a plane for ten freaking hours, I get off and turn on my phone to see if I have any message love. And lo and behold, and some point during the flight. my screen has cracked, and I can't see shit. I know I have two messages on there, but I can't for the life of me read them. So I am officially phonless (and alarm clock less) for four weeks now. So I'm sorry if I'm not replying to any texts, don't think I'm being rude. The rest of the flight wasn't too bad. I found it funny that out of the 100 odd South Korean ladies on my flight, not one of them wanted to join the ... read more

Okay, so I was worried that I wasn't going to have anyway to contact anyone once I moved into my apartment but I got a cell phone from the school right away and I appear to be stealing wireless just fine. Yesterday, we went on a tour of Incheon, although I'm not sure what I saw exactly of Incheon. BUT I did make a clay pot with one of those spinning pottery things. Then we saw some children beat the crap out of each other (a Korean martial art that's not taekwondo). Then we had this fancy lunch, where I ate nothing BUT I did manage to break the toilet in the men's bathroom. I went in there because there was a long lineup in the women's and I started pressing all these buttons on the ... read more

I left Hawaii Saturday night and got into Incheon, Korea on Monday in the afternoon. The flight was long an grueling because I had to stay overnight in the Honolulu airport. Elevator Hawaiian music and security guards, not a soul in sight. I finally checked in with China Airline at 5:30am. They weighed my carry on and determined it was too heavy so I HAD to check it. $32 later, I was on my way to Taipei. 10 hours with the least amount of leg room I've ever had on a plane...and I was miserable because I had just left Hawaii....I'm airsick and I haven't eaten in 24 hours...it just gets worse and worse. My flight into Incheon was only a couple of hours but let me tell you, it was the longest 2 hours. My ... read more

It is more than a week since my arrival and already I am set in to a nice routine. My first week of teaching has been very enjoyable, if a little tiring. The first day was easy enough; I was just sitting in class all day, tipping back on my chair too much and not really listening to what was going on. It brought back some memories! It wasn’t until I arrived last Friday that I discovered I will actually be teaching at two different schools. The director of my school runs three within about 20 minutes of each other. On Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays I will be teaching at the main campus. This is purely a language school (or Hakwon) and has two other British teachers doing the same thing as me. On Tuesdays and ... read more

Sleep Shmeep! As the weekend draws to a close I can happily inform you that all is well and I'm having a great time. I'm meeting people all the time and haven't really stopped since I got here. As an added bonus, my digestive system is so far standing up to the task provided by the food and water! The routine here is quite strange but really good. 'Daytime' goes from about 13:00 through to 06:00 the next day. My teaching hours are 2pm to 9pm so have no choice but to have a lie in everyday and be more or less nocturnal. I have spent the weekend looking around Incheon which will be my home for the next year. People like to go out drinking and party big time here so I've had a double ... read more
